1. كَم أَنتَ تَجحدُ وَالمدامعُ تشهدُ

    وتقرُّ أحياناً وحيناً تجحدُ

    How much you deny while tears bear witness

    And sometimes you admit and sometimes deny

  2. أَتظنُّ يُخفي الحبَّ مَن هو مدنفٌ

    كَلفٌ وذائبُ دمعهِ لا يجمدُ

    Do you think love is hidden by one infatuated

    Sickly, whose flowing tears do not freeze

  3. مِن أينَ يصلحُ فاسدٌ من مهجةٍ

    فيها علاقاتَ الهوى لا تفسدُ

    How can one whose heart is corrupt be mended

    When in it the ties of passion do not decay

  4. يا مُخبري كَيف الفريقُ أَشَملُهم

    مُتجمّعٌ أَم شَملُهم متبدّدُ

    O my informer, how is the beloved group -

    United or their union scattered?

  5. فَمَتى تُصيب سهامُ قوسي في الهوى

    وَمَتى سعاد بما أحاولُ تسعدُ

    When will my bow’s arrows hit their mark in love

    And when will I succeed in what I aspire and be happy?

  6. لَهفاً لقلبٍ لَم تزل نيرانهُ

    بينَ الأضالعِ حرّها لا يبردُ

    Yearning for a heart whose fires

    Burning inside never cool

  7. كَم مِن غيورٍ دونها قد صارَ لي

    في الناسِ يبرقُ في الوعيدِ ويرعدُ

    How many jealous rivals because of her

    Became to me among people flashing with threats and thunder

  8. بيضاء مَنظرُها لعيني جنّةٌ

    وَلِمُهجتي هيَ جمرةٌ تتوقّدُ

    Her appearance is paradise to my eyes

    And to my soul she is a blazing flame

  9. يبلى الزمان قديمهُ وجديدهُ

    وَهوايَ فيها طائلٌ متجدّدُ

    Time passes, its new and old

    And my passion in it is renewed

  10. فَالوجهُ مثلُ الصبحِ منها أبيضٌ

    وَالفرع مثلُ الليلِ منها أسودُ

    Her face is like the dawn, white

    Her hair like the night, black

  11. وَالثغرُ مثلُ الأقحوانِ وريقهُ

    أَحلى منَ الماءِ الزلال وأبردُ

    Her lips like budding pomegranate

    Sweeter than cool water and cooler

  12. وَبعيدةُ الأرجاءِ نازحُ شحطِها

    أَقصى وَأَنزح ما يكون وأبعدُ

    Her figure, full and heavy

    Furthest, remotest, farthest away

  13. جاوَزتها سحراً وتَحتي جسرةٌ

    مِن نسلِ شدقم كالحنيّةِ جلمدُ

    I visited her by night and under me a pony

    Of highbred stock, strong as granite

  14. ما كانَ مطلبُها وقبلةُ قَصدِها

    إلّا أَبو العرب الهمام الأمجدُ

    Her only goal, the object of her quest

    Was the chief of Arabs, the most glorious

  15. مَلكٌ أمورُ العالمين جميعها

    بيدي رياستهِ تحلُّ وتقعدُ

    A king whose command governs all worlds

    Through his leadership settling and rising

  16. ضاءَت أقاليمُ البلادِ بعدلهِ

    وَغَدت جيوش الجور منها تطردُ

    The regions of the world shine with his justice

    And armies of injustice are banished from them

  17. وَلَه يدٌ تَعلو على كلِّ الورى

    شرفاً وَلا تَعلو على يدهِ يدُ

    He has a hand that rises above all creation

    In honor, and no hand rises above his

  18. لَو طبع أنملهِ يحلُّ بجلمدٍ

    يوماً لأورقً منه ذاك الجلمدُ

    If his fingers were pressed into granite

    That granite would leaf from them one day

  19. لَو في السَما للإنسِ يحسنُ مقعد

    يوماً لكان له هنالك مقعدُ

    If the heavens suited mans’ abode

    He would have a seat ready there one day

  20. خوّاضُ بحرِ الحربِ في يومِ الوغا

    بينَ الفوارسِ والقنا متقصّدُ

    Plunging into battle’s sea on days of calamity

    Among knights, straight to the point

  21. في الموقفِ الضنكِ الّذي من هولهِ

    فيهِ الفرائضُ تقشعرّ وترعدُ

    In that terrible tight spot where from fear

    Obligatory acts shiver and shake

  22. لكَ في المَعالي يا ذؤابةَ يعرُبٍ

    مجدٌ تفوزُ به الرواةُ وتنجدُ

    You have glory O wild ass of Lu’ayy

    Which narrators gain and are helped by

  23. كافَحتَ فرسانَ العدا بكتائبٍ

    مِنها المَنايا والمنى يتولّدُ

    You battled knights of enemies with regiments

    From which death and purpose emerge

  24. فَقَضى حسامك فرضهُ لكَ طائعاً

    مِن حيثُ يركعُ في الرؤوسِ ويسجدُ

    So your sword fulfilled its duty to you willingly

    Beheading and prostrating wherever it landed

  25. وَأَنرتَ في الإسلامِ شمساً نورها

    تُطفى بهِ نارُ الضلالِ وتخمدُ

    And you shone in Islam a sun whose light

    Extinguishes the fire of misguidance and puts it out

  26. فَالآنَ لا متمجّسٌ فيه ولا

    مُتنصّرٌ فيه ولا متهوّدُ

    Now there is in it no magus and no

    Christian and no Jew

  27. فَاِفخر فإنّك تُبّعٌ مع تُبّعٍ

    شَرفاً وإنَّك بعد أسعدَ أسعدُ

    So boast for you are a Tubba’ along with Tubba’

    Noble and after happiness most fortunate
