1. أترى خرائدَ في الهوادجِ أم ظِبا

    جرّدن من أَلحاظهنّ لنا طبا

    Do I see mountain gazelles in the valleys, or a hyena

    Stripped of their gazes for us, a gift

  2. بيضٌ لنا جرّدن كلّ مهنّدٍ

    أَمضى من العضبِ المهنّد مضربا

    White are for us, they stripped every adorned one

    Smoother than a polished blade striking

  3. اِنظر بعينك نحوهنّ فقد بدت

    صورٌ أشفت بحسنهنّ تعجّبا

    Look with your eye towards them, for their forms have appeared

    Images that amazed with their beauty

  4. وَرخيمة الأطرافِ طاوية الحشا

    شمساً أضاءت بالشعاعِ من الخبا

    The soft-limbed one with coiled tresses

    A sun that shone with rays from the nooks

  5. باتَت تديرُ عليّ كأسَ مزاجها

    كدمِ الذبيحِ معتّقاً لن يقطبا

    She turned to me a cup of her wine

    Like aged sacrificial blood it will not coagulate

  6. فَمَتى أدارت مزجها لي أحمرا

    نَحوي ثَنته بأبيضا أو أشنبا

    So when she turned her wine red to me

    I bent it with white or yellow

  7. وكأنّما وسط الغلالةِ كوكبٌ

    حسن تدير على المنادم كَوكبا

    As if a planet amidst the darkness

    Beauty turns above the carpets like a planet

  8. قبّلت منها عقرباً فلثمت في

    للسع عقربها لنا في عقربا

    I kissed a scorpion from her and sucked

    The sting of her scorpion was sweet for us

  9. وَلقد سقيتُ النفس مِن رشفاتها

    ألذّ من ماءِ الغمامِ وأعذبا

    And I quenched my soul from her sips

    Sweeter than rainwater and more delicious

  10. ما إِن رَنت باللّحظِ إلّا غادَرت

    قَلبي على جمر الغرامِ مقلّبا

    No sooner she glanced with her eyes except she left

    My heart tossed on embers of passion

  11. تفترّ عن درّ ظللت متيّماً

    مِن حبّه فلق الفؤاد معذّبا

    She unveiled a hidden pearl I yearned for

    Splitting the heart from its love, tortured

  12. درٌّ تَلألأ وَهو غير مثقّب

    كالدرّ لاح منظّما ومثقّبا

    A pearl that glitters though it has no holes

    Like a drilled and stringed pearl

  13. وَعشيّة ودّعتها والركب قد

    زمّ المَطايا للنوى وتأهّبا

    And evening I bid her farewell, the caravan had

    Tightened the mounts to depart

  14. مالت إِلى التوديع واِنشطّت لها

    كفّ يصافحني البنانُ مخضبا

    She inclined to bid farewell and waved

    A palm that bids me farewell blood stained

  15. وَبَدت وَقد زالَ النقاب هناكَ عن

    ما كانَ منها بالنقاب منقّبا

    And there her veil was lifted

    What was veiled by the veil was unveiled

  16. وتوقّدت نارُ الغرامِ وشبّ في

    أَحشائِنا جمر الجوى وتلهّبا

    The fire of love was kindled and blazed within

    Our hearts, embers of passion burned

  17. تلك الّتي خالفت كلّ مؤنّب

    في حبّها العذريّ لام وأنّبا

    She who surpassed all admonishers

    In her chaste love, blamed and admonished

  18. وَلقد صحبت الدهر أغيد مُقبلاً

    وَصَحبتهُ من بعد أشمط أشيبا

    I accompanied life with a shining face

    And accompanied it after with a white beard

  19. فَرأيتُ في أَطباعهِ وخلاقه

    متلوّناً متغيّراً متقلّبا

    I saw in its nature and manners

    Fickle, changing, tossing

  20. وَوردت منه حوضَ عذب فاِنثنى

    لي صفوهُ متأجّناً متصلّبا

    And I attained from it a basin of fresh water that turned

    Turbid and bitter for me

  21. ما إِن صَفا لي مطعماً أو مشربا

    إلّا تكدّر مطعماً أو مشربا

    No sooner it cleared a drink or food for me

    Except it spoiled a drink or food

  22. ما بشّ لي بالودّ منه تودّداً

    إلّا وعبّس بعد ذاك وقطّبا

    No sooner it smiled at me affectionately

    Except it scowled afterwards and frowned

  23. كم أنب من رجواه ألف مهجة

    من حامل خفّي حنين واحببا

    How many hopes were betrayed by one who beguiled with affection

    While harboring malice and pretended love

  24. سَلبتني الدنيا غراباً أسوداً

    حتّى قَضتني بعد زارات أشهبا

    Life robbed me like a black crow

    Until after difficulties it left me gray-haired

  25. بكَ كيف ينجو من حوادث صرفها

    مَن لَم يَجد في الأرض عنها مهربا

    Woe to you! How can one escape its twisting fortunes

    If he finds no refuge from it on earth

  26. قرب البعيدُ فكان أَدنى منزلاً

    مِن قابِ قوسٍ في القياس وأقربا

    The far became nearer than a bow's shot

    In measurement and nearer in proximity

  27. سَلني وَخُذ رَأيي تجدني صادقاً

    في الرأيِ أقصد ما وجدت وأصوبا

    Ask me and take my advice, you will find me truthful

    In opinion, aiming for what is right and proper

  28. وَإِذا اِمتحنت وجدت منّي مذوداً

    ذلفاً أذودُ به وقلباً قلّبا

    And if tested, you will find me firm

    Shielding and protecting steadfastly

  29. إنّي اِمرؤ قد جرّب الدنيا وما

    من لم يجرّب مثل من قد جرّبا

    I am a man who has experienced life, not like one

    Who has not experienced what one experienced

  30. لا رام للطمع المذلّ ولم يكن

    برق إِذا ما لاح برقٌ خلّبا

    I do not covet vile greed, and never was

    Covetous when fortune’s lightning flashed

  31. وَالمرء إِن لم يسع لم يسمو ولو

    جمعت مناسبه العتيك ويشجبا

    One cannot excel if he does not strive, even if

    He gathered helpers and means

  32. كم قد أتيت بمعجزاتٍ دونها

    ما يعجز الفطنَ المفوّه قطرُبا

    How many miracles I came with, miracles that

    Leave the eloquent sage confounded

  33. ولئِن رأت شمس العلوم منيرة

    وَكشفت من ليل الجهالةِ غَيهبا

    If the shining sun of knowledge saw me

    And unveiled the darkness of ignorance

  34. وَركبت عيس المشكلات فكان من

    دون المراكب ظهرها لي مركبا

    If I rode the camel of problems, so that without ships

    Its back was a ship for me

  35. وَغدوت في طلبِ العلا أختال في

    ظهرِ البسيطة مشرقاً أَو مغربا

    I coursed in seeking knowledge, appearing in the simple desert

    Rising or setting

  36. والحرّ يشري وَجهه إن ضاء في

    طلبِ العلا والمجد أسفع أكهبا

    While the free light their faces if they shine

    Seeking knowledge and glory, dark and ashen

  37. وَلَقد جعلت له التأدّب سنّة

    والصبر فرض والتواضع مذهبا

    And I made etiquette a habit for it

    Patience an obligation, humility a creed

  38. وَكذا الثناء أخاً شفيقاً والعلا

    أُمّاً كذاك المجد يدعا لي أبا

    And praise a caring brother, and knowledge

    A mother, and glory I called its father

  39. وَالمكرُمات الغرّ تنسبني كما

    نسبت إليها القعهنية قعصبا

    Bounties have attributed me as if they

    Attributed to themselves Qa'qabiyya

  40. وَمطرّز بالدهر قد أهدت له

    ريح الجنوب الرايح المتحلّبا

    Embroidered by time, I gifted it

    The southern breeze, the scented winds

  41. هرق الغمامُ عليه أدمعه فلم

    ينفكّ إِلّا أن يسحّ ويسكبا

    The clouds poured its tears on it until

    It ceased not to wipe and spill

  42. فَسقاه علّاً بعد نهلٍ مردفا

    وَكساه بالأزهار لوناً معجبا

    So it quenched it after drinking, and dressed it

    In flowers, a wondrous attire

  43. حتّى تضاحك نوره من بعد ما

    صحبت لياليه الربيع المخصبا

    Until its light smiled after the spring nights

    That accompanied its darknesses, fertile

  44. تحكي خلاق عرار نشر عراره

    بل إِنّها وجدت ألذّ وأطيبا

    It describes Araar's nature spreading Araar's meadows

    But it found more delicious and sweeter

  45. العادلُ الملك الّذي أخلاقه

    لِلمُعتَفينَ ألذّ من نفس الصبا

    The just king whose manners are to the loyal

    Sweeter than the breath of youth

  46. صعدت به رتبٌ علَت حتّى اِنتهت

    ليثاً وقوساً في السماء وعقربا

    Ranks ascended with him until they ended

    A lion and a bow in the sky and a scorpion

  47. أَذكا بديهته وأشحذ عزمه

    صرف النوائب حين حكّ وهذّبا

    It kindled his insight and sharpened his resolve

    Dispelling afflictions when it reasoned and refined

  48. ما غالب الأيّام في أحداثِها

    وَخطوبِها إلّا وكانَ الأغلبا

    It did not succumb to the days with their events

    And afflictions, but was ever triumphant

  49. بحرٌ خضمّ إِن تفضّل أو عطا

    طودٌ أشمّ إِذا اِنتدى وإذا اِحتبا

    A deep sea, if it grants and bestows

    A tall mountain, when called upon and loved

  50. ومهنّد عضب المضاربِ حدّه

    ما كلّ عَن قطعِ الخطوب ولا نبا

    And a polished blade when wielded

    None can withstand its cutting off of calamities

  51. وَغضنفر في الغابِ يحمي شبله

    طوراً وينشب في القنيصة مخلبا

    And a lion defending its cub

    Sometimes, and pouncing with its claws at times

  52. ما هزّ ثعلب رمحهِ في معركٍ

    إلّا وأورد في الكماةِ الثعلبا

    Never did it brandish its fox spear in fray

    Except it pierced the fox's abdomen

  53. أَنسته أبكارُ المكارمِ والعلا

    أسما وفرتن والرباب وزينبا

    The virgins of bounties forget him not

    Praising him, as did Virtue, Abundance, and Zainab

  54. لو قيس راجح حلمه ووقاره

    وَزناً لوازنَ يَذبُلاً أَو كَبكبا

    If his patience and dignity were weighed

    They would outweigh, bulk for bulk, a mule or gazelle

  55. يا كَوكب العليا وبهجتها ومن

    لِجليسه خفض الجناح ورحّبا

    O star of the heights and its splendor, you who

    For your companion lowered a wing and made room

  56. لَم أنسَ منك خلائقاً قد أشبهت

    روض الغضيض في دمث الربربا

    I forgot not the manners that resembled

    The meadows at first rains, fresh and raining

  57. فَسما ثم قد كان أخرج حكمه

    في سابق الأقدار جدّك من سبا

    So ascend, as providence issued its decree for your ancestor

    I made you a refuge for me when the torrent overflowed

  58. إنّي جعلتك مستلاذاً لى ذما

    سيل في طوفانه بلغ الربا
