Rejoice with her, enjoy her company,
The star has set, the night is nigh.
The dewy breeze of the eve blows gently,
Bearing the sweet scent of flowers.
And the gentlest of all breezes
Blows at dawn, north or south.
Alas, would that it carried my regards,
To deliver them to my beloved.
And inform her of what I endured
That eve when we left the sand dunes.
I suffer, and see no cure for my sickness,
Except the one whose medicine made me ill.
And I have no remedy for my malady,
Wondrous is this paradox indeed!
I melt with youthful passion, and it's right,
For one like me to melt with ardent love.
When the critic finds fault, what can I say,
Except to weep in reply to the critic.
And if a gazelle calls out and weeps
Over the pastures, I will answer her call.
By my life! The day we parted, my bliss,
I knew would be a day of adversity.
They maligned me, and I went on shedding,
Tears in their footsteps, pouring like rain.
At dawn I left my body stretched out,
My heart followed her camel litter.
With my soul I followed her camel litter,
Bearing the darling of the Arab clan.
A gazelle, though not of the gazelles,
Rather, a gazelle that grazes on hearts,
Revealing the full moon in her beauty,
And swaying with grace like a willowy bough.
No wonder I am infatuated with her,
Lavishing excessive passion and verse.
For my heart is madly in love with Mayya,
Though it was once prudent and wise.
And before her, it loved only Hind,
Since it first knew the pangs of love.
I repent of passion, but not of her,
I shall never repent of her till my dying day.
O you who rejoice at my misery, wait,
Spare me, let not misfortune befall me.
For when the raven croaks over the dwellings of a people,
Soon will your own courtyard hear lamentation.
And when calamity befalls a neighbor,
Expect that its place will be near.
A woman whose separation I fear,
My love tossing within me, ebbing and flowing,
How long will you traverse the desert out of love,
And roam its winding paths south and north?
I said to her, "Let me plunge into its perils,
And test the unknown."
If after the bonds of life you are far from me,
No matter, though I am absent.
And if nations have drawn near, they cannot,
Stop my stay among them.
The absent will return, and all people
Inclined to morals, will return.
The absent ones will return, and all people
Prone to vice, will return.
And I am resolved to visit the noble king,
The rightly-guided, judicious lord.
And praise him as befits him, for I see,
Praise of him cannot go amiss.
A lineage preserving aged warriors,
Among its valiant heroes when war flares up,
When the lances intersect and pierce
Among the ribs of its stalwart heroes.
They hurled into a sea of armies
A surging deluge on land and sea.
It's enough that if you meet a people,
Perfect in courage, noble and generous,
Whenever you ask of them, you ask
One generous of palm, bountiful and giving.
O father of glories, how many barrens,
Have we traversed, trying the stamina of mounts,
And I have presented from my poetry and ode,
Goods granting success to the poet.
Goods of wisdom, guaranteed for their guide
That his verse will not disappoint.
And how many envious rivals of me,
Whose tricks melted away like embers.
It is enough that my jealous rivals see me
Turn to you, O triumphant king.
