The physician was perplexed by the state of my illness.
He said, “I see something in your body that gives cause for concern.
I felt your pulse, and my probing led me
to a pain with a wondrous tale.
What is this that afflicts you? Come, tell me.”
So my answer to him was sobbing.
I said, “O physician, estrangement is my malady,
and my heart, O physician, is the grief-stricken one.”
He shook his head in wonder at my words
and said, “Love has no physician.”
What he had said greatly pleased me,
and I replied, “Indeed it does—when the beloved is pleased.”
He said, “The beloved is the cure, so do not be remiss.”
I said, “Yes—but the beloved does not answer.”
Ah, is there a sympathizer who will weep for my sorrow?
For I am a lovesick wanderer, alone and far from home.
