We trod the saffron meadows, and
the white goshawks caught the red partridges for us.
The thickets did not shield them from us; instead,
we breached their sanctuary with baying hounds—
hounds scenting the wind and racing, their bellies
skimming the ground like darting arrows;
and hounds craning aloft with their necks, as though
those among them that curved were heads of polo mallets;
and some with tongues lolling out, as though those tongues were
beards on submissive, scant-bearded men.
With them we combed the lowland fields thoroughly, as though they were
the fingertips of a fair woman carding cotton.
We paired goshawks with falcons, and in circles flew
our peregrines, after hunting the zamālij birds.
