ألا دلّني في الوصل كيف سبيلهُ
إليك فقد ضاقت عليّ المسالكُ
Oh, show me how the path to union may be found—
for all the ways to you have closed in upon me.
ألا ليت شعري هل بقربك من غذا
على رمق يُحظى وهل يُتدراك
Oh, would that I knew: whether nearness to you, for one who has become
reduced to his last breath, may be won—and whether he can yet be saved.
وهل ياعزيز الحسن يُرضيك أن ترى
بأنّي مملوكٌ وأنك مالكُ
And, O my fair beloved, does it please you to see
that I am a slave while you are the master?
ولو أنّ دهري بعدُ بعدك والجفا
بقربك يوما جاد لي وهو ضاحكُ
And if my fate, after your distance and estrangement,
should one day, smiling, grant me nearness to you,
لصحتُ بأعلى الصّوت منّي فارحا
وأنشدتُ هذا اليومُ عندي مُباركُ
I would cry out at the very top of my voice, rejoicing,
and chant: “This day, to me, is blessed!”
