1. أَتَرى سفيناً في البحارِ سوائراً

    يَقطعنَ مِن لججِ البحارِ زَواخِرا

    Do you see a ship sailing the seas,

    Crossing the tumultuous waves?

  2. أَم هنَّ في لججِ السرابِ هوادجٌ

    مُتضمّنات غزلة وجآذرا

    Or are they mirages in the heat haze of the desert,

    Bearing lovesick gazelles and does?

  3. ظَلنا نودّعهم وفيضُ دُموعنا

    تُبدي هناكَ منَ القلوبِ سَرائرا

    We kept saying farewell as our tears poured out,

    Revealing the inner secrets of our hearts.

  4. وَمريضةُ الألحاظِ ما نَظرت بها

    إلّا وَأَهدت لِلقلوبِ بَواترا

    Whenever that languid-eyed beauty gazed at me,

    She dealt deadly blows to my heart.

  5. يا حُسنَها يومَ الوداعِ وقَد جرى

    ذرُّ الدموعِ بخدِّها متناثرا

    Oh, her beauty on the day we parted,

    With tears streaming down her cheek!

  6. ما إِن تَباعَدنا جسوماً مرّةً

    إلّا اِلتَقينا أَنفساً وخواطرا

    No sooner had we physically parted

    Than we met in spirit and thoughts.

  7. شَمسٌ حَكَت شمسَ الضحى وجهاً وقد

    ضاقَت هناكَ خلاخلاً وأساورا

    A sun that rivaled the radiance of dawn,

    Her bracelets barely fitting, confining her wrists.

  8. حالَت وشاحاً في موشّحها وقد

    ضاقَت هناكَ خلاخلاً وأساورا

    She wore a scarf on her garment,

  9. عَجباً لِناظرها حساماً في الحشا

    ويَلوحُ للأبصارِ لحظاً فاترا

    Wondrous is she, a sword flashing in the night,

    Glimpsed by eyes for a fading moment.

  10. لَحظٌ منَ السحرِ الحرامِ مبرّؤٌ

    لكنّهُ في الحسنِ يُدعى ساحرا

    An enchanting glance of forbidden magic—

    And yet in her beauty she is called a sorceress.

  11. وَلربَّما طَرقت وسادي ليلةً

    مِن بعد ما غشي الهجوع السامرا

    And perhaps she crept into my bed one night

    After the revelers had dispersed.

  12. فَعففتُ عَنها شيمةً منّي لَها

    ولربّما فيما أحاول ناظرا

    I restrained myself, to preserve her honor,

    Although I struggled as I gazed at her.

  13. فَعَففتُ عنها شيمةً منّي لَها

    أحلل هناكَ غلائلاً ومآزرا

    I restrained myself, to preserve her honor,

    Although I yearned to unleash my passion.

  14. إنّي اِمرؤٌ لبسَ العفافَ وَلَم يَزل

    ثوبُ التعفّف والتُقى لي ساترا

    I am a man who wears the cloak of chastity

    Which has always been my protecting garb.

  15. يا مَعشراً في العيشِ أصبحَ باعهُ

    عمّا يريدُ منَ المطالبِ قاصرا

    O people adrift in life, whose wares

    Fall short of what they crave!

  16. حاوِل منَ الأرزاقِ ما تنفي به

    في العيشِ ضنكَ معيشةٍ ومفاقرا

    Seek what sustenance you need

    To relieve the bitterness of want.

  17. لا تقعدنّ على الضرورةِ والجفا

    ليقالَ حرُّ النفسِ أصبحَ صابرا

    Do not sit in helpless poverty

    Where they say the free have grown patient.

  18. خلّ الإقامةَ لِلمنازلِ واِرتَحل

    عوجاً تنسّب شدقماً أو ذاعرا

    Leave your homes and wander—

    Crooked roads make straight riders swerve.

  19. تَهوي بِراكبها فتحسبها إذا

    مرّت بِراكِبها عقاباً كاسرا

    Ships that swoop with their riders

    Are believed to plummet and crush.

  20. وَإِذا نظمت غرائبَ الأشعارِ لا

    تَقصِد بِها إِلّا المتوّج عامرا

    When you compose exotic verse,

    Seek only the prosperous overlord.

  21. وإِذاك أَنتَ أَتيتَ هالة دستهِ

    وَرأيته كالبدرِ فيها بادرا

    Then you will come haloed by his sanctuary

    And find him radiant like the full moon.

  22. في مجلسٍ يحوي هُماماً أكبراً

    في رُتبةِ العليا يسودُ أكابرا

    In a council filled with the greatest nobles,

    Lofty in rank, the elite of the elite.

  23. فَاِسجُد لغرّةِ وَجهه فهناك قد

    تَلقى أميراً بِالمكارمِ آمرا

    Bow down to his proud visage—

    There you will find a prince commanding generosity.

  24. وَاِنشد بمفخرة وقلّد مجدهُ

    في النظمِ مِن حليِ الثناءِ جواهرا

    Extol his glories in verse, bedecking his fame

    With the jewelries of praise.

  25. فَمن السعادةِ أَن يقالَ لشاعرٍ

    أَضحى فلان لابن شايق شاعرا

    What blessing, for a poet to say

    "So-and-so has become Ibn Shaddad’s poet"?

  26. صَمدٌ يبيتُ الليل ناظره على

    طلبِ المَعالي والمفاخرِ ساهرا

    A steadfast king who spends the night contemplating

    Sublimity, triumphs and glories while awake.

  27. وَرثَ ابن أحنفَ في الوقار وفي الندا

    كعباً وفي العلمِ المجمهرِ باقرا

    He inherited from Ibn Ahnaf

    Dignity, munificence and abundant knowledge.

  28. لَم تعدُ عادية له في معركٍ

    إلّا وكانَ لها المهيمن ناصرا

    He never entered a fray

    Without emerging its champion and defender.

  29. تَهنا عميرٌ أنّ بيت فخارها

    أَضحى له المفضالُ عامرُ عامرا

    Umair exults: his house of splendor

    Has become most prosperous of the prosperous.

  30. يا مَن علا رُتبَ العلا ومن اِكتسى

    برداً يفوقُ محامداً ومفاخرا

    O you who ascended the ranks of ascendance

    And donned a cloak that outshines eulogies!

  31. ما كانَ رأيك بالعقيمِ إصابة

    أَبداً وأمُّ نداكَ لم تكُ عاقرا

    What think you of barrenness ever striking

    The likes of you—no, your mother bore no fruitless child!

  32. عمّت فضائلكَ الخلائل كلّ من

    فوقَ البسيطةٍ بادياً أو حاضرا

    Your virtues have encompassed all,

    Both Bedouin and city dweller, present and absent,

  33. حتّى دَعاكَ الناسُ عدلاً مُقسطاً

    وَدَعاكَ بيت المال فضّاً جابرا

    Until people called you just and fair

    And the public treasury called you open-handed.
