O Tahir, I am leaving Khorasan
And asking of it, though I've naught to say
Shall I speak truth or veil it in my speech
Whichever you choose, assemblies relay
Caravans have carried it and tribes concurred
Finest orators rehearsed, nobles heard
And I, though knowing praise and blame's extremes
Where slander lurks, truth's champion girded, stirred
In truth I say, though you no fondness show,
To you I'm turned, wherever I may go
A pact of honor, dignity maintained
And word and deed in balance, equal flow
If we find no benevolence, at least
A fair judge, one who for justice increased
So do not let your anger sever ties
For before you, many hands have oppressed
O Tahir, if you show grace, I too shall bless
If you withhold, then I in kind repress
