1. عُج بالمطيِّ على رسومِ البانِ

    لتَرى هناك مسارحَ الغزلانِ

    Ride swiftly with the steed towards the ruins,

    To see there the playgrounds of the gazelles,

  2. واِستخبر الطللَ القديمَ عن الألى

    كانوا بِعرصتِه من السكَّانِ

    And ask the ancient ruins about the people

    Who once inhabited its grounds.

  3. ربعٌ تنكَّر بعدَ أهليهِ وقد

    عبثت بجدَّته يدُ الحدثانِ

    A land that changed after its inhabitants,

    And which the hands of time altered its ancientness.

  4. بانوا بأمثالِ الجآذر وضّح

    خمص البطونِ نواعم الأبدانِ

    They appeared like tree trunks, soft bodied,

    Their litters weigh down the backs of the steeds,

  5. يثقلن أصلابَ المطايا فوقَها

    بمآكمٍ كأقاور الكثبانِ

    Like the sand dunes.

    Moons fully rounded except

  6. أقمارُ تمّ غير أنَّ تمامَها

    لم يثنِه شهرٌ إلى نقصانِ

    That no month diminished their fullness.

    When they glance with their eyes and eyelids

  7. وإِذا نظرنَ سبينَ أفئدةَ الورَى

    منهنَّ بالألحاظِ والأجفانِ

    At the hearts of mankind,

    Each one from behind her veil looks as if

  8. من كلِّ جائلةِ الوشاحِ كأنَّها

    من عفر وجرة أمُّها نعمانِ

    She were the mother of Nu'man, from 'Afra and Jurah.

    Upon them is the freshness of youth as if it were

  9. وعليها بكر الشباب كأنهّا

    غصنٌ تهزَّع في غصونِ البانِ

    A branch swaying amidst the branches of the wild almond.

    A branch, if touched and stirred,

  10. غصنٌ إذا ماست به وتخطّرت

    خجلت لديه موائسُ الأغصانِ

    The branches would be shy before it.

    And it gladdens your heart what is perfected in it

  11. ويسرّ قلبَك ما تكامل فيه من

    وردٍ ومن طلعٍ ومن رمَّانِ

    Of roses, buds and pomegranates,

    Telling of the Khezrana cane, or the cane

  12. تحكي قضيبَ الخيزرانةِ أو قضي

    بَ نضارِها في اللين والألوانِ

    In its blossoms, softness and colors.

    And when you look, your sight divides

  13. وَإِذا نظرت تقسّمت حوباك في

    جنَّات فردوسٍ وفي نيرانِ

    Into gardens of Paradise and into fires.

    Reproach me not for love, for passion

  14. أَمفنّدي في الحبِّ مهلاً فالهوى

    قد صار لي ديناً من الأديانِ

    Has become for me a creed of creeds.

    Does reproach benefit the heart of a man

  15. هَل ينفعُ التفنيدُ في قلب اِمرئٍ

    كلف إلى أحبابِه حنّانِ

    Who is devoted tenderly to his loved ones?

    An empty wilderness we never heard of

  16. وتنوفة قفراء لم نَسمع بها

    إلّا أغاريداً منَ الألحانِ

    Except for the melodies of tunes.

    I passed by its departing people with every

  17. جاوزتُ نازحها بكلَّ عرندس

    غرثا الحقائب جسرة مذعانِ

    Caravan - loads overturned and resigned.

    On a dark night while my companions

  18. في ليلةٍ مغطوشةٍ وأصاحبي

    يتناشدون غرائبَ الألحانِ

    Recite the strangest of tunes,

    Reciting poetry in their vigil

  19. يتناشدون الشعرَ في مسراهمُ

    وكذا التناشدُ ديدنُ الفتيانِ

    For such recital is the wont of youths,

    Poetry whose words repeat

  20. شعر يردّده معاني اللفظ في

    مدحِ المتوَّجِ عامرِ بن سنانِ

    In praising the crowned Amir Bin Sanan,

    Standing lofty, highest in rank,

  21. صمد رقا أعلى المراتب رتبةً

    غاياتها سمكت إلى كيوانِ

    Its heights touching the stars.

    Oman was adorned by its king and his justice

  22. زانت عمانُ بملكِه وبعدلِه

    وسمت به في الفخر أهلُ عُمانِ

    And through him excelled the people of Oman.

    O Peerless One, none of the people of India

  23. يا واحداً ما في بني هندٍ ولا

    بذي يزنٍ ولا بهرام والنعمانِ

    Nor those of Yazin, nor Bahram and Nu'man

    Preceded you in their times, and you preceded them

  24. سبقوك في أزمانِهم وسبقتَهم

    يومَ الفخارِ بحلبةِ الميدانِ

    On the day of pride in the field of battle.

    And I take pride in your people, the best of peoples,

  25. واِفخر بقومِك خير قومٍ إنَّهم

    أولى الورَى بالتّختِ والتيجانِ

    For they are most deserving of the throne and crown.

    You see them on the day of hardship in battle

  26. وتراهمُ يومَ الكريهةِ في الوَغى

    يَتخطَّفون جماجمَ الفرسانِ

    Snatching the skulls of horsemen,

    Snatching the skulls of foes with their swords

  27. يخطفن هاماتِ العدا بسيافِهم

    خطف الكواكب خاطف الشيطانِ

    As planets snatch the shooting stars.

    Like lions on the backs of thoroughbreds

  28. مثل الأسود على متون صواهلٍ

    تهوي بهم في الحرب كالعقبانِ

    Swooping with them in war like eagles.

    And to you, O sun of the time, a gift

  29. وإليك يا شمسَ الزمانِ خريدةً

    جاءت بأفصح منطقٍ وبيانِ

    Came with the most eloquent speech.

    Metered in its composition and prosody

  30. موزونة في ضربِها وعروضِها

    تنبيك عن قسٍّ وعن سحبانِ

    Warning you of severity and aggression.
