1. غاداك من ريم الحيا صحويها

    متساجلاً في قطرهِ وعشيّها

    You left the spring of life awake

    Strolling in its dew and dusk

  2. وسقاك منبجسَ العزالي واكفاً

    هطلاً وأولاك الملثّ وليّها

    And it quenched you from the seclusion’s downpour

    A pouring rain and garments soaked

  3. وَسحائب تَسقيكها من دمنة

    يُشجي القلوب دنيّها وقصيّها

    With clouds that quench you bitterly

    That stir the hearts, base and noble

  4. مَن لي بطاوية الحشا من بعدما

    سارت تجوب بها القفار مطيّها

    Who will I have, after the arid land

    That the steeds crossed, wandering in it

  5. خودٌ مُحيَّاها حكَى شمسَ الضُّحى

    وَحكى حنادس ليلها ليليّها

    A cheek the dawn’s sun told of

    And the night’s lamps told of its dark beauty

  6. ورديَّةُ الخدِّ المورّد يستبي

    بالحسنِ منه عقولَنا ورديّها

    The redness of the rosy cheek competes

    In beauty, enticing our minds with its roseiness

  7. صفر الوشاحِ حوى الجمان دقيقها

    وجليلها وضعيفها وقويّها

    The yellow wrap included the perfect bodies

    The tall and short, weak and strong

  8. كم نلت منها ما اِشتهت نفسي ولم

    لي طاب منها في الوصالِ شهيّها

    How much I got from it what my soul desired but

    The union did not taste sweet to me

  9. أيّام لم تمطر سحائب صبوتي

    إلّا اِنثنى بوليِّها وسميّها

    Days whose clouds did not rain my youth

    Except inclining to its guardian and protector

  10. وَشبيبتي عندَ الحسانِ شفيعتي

    ومشاربي لا يستحيل مريّها

    And my youth was my intercessor at beauty

    And my drinking pals do not change their bitterness

  11. فالآنَ قَد ذهبت وولَّت واِنقضت

    منها البشاشةُ واِضمحلَّ هنيّها

    But now it has gone, receded and vanished

    The cheerfulness and the bloom wilted

  12. ما لي وللأحداث ليسَ بمنثني

    عن قرعِ سنّي فحلُها وخصيُّها

    What is it to me and events not inclined

    To the ringing of my old age, its stallion and gelding

  13. تَمضي ويمضي عند ذاك غويُّها

    ورشيدُها وسعيدُها وشقيُّها

    It passes and there passes its intoxication

    And consciousness, happiness and misery

  14. وحوادثٌ ليس وصيُّها

    منها قدماً وليس نبيّها

    And events that have no guide

    Forward or back, no prophet

  15. وبعيدة الأرجاءِ لا شرقيّها

    تدري نهايته ولا غربيّها

    Distant places, no east

    That knows its end or west

  16. يهدي العريف بكلِّ فجٍّ مجهل

    منها إلى إنسيِّها وجنيها

    The knowledgeable guides through every rugged unknown

    Of it to its human or jinn

  17. أسري بها وأشيمُ برق مخايل

    يهمي بيشبوبِ النوال حنيّها

    I travel in it and estimate the flashes of visions

    That confer the gifts of companionship at times

  18. برقٌ تألَّق من عرار فاِغتنت

    منه العفاةُ فقيرها وغنيّها

    A flash that illuminated from a bare land so

    The destitute and wealthy gained from it

  19. ما في مبالغة العُلا عجميُّها

    يوماً يطاولُه ولا عربيُّها

    There is no exaggeration in lofty ambition one day

    That an non-Arab or Arab seeks

  20. وإذا النفوسُ إلى المطامعِ قادَها

    طبعٌ من الشهواتِ فهو أتيّها

    And when souls desire ambitions

    A nature of passions thus drives them

  21. وإليك محكمةً تبيتُ بحبِّه

    لفتىً يبيت الليل وهو يحبُّها

    And I make you an arbiter lodging in love

    For a lad who spends the night loving

  22. ينحو بها جهة الحجا نحويُّها

    وتفيد سامعَ لفظِها لغويُّها

    I walk its direction like pilgrims

    And its words benefit the linguistic

  23. لم يهدها غيلانه لبلاله

    أبداً ولم يَسبق بها أمويُّها

    His passion did not lead it to Bilaal

    Nor the Umayyad preceded it
