1. عُج بالمطيّ فَهذا السفح والعلمُ

    وَهذه كلل الأحبابِ والخيمُ

    Journey with mounts up this slope, here is the banner

    And here are the tents of loved ones and tents

  2. وهذهِ دمن الحيّ النزول بها

    وَهذه في السوامِ الشاء والنعمُ

    And here is the abode of the living where they descend

    And here are sheep and cattle in the meadows

  3. هم الأحبّة لا أَحبابَ بعدهمُ

    نَرى وليسَ نرى في الحيّ بعدهمُ

    They are loved ones, no loved ones after them

    We see, though see not, any living after them in the abode

  4. حيٌّ همُ تركوا الأجساد خاليةً

    منّا وَأرواحُنا أصبحنَ عندهمُ

    A living folk, they left bodies empty of us

    While our spirits have come to be with them

  5. نَرى جَفاهم وفرقاهم لنا سقراً

    وقَد نَرى جنّة الفردوس وصلهمُ

    We see their departure and separation from us as hell

    And we may see the Garden of Paradise and their union

  6. رعياً لأيّامنا اللّاتي عهدت بها

    سعداً تواصلنا والشمل ملتئمُ

    Pasturing days we were accustomed to

    In happiness, joined, and gathered together

  7. إِذ نحنُ في غبطةِ الترفيه في جدلٍ

    وَالعيشُ صافٍ وثغرُ الدهر مبتسمُ

    When we were in the joy of contention in discourse

    And life was pure and the days smiled

  8. مِن حيثُ نَلهو وحبلُ الوصلِ متّصلٌ

    منّي وَمِنها وحبلُ الصرم منصرمُ

    From where we sported and the bond was connected

    From me and from her and the bond of sorrow ruptured

  9. واللّه ما خطرت في القلبِ ذكرتُها

    إلّا وَفي القلبِ نارُ الشوق تضطرمُ

    By God, I did not remember and recall her

    Except that in my heart the fire of passion blazed

  10. وَلا سنت مُقلتي يوماً ولا هَجعت

    إلّا أَتاني لَها من طيفها لممُ

    Neither has my tongue ever slumbered or slept

    Except there came to me from her specter a wraith

  11. وَلا عدلت إِلى سلوانِها أبداً

    إلّا ونادَمني في ذلك الندمُ

    Nor have I ever gone straight to her hut

    Except remorse then reproached me for that

  12. أستعذبُ السقمَ والتعذيبَ حيث أنا

    وَالصبُّ يحلو لهُ التعذيب والسقمُ

    I make sickness and torment sweet where I am

    And my love thrives on torment and sickness

  13. كأنّما وَجهُها مِن تحتِ بُرقعها

    بدرٌ منيرٌ بغيمِ المزنِ ملتثمُ

    As if her face beneath her head-covering

    A shining moon behind a cloudy veil

  14. تفترُّ عَن مبسمٍ عذبِ اللما رتلٍ

    كأنّه لؤلؤ في الثغر منتظمُ

    Beaming from a smile gently drawing

    As though a pearl set in her mouth

  15. كأنّما ريقُها شهدٌ يمازجهُ

    صوتٌ منَ المزنِ عذبٌ باردٌ شبمُ

    As if her saliva is honey mingled

    With a soft, delicious voice, refined, sipped

  16. عجبتُ للردف منها كيف يحملهُ

    خصرٌ نحيلٌ عليه الوشح منهضمُ

    I wondered at her buttocks, how they are borne

    By a slender waist wrapped tightly by her cloak

  17. لَم أَنسها يومَ قامت للوداعِ وقد

    زمّت لوشكِ الرحيل الأينق الرسمُ

    I'll never forget her when she stood to bid farewell

    Having saddled the camel mounts for travel

  18. وَقَد رأت أعين الواشين ناظرةً

    وَالركبُ في أهبة التِرحال مزدحمُ

    And the spies' eyes watched her

    As the caravan readied restlessly to set out

  19. فَاستَخجلت خشيةً مِن أن يبوح من ال

    أسرارِ ما هو في الأسرار منكتمُ

    So she was shy, fearing the spies would betray

    Secrets that in secrets she hid

  20. حتّى وقفتُ على حالٍ وقد وقفت

    خوف الوشاةِ وفيض الدمعِ منسجمُ

    Until I stood in a state, and she had stood

    Feared the spies, our tears pouring copiously

  21. أَشكو وتَشكو جوى الفرقا وأدمُعنا

    تُبدي وتفصحُ ما لا يفصح الكلمُ

    I complain, and she complains of parting, while our tears

    Reveal and express what words cannot tell

  22. فيا لَها وقفة كادَت تذوبُ لها

    أَكبادُنا مِن تباريح وتنقسمُ

    That pause of hers almost melted our livers

    With parting pangs and sundered them

  23. بانَت وَلا صافَحت كفّي ولا اِلتقيا

    عندَ الوداعِ لها منّا فم وفمُ

    She disappeared nor shook my hand nor kissed me

    At that farewell, mouth to mouth

  24. آها لتلكَ الليلاتِ الّتي سَلفت

    كأنّما ما عهدنا عندها حلمُ

    Woe for those bygone nights that passed

    As though we never dreamed by her a dream

  25. وَفجوة تسمع الركبان إِن دلجت

    للّحنِ فيها عريفاً ليس ينفهمُ

    And a gap the riders listen to, if the mounts strayed in it

    To the tune – none can understand that tune

  26. كلّفت قطعَ فلاها كلّ علجزة

    حرف سواء عليها البعاد والأممُ

    The severing of her bumps tasked all

    Words alike, whether far or near

  27. ما كانَ في قصدها المَسرى وقبلتها

    إلّا الهمامُ الّذي نافت به الهممُ

    Her destination and direction were none

    But the aspirations with which she brushed aside aspirations

  28. إِلى فلاح سليل المحسن الملك ال

    قرم الّذي في جداهُ يعدم العدمُ

    To the country squire, scion of the benefactor, the untainted King

    Whose ancestry the void itself lacks

  29. متوّج في المَعالي ما مآربهُ

    إلّا المفاخر والإجلال والكرمُ

    Crowned supreme, his desires are none

    But pride, majesty, bounty and grace

  30. وَتربُ نعليهِ للأملاك منتشقٌ

    وَبسطُ معناه للأملاك مُلتثمُ

    The dust of his slipper the wish of kings

    And the extent of his meaning their cloak

  31. لَم تجرِ أقلامهُ في طرسه أبداً

    إلّا تولّد منها البؤس والنعمُ

    His pens have never marched in his registers

    Except welfare and bounty originated therefrom

  32. في كلِّ يومٍ منَ الأيّام تمطرنا

    مِن جودهِ ديماً من بعدهم ديمُ

    Every day of the days he rains upon us

    Continually, after them perpetually, his largesse

  33. هوَ الجوادُ وما عاينت من سمنٍ

    سواه فهوَ إِذا اِستيقنته ورمُ

    He is the bountiful, and I have not espied any fattened

    Equal to him, so when you ascertain him guess!

  34. خوّاضُ بحرِ المَنايا في الخميس إذا

    تساقطت من كماة الحومة القممُ

    A extractor of the sea of calamities - when

    The summits crumble from the wine-pourers' decanters

  35. يُرجى ويُخشى وهذا كون مذهبهِ

    مثل السحابةِ فيها الماء والضرمُ

    To be hoped for yet feared, such is his way

    Like a raincloud wherein lies water and hail

  36. ليث غداة نزال ليس لبدته

    إلّا دلاص من الماذي ومحتكمُ

    A lion on the day of battle, his gadgets are none

    But the weapons of the contender and the judge

  37. وصارمٌ مِن سيوفِ اللّه ليس له

    مِن آلةِ الغمد إلّا الحلم والشيمُ

    And a blade among God's blades, having none

    Of the sheath's instruments but clemency and decency

  38. في درعهِ أسدٌ في تاجه قمرٌ

    في كفِّه زاخرٌ بالموج ملتطمُ

    On his coat of mail a lion, on his crown a moon

    In his palm a emulator clashing with the billow

  39. يا مَن بِه اِفتخَرت عز المحامد وال

    جرد المَذاكي معاً والسيف والقلمُ

    O you in whom the peak of praise and the bare

    Honorable glories combined, sword and pen alike!

  40. اِسمع مَقالي أبيتَ اللعنَ لا اِنكشفت

    لكم شموسٌ ولا زالت لكم قدمُ

    Hear my speech - may you be spared curses. Dawns have not shone for you

    Nor feet stumbled for you

  41. وَاِفخر بأجدادكَ الماضين إنّهمُ

    قومٌ سَموا في سماء المجد مجدهمُ

    And pride yourself in your forefathers, they

    Are a folk who ascended the sky of glory, their glory

  42. هم أسّسوا الملكَ في الدنيا بهمّتهم

    حتّى اِستَقام مدى الأيام ملكهمُ

    They established kingship in the world by their resolve

    Until their kingdom spanned the days rightfully

  43. بَنيتمُ سدّ يأجوج هناك وقد

    دخلتم حيث لا تُستكشف الظلمُ

    You built a rampart against Gog and Magog there

    And entered where gloom cannot be probed

  44. وَقَد أقمتم مناراً بعد ذاك وقد

    وافى إِلى بلد النسناس جيشكمُ

    And you raised up a minaret thereafter, and

    Your army reached the land of the Nasnas

  45. وَفي الرسيلِ مَدى الدنيا لكم صنمٌ

    يشيرُ بالكفِّ وحياً ذلك الصنمُ

    And in inscription across the world you have an idol

    Gesturing with its palm, that idol alive!

  46. وَاِسلم ودُم منعماً بالحمدِ منفرداً

    يا خيرَ مَن قَد حواه الحلّ والحرمُ

    And greet in prosperity lauded singularly

    O best of those the sanctuary and inviolable place contains!
