  1. لمّا علا البازي السّفينة للنّوى

    صاح الغرابُ ودمعهُ مسفوحُ

    When the sailor climbed the ship with purpose

    The raven cried, its tears overflowing:

  2. يا راكبا في البحر عنّي نازحا

    معهُ التصبّرُ نازحٌ والرُّوحُ

    "O you who travel the seas, leaving me behind!

    With you go patience and spirit both.

  3. ما سرت إلا في بُحور مدامعي

    بالفلك والأنفاسُ منّي ريحُ

    I wandered only in the oceans of my tears

    My breath and this boat - from me they flee.

  4. فلذاك صحتُ وقد علا طُوفانُها

    بالصّحب إذ ركب السفينة نُوحوا

    And so I cry as her storm swells high,

    As my friends board the ship as did Noah."
