The green leaves sing melodies,
Singing and lamenting their passion upon the branches.
Did an event disturb them? Did the time bring it?
Or did the memory of thousands and the departure of friends agitate them?
So they tore open a heart that was healing
And renewed the pact of my passions and sorrows.
Who blames me or accuses me if I weep the ardour
Of the memory of a pact long since passed?
The moaning doves make me weep and remind me
Of the days of my youth after I forgot and was diverted.
Days of our pact - how beautiful that time was!
Nothing comes to mind except that it consoles me.
Days when their beauty interceded for me
Whenever I sought to join them at the first strikes of adolescence.
I walk among the white butterflies, my robe trailing,
My soul the soul of a fawn.
O you who blame me for my love of she with the mantle -
Have mercy on one suffering for love of her.
By God, by God I am not turning away from her
Even if my union with her turns to separation.
If the gazelle Najla looks my way,
Her eyelashes send arrows towards me.
A sun upon a branch above the hills -
Beneath it a slender leg bound by anklets.
Precious and proud Gheyda never cheapens herself,
Her smile offered only to the angry.
She shoots hearts and silences them
With the arrows of her languid, toothsome eyes.
And the night I visited her secretly I gained
From her kiss what even the demons had not gained.
In solitude with no fear of one who would deny us,
So we hide from him and pay him no mind.
She says in her flirtation “Talk to me and tell me
About Amr ibn Ujalan in India.”
And about the people of Udhayb and Wadi Al Khuzama
And about Na'am and Na'aman.
And what news of Layla in her dwelling
And Qays and all that passed between Mayya and Ghaylan.
And what Jamil faced from Buthayna in
The valley of Nughayth at the foot of Dhan.
So I told her about them and recited
The sweetest poetry in the words of Suhban.
And when she saw me skilled in such matters, a comrade
Whose heart roams with her in every field.
She said “And who is the proudest of kings?” I said “The kings
Of Qahtan - they are the kings of Y’arab.”
She said “And whom do you distinguish in particular?” I said
“I mean the glory of the Arabs, the blessed son of the Sultan.”
So she laughed and then said “You have brought what
Shows the truth with sincerity and clarity.”
“O you - have you seen one who equals him
Among all people, Arabs and non-Arabs?”
“A sea of generosity whose shores
Quench the thirst of every seeker of help.”
“It is as if generosity itself has grayed his nature
Since infancy, feeding him milk.”
“If its obtainer were a raincloud, it would drown
The people of earth, unleashing the flood.”
“You attack the person of glory but his tranquility
Returns with forbearance, if compared even to Thuhayl.”
“Neither Khalid in his great deeds rivals him
Nor rivals him Dhahal ibn Shayban.”
“He has risen in glory to where none have risen
- Not Dar ibn Darra or the Khagan bin Khagan.”
“And he has attained an eminent, lofty position
Below which are the stars of Bahram and Keyvan.”
“The highest heavens obey him and the days
Serve him - they are his best supporters.”
“He has a protector on mornings of calamity
Who takes the souls of heroes and horsemen.”
“O most noble of people in ease and adversity,
Most truthful in secret and disclosure.”
“You have grasped eternal glory and reverence, inheriting
From eternity and from Nasr ibn Zuhayr.”
“And enjoy the robe of glory from your God that
Was not worn by warriors riding asses and old men.”
“By the might of his Lord may his honor increase!
Above that of Kavus in highest rank and of Khusraw.”
“How many signs of yours have appeared among the people,
As if you were Moses son of Imran!”
“And how many of those who envied you has your Lord
Overturned, like the plots of Pharaoh and Haman!”
