قالوا اعتلّ ولم يعملوا

قالوا اعتلّ ولم يعملوا

بعلّة السّقم ولا حُكمه

بعلّة السّقم ولا حُكمه

They said, “He has fallen ill,” though they did not know

the cause of the sickness, nor its nature.

بل إنما يهوي الضّنى لحظهُ

بل إنما يهوي الضّنى لحظهُ

وقد سرى للجسم من سُقمه

وقد سرى للجسم من سُقمه

Rather, his gaze merely yearns for the gazelle,

and from its affliction the sickness has spread into his body.

ما رضي السّقمُ لهُ مُنزلا

ما رضي السّقمُ لهُ مُنزلا

باللّحظ حتّى دبّ في جسمه

باللّحظ حتّى دبّ في جسمه

The sickness was not content to make its home

in the gaze, until it crept into his body.
