1. أَبُدورُ تمٍّ كالبدورِ طوالعُ

    يَبدو لَنا منهنَّ نورٌ ساطعُ

    Stars appear like full moons their lights emerging

    We see a radiant glow constantly emerging

  2. أَبصرتهنَّ فخلتُ أَقماراً بَدَت

    مِن حيثُ شفّت بِالوجوهِ براقعُ

    I saw them and found them to be like bright moons

    Behind their veils their brilliant faces surfacing

  3. يا حبّهنّ وحبّذا لَكَ موقفاً

    ظلنا نشيّعهم بهِ ونوادعُ

    Oh how I love them! And how apt the position was

    When we bid farewell, not ceasing to see them off

  4. إِذ نحنُ في التوديعِ لَم يرقأ لنا

    أَبداً منَ الدمعِ الهتونِ مدامعُ

    As we bid adieu, no tears fell from our eyes

    Grief stricken, from this pain my tears not welling

  5. نَشكو جَوى الفُرقا ودود لحاظنا

    منهنَّ في روضِ المحاسن راتعُ

    We complain of the agony of parting, and the affection

    Of their glance in the garden of beauty flourishing

  6. وَعُيوننا منّا لهنّ نواظرٌ

    وَقُلوبُنا منّا لهنّ نوازعُ

    Our eyes gaze longingly upon them

    Our hearts incline fondly towards them

  7. وَتَرى اِختِلاساتِ الوداعِ مغانماً

    يومَ الوداعِ لنا وهو مصارعُ

    And you’d see the sorrows of departure as spoils

    The day we bid adieu and they were perishing

  8. يا أيُّها السِربُ الّذي آرامهُ

    أَبداً نُواصلُ في الهوى ونقاطعُ

    O flock whose affection will never wane

    In passion we shall always meet and departure

  9. مَن يَشتري روحي بقبلةِ مبسمٍ

    منها فإنّي أَشتري وأُبايعُ

    Who will buy my soul for a kiss from those smiles?

    For I will buy and trade

  10. زارَت أميم بعدَ طول فراقِها

    وَالركبُ من بينِ الرواحلِ هاجعُ

    My beloved visited after long separation

    The caravan had settled, resting

  11. جاءَت إِليَّ بِوَصلها أحلامها

    سحراً وَلَم يشفَع إِلينا شافعُ

    She came to me in a dream with her affection

    Like a spell, no intercessor intervening

  12. تَفترُّ عن درٍّ يقبّل سمطه

    عودُ البشامةِ فهو أبيض ناصعُ

    Revealing a pearl that kisses her cheek

    The purity of her complexion flourishing

  13. وَتَرى العتابَ يحيلُ حمرةَ خدّها

    وقتَ التخجّلِ فهوَ أصفر فاقعُ

    You’d see the redness of her cheek from shyness

    Transform during her embarrassment paling

  14. أَقوَت مَرابِعُها فَما ضحت الحشا

    منّي لَها بعد الربوع مرابعُ

    I strengthened her shelters, not clearing the courtyard

    For her after the seasons flourishing

  15. وَلَقد وَقفتُ بدارِها من بعد ما

    خفَّ الأحبّة والرسوم بلاقعُ

    And I stood at her house after

    Friends and traditions started fading

  16. كَيفَ العَزاءُ وكيفَ سلواني وقد

    صدعَ الفؤادَ من الكآبة صادعُ

    What solace when my heart is shattered

    From melancholy and grief splitting

  17. لا تنتثق بِمواهبِ الدنيا وقد

    تَقنُط إِذا عرضت إليك فجايعُ

    Don’t be misled by worldly gifts when

    Misfortunes can make you lose hope

  18. هنَّ الليالي مُعطيات للفتى

    مِن حَيث لا يرجو وهنَّ موانعُ

    Those nights give to the youth from where

    He doesn’t hope, either helping or preventing

  19. وَالمرءُ يحذرُ مِن حَوادثها وما

    حذرُ اِمرئٍ ممّا يُحاذر نافعُ

    One fears its calamities, but no precaution

    Of a person can prevent what is destined

  20. وَاِعلم بأنّ الدهرَ للإنسانِ لو

    طالَت لَهُ مدد السلامة خادعُ

    Know that if one lives long in this life

    It is a deceitful thing, tricks playing

  21. في كلِّ مرصادٍ تروع المرء من

    ريب الزمانِ زواجرٌ وروادعُ

    I tested fate and deliberated its matters

    I reluctantly accepted what it cooks up

  22. جرّبُت دَهري واِعتبرتُ أُمورهُ

    فَرضيتُ قَسراً بالّذي هو صانعُ

    My trials showed me that whenever

    It fears the decree, it doesn’t lag or delay

  23. وَأَرتني منه التجارب كلّما

    هو في القَضا خاف وما هو شائعُ

    I heard such scolding and warnings from fate

    That no ear has heard before, unprecedented

  24. وَسَمعت من زجرِ الزمانِ ونهيه

    ما كانَ لَم يسمعهُ قبلي سامعُ

    Until I almost know what has been ordained

    Before truth surfaces and takes effect

  25. حتّى أكادُ لِما قَضى أدري بما

    هوَ قبل أَن يبدو الحقيقة واقعُ

    While people feel assured by what

    Brings them joy, and what makes them worried

  26. وَالناسُ ذلكَ مطمئنٌّ بالّذي

    يحصي به فرحٌ وذلك جازعُ

    In this world, good things have consequences

    Just like bad things have consequences for the stricken

  27. لِلخيرِ في الدنيا توابعُ مثل ما

    للشرِّ فيها للمُصابِ توابعُ

    Why would I keep praising the angels

    When my praises don’t make them continue correspondence

  28. ما لي وَللأملاكِ ليس بواصلٍ

    بِمدائِحي من المواصل قاطعُ

    Many have asked for my poems’ daughters’ hands

    Constantly asking for them and reading

  29. كَم خاطب لبناتِ فِكري لم يزل

    أَبداً يُطالِبُني بها ويطالعُ

    And I see that my poems praising them

    Have not been adequate compensation for their high status

  30. وَأَرى الصنائعَ مِن مَديحي لم يكن

    عوضاً لهنّ منَ النوال صنائعُ

    While years make some poetry obsolete

    Catastrophes have not impacted these, preserving

  31. هاذيكَ تُبليها الدهورُ وهذه

    لَم تُبلها للحادثات قوارعُ

    And if artistic expression becomes obsolete in the world

    My praise for the generous will never lose value

  32. وَإِذا الصنائع في الورى كَسدت فلم

    يَكسُد لِمَدحي في الكرامِ بضائعُ

    Can the composition of a pretentious person

    Compare with one naturally gifted and roaming?

  33. هَل يَستوي نَظم اِمرئٍ متكلِّفٍ

    وَقريضُ مَن هو في البديهة كارعُ

    For some stars shine, some disappear

    And some poetry is polished, some rough

  34. فَمِن النجومِ زواهرٌ وغوامضٌ

    وَمِنَ القريضِ جواهرٌ وترايعُ

    I bowed down on my face to the King, to the Most High

    Prostrating myself in the deserts surrendering

  35. وَإِلى المليكِ إِلى المعالي أرقلت

    بي في القفارِ سواجدٌ ورواكعُ

    A King whose dignity cannot be tarnished

    By greed which defiles even Kings when desiring

  36. ملكٌ يجلّ بأن يدنَّس عرضهُ

    طمعٌ إِذا دنس الملوك مطامعُ

    He seeks surplus wealth and strives

    To attain it speedily endeavouring

  37. يَسعى إِلى كسبِ الفضولِ وإنّه

    ليحثّ في إِدراكها ويسارعُ

    He takes down the champions of fate defiantly

    As if he himself is the contender

  38. يَكفي صناديدَ الوقائعِ حاسراً

    مِن درعهِ وكأنّما هو دارعُ

    He is the hopes and ambitions, just as

    In ancestry there lies an antidote and lethal poison

  39. فهوَ الأماني وَالمَنايا مِثلَما

    في الصلِّ ترياقٌ وسمٌّ ناقعُ

    He and his brothers have brought glory to praise

    For the generous are deserving of praise

  40. أَضحى وإِخوته مجداً للثنا

    إنّ الأكارمَ للثناء مواضعُ

    The six of them, plus the seventh being security

    The eighth being glory, the ninth splendours

  41. هُم ستّةٌ لهم السلامة سابعٌ

    وَالمجدُ ثامن والمفاخر تاسعُ

    They are like stars amidst the banquets

    The brilliance of majesty radiating from them

  42. وَكأنّهم وسطَ الدسوتِ كواكبٌ

    زهرٌ تلألئه الجلال لوامعُ

    O flower of days and King for whom

    The paths of generous deeds have been paved

  43. يا زهرةَ الأيّام والملك الّذي

    شَرَعت لهُ في المكرُمات سرائعُ

    Through you, God established kingdoms

    Just as the fingers are affixed to the palms

  44. بكَ ثبّت اللّه الممالكَ مثلما

    قَد ثبّتت في الراحتين الأصابعُ
