1. ألا هل فتحت من الشوق بابا

    وخاطبت من لا يطيق الخطابا

    Oh! Have you opened a door of longing,

    And spoken to one unable to converse?

  2. فما من ملامك طارحت رشداً

    ولا أَنت فيه اِهتديت الصوابا

    You have cast away no blame,

    Nor have you therein found the right.

  3. فدع ذا الملام فبرّك عندي

    أراه بماء العقوق مشابا

    Leave this blame, bless me,

    I see it with the water of filial disobedience muddied.

  4. ودعني وحبّي لأسما فإنّي

    أرى حبّها مذهباً لن يعابا

    And leave me and my love for the idols, for I

    See that their love is an unblemished path.

  5. خذ الحزم يا صاح في كلّ أمر

    تجشّمته صحبة واِرتكابا

    Take caution, O friend, in every matter

    You have burdened with companionship and commitment,

  6. وإيّاك صحبة خلّ إذا ما

    غدرت به المهمات هابا

    And beware the company of a traitor, if

    Misfortunes have betrayed him, terrified.

  7. وخالل فتى الودّ عنّا إِذا ما

    دعوت لأمر عظيم أَجابا

    And draw near a gallant man, if

    You call for a great matter, he answers.

  8. يُواليك في كلّ أمرٍ وطورٍ

    يقاسمك الكأس شهداً وصابا

    He stands with you in every matter and circumstance,

    Sharing with you the cup, honey and wine.

  9. ثبوت لعهدك إن غبت عنه

    فعهدك لو غبت ما عنه غابا

    Steadfast in your covenant, if absent from him,

    For your covenant, though you are absent, has not.

  10. فما كلّ ذي صحبة في البرايا

    يسرّ المصاحبَ فيما أصابا

    So not every companion in the wilds

    Gratifies the companion in what he suffers.

  11. فَكم واردٍ في السراب ماءً

    ولم يلق ذلك إلّا سرابا

    How many wells in the mirage are water,

    But that is found only a mirage?

  12. ولُذ بالمليك عرار سليل

    فلاح إذا أناب الدهر نابا

    Take shelter in an honorable, highborn man,

    A noble blade, if days decline.

  13. فَذلك للمسلمين ملاذٌ

    إِذا الدهرُ أَنشب ظفراً ونابا

    For Muslims he is the refuge,

    When days bare fangs and bite.

  14. مليك إِذا ما تجلّى بدستٍ

    رأيت الجلال عليه حجابا

    A king - when he is revealed with a hand

    You see majesty upon him like a veil.

  15. تمنحه إِن شئت في كلّ أمرٍ

    تجده أعزّ الملوك جنابا

    Grant him, if you wish, in every matter,

    You will find him the proudest of kings, august.

  16. وإِن أَنت كيّفته كان في ال

    كونِ غَيثاً وليثاً مهابا

    And if you humble him, in the universe he is

    A raincloud and fearsome lion, revered.

  17. تقود إِلى الوفدِ في كلّ يوم

    جمالاً ضخاماً وخيلاً عرابا

    He leads to the envoy each day

    Beauty, immensity, and Arabian steeds.

  18. سحاب الندا وَالعطا من يديه

    تجلجل يوم النوال السحابا

    The clouds of his generosity and gifts

    Thunder, the day they are bestowed, like clouds.

  19. وَأَسلو هواها وَقد صار لحمي

    طعاماً إِليه وَماء شرابا

    I have made his love lawful, so his flesh

    has become food for me, his water drink.

  20. وَإِنّي وَإِن عذبتني اِعتماداً

    لمستعذب في هواها العذابا

    And if he torments me out of pride

    I find the torment in his love sweet.

  21. وَكم لي مِن لَوعةٍ قد شكاها

    فؤاد على لاهب الجمر ذابا

    How much burning agony my heart has complained of

    Melting upon fiery embers!

  22. هيَ الشمسُ لكنّما هي شمسٌ

    تجلّ الخيام معاً والقبابا

    She is the sun - but she is a sun

    Who lights equally tents and domes.

  23. فَما رقرقت لحظها قطّ إلّا

    بِأسهمهِ في فؤادي أصابا

    Never has her glance flickered

    Except with arrows in my heart she struck.

  24. تُريك سنا البدرِ منها إذا ما

    أَزالت هنالك عنها القبابا

    She shows you the brilliance of the full moon, when

    She unveils it there, removing her wrappings.

  25. فَفي الحرّ تشبه كانون طبعاً

    وَتُشبه في زمن البردِ آبا

    So in heat she resembles July in nature

    And in cold weather resembles April.

  26. إِذا أَنا قبّلتُ لم أَدر طلعاً

    أقبِّلُ أَم لؤلؤاً أم حبابا

    When I kiss her I do not know, is it

    A bud I kiss, or a pearl, or seeds?

  27. أَغارُ على ناعمِ الجسم منها

    إِذا هيَ أَلقت عليه الثيابا

    I am jealous of the delicate bodied one from her

    When she casts her clothes upon it.

  28. وَأحسدُ عودَ البشام إذا ما

    تَرشّف من ثغر فيها الرضابا

    And I envy the rosewood stick when

    It is honored by the striking of her lips.

  29. فيا فوزه إِذ جرى في لماها

    وقبّل منها الثنايا العذابا

    Oh, its delight when it flowed in her moisture

    And kissed her soft, supple hollows!

  30. وَليل سرَينا به وهو فيما

    رَأيناه في الكون يحكي الغرابا

    By the night we walked in, which in what

    We saw in the world, tells of a crow.

  31. كأنّ النجوم مصابيح رتب

    تلألأن ثحثجة واِضطرابا

    As if the stars were lamps set up

    Glittering, bustling, and confused,

  32. كأنّ السماء صحيفة رأس

    تطاردُ فيه المشيب المشابا

    As if the sky were a page's head

    Chasing the greying there interspersed.

  33. وَقد ملّت اليعملات سراها

    فلم يترك السير فيها هبابا

    The meadows were tired of their expanse

    Leaving no stillness there, not even a breath.

  34. بداويّة ما بها من أنيسٍ

    يؤنس من مرّ فيها الإيابا

    A village with no companion in it

    To comfort one passing through there again.

  35. غمام تَجلجل بالجود غيثاً

    حكى الغيث جلجله واِنسكابا

    Clouds thundering with rain like generosity

    The rain mimicking its thunder and pouring.

  36. وَلولاه ما أشرق الملك وجها

    وَلا الدهر بشّ ولا العيش طابا

    Without it the king's face would not shine

    Nor would days smile, nor living be sweet.

  37. أحاط سماءَ المعالي بعزم

    منَ الصارمِ العضب أمضى ذبابا

    With his stern, frowning resolve he has encompassed

    The heavens of glory, repelling insects.

  38. سَجاياه في الناس كافت فكانت

    على مستحقّ العقاب عقابا

    His character among the people suffices, so it is

    Upon the deserving of punishment, punishment.

  39. أَقام لأهلِ النكال نكالا

    وأهدى لأهل الثواب ثوابا

    He established torment for the people of evil

    And bestowed reward upon the people of goodness.

  40. إِليك ابن نبهان جاءت تخطّ

    على الطرق مثل الكتاب كتابا

    To you, O Son of Nabhan, have come inscribed

    Upon the roads like writing, lines.

  41. إِذا جرّرت في الطريق سطوراً

    رأيت المداد دماً ولُعابا

    If you drag lines in the road

    You will see the ink blood and spittle.

  42. أَنت اِصطفتك اِختباراً وحلّت

    جَميع الورى جفوة واِجتنابا

    You were chosen by test and all

    Creation turned away, aloof and avoiding.

  43. وَجاءت لركب للقياك جاؤوا

    عمار البلاد معاً والخرابا

    And there came to your band those who built

    The lands together, and those who destroyed them.

  44. وَلولاك ما فارقوا قطّ أهلاً

    وَما أَزمعوا رحلةً واِغترابا

    Without you, they would never have left family

    Nor journeyed, exiled.

  45. فَشكراً لك اليوم لا الجود ودّي

    ولا مُرتجي فيض كفّيك خابا

    So thank you today - not my generosity, nor am I

    One hoping your palm's outpouring has failed.
