زار بعد الجفا وخلف الوُعود

يا ليالي الوصال بالفوز عُودي

After estrangement, he visited me, breaking his promises

Oh nights of union, return to me with success

زارني والعيونُ قد كحلتها

راحُ أيدي الدّجى بميل الهجود

He visited me while my eyes were darkened with kohl

The hands of darkness carried the inclination to retire

حامل الصّبح والدُّجى في محيّا

وفُروع عليه مثل البنود

Bringing the dawn while darkness was still on his cheeks

And branches upon him like the bundles

حين جلى الشّعور عنها شهدنا

طلعة الشمس في اللّيالي السّود

When he uncovered his hair, we saw

The rising sun during the dark nights

ساحرُ الطّرف ليس يُنكرُ منهُ

فعلُ سحر وقد أتى بشهود

The charming glance cannot be denied by him

It is the act of magic and it came with witnesses

حُبّه بالفؤاد واللّحظ داع

وبنجم من خدّه مرصُود

His love called upon my heart and glance

And with a star from his cheek it was aimed

ذُو قوام من الأراكة أحنى

وفُؤاد أقسى من الجلمود

Of a slim figure that bent down

And a heart harder than solidified lava

تتهاوى البدُورُ في الأفق شوقا

لسنا وجهه هُويّ السّجود

The houses in the horizon yearn in longing

To kiss his beautiful face, prostrating down

فإلى كم أسرُّ وجدي فيه

وهواه يسرُّني في الوجود

To what extent do I conceal my passion for him

And his love makes me happy in existence

جحدتني لامٌ جحدت هواها

من عذاريه فهي لامُ الجحود

The blamer blamed me, denying her love

She is the blamer of denial from her chastity

بات يجلو لنا حُميّا على رو

ض مُحيّا زها بورد الخدُود

He spent the night shining radiantly upon a cheek

Brightened by the roses of his reddened cheeks

أردُ العذب من لماهُ وأستق

طرُ لي بالحيا مياه الوُرُود

I want the sweetness of his saliva and I sip

For myself with life the waters of roses

في رياض زهت بمزهر عُود

وهزار شدا بمزهر عُود

In gardens bloomed with the blossoms of lentisk

And meadows lush with the blossoms of lentisk

وسواق بها جوار علينا

وجوار من السّواقي الغيد

And streams wherein neighbors visit us

And neighbors from the pouring springs

وعليلُ النّسيم مرّ بآس

يشتفي من زلالها بورود

And the breeze passed by, suffering

Drinking from its freshness among roses

لي قضى السّعدُ بالمنى وشُهودي

كلُّ عدل من غصنها أملود

So that fortune may decide for me as wished and witnessed

Every justice from its branch is flexible

ما سواها على القضاء شُهودٌ

أترى قاضيا بغير شُهود

Other than it, witnesses upon destiny are false

Do you see a judge without witnesses?

أيّ يوم نظمته بجبيب

وزهير يطيب نظم العقود

What day did I compose it? My beloved one

And Zuhair makes rhythmic poetry of necklaces

وغُصونُ الرّياض ترقُص وجدا

في حُلى زهرها بخضر البرُود

The branches of gardens dance joyfully

Adorned in its blossoms with green pastures

لا بمرّ النّسيم ترقُص بل من

طرب هزّها ووجد شديد

Not by the passing breeze do they dance, but from

Ecstasy that shook it and intense passion

لقدُوم الرّضا المليك علي

بابنا ابنُ الحسين سعد الوُجود

Due to the coming of the king Al-Reda

Our master, son of Hussein, happiness of existence

ملكٌ ما انتشت غمائمُ حرب

عنهُ إلا انجلت بصرع الأُسود

A king whose battle clouds have never dispersed

Except to clear with the killing of lions

ملكُ ما انثنى عن الطّرد إلا

بعدُوّ في إثره مصفود

A king whom the expelled enemy never ceased to follow

Tied up behind him in succession

إن يسلّ الحسام تجمد عداه

وتسيلُ الدّماءُ بعد الجمود

If he unsheathes the sword, his enemies freeze

And blood flows after solidification

فوق سبّاقة إذا صال عنها

في العدا فالبُروقُ تحت الرُّعود

When he rides off on his swift horse against the enemy

Lightening bolts are under the thunder

إن يشبّ العدُوُّ نيران حرب

منهُ كانت عليه ذات وقُود

If the enemy ignites the fires of war against him

It would be fueled against himself

وغدا حرُّهُنّ بردا عليه

وسلاما كأنّها من خُمود

And tomorrow their heat becomes cold upon him

And safety as if it were extinguished

ملكٌ ماجدٌ حليمٌ كريمٌ

جُودُهُ ناسخٌ لكلّ وُجود

A glorious, forbearing, generous king

His generosity erases all existence

ناشرُ العهدل وهو للجور طاو

واقفٌ في الأحكام عند الحدُود

Spreading justice while he deters injustice

Standing at the limits in his rulings

مُقتف للهدى به الشّرعُ أضحى

وهو رحبُ الفنا رفيعُ العمود

Following guidance, the canon with him became

Spacious, lofty, straight in pillars

صالحُ الفعل صادقُ القول واف

بوفا العهد مُنجزٌ للوُعُود

Righteous in action, truthful in words, loyal

In keeping promises, fulfilling vows

يقطعُ الدّهر بين تدريس علم

ورُكوع لربّه وسُجود

He spends time between teaching knowledge

And bowing to his Lord in prostration

بصحيح الحديث والعلم لاه

وعُلوم التّفسير والتّوحيد

With authentic narrations and knowledge inspired in him

The sciences of exegesis and monotheism

قد تحلّى بعفّة ووقار

وتُقى وافر وفضل مزيد

He has adorned himself with chastity, dignity

Abundant consciousness, and excellence

وبعزم مضى وقُوّة صبر

وعُلا همّة ورأي سديد

With resolute determination, patience, strength

Sublime ambition, and proper opinion

سار من تُونس بجيش كثيف

مُستمدّا بالنّصر والتّأييد

He marched from Tunis with a dense army

Empowered with victory and divine support

همّهُ القطعُ للفساد وإصلاحُ

جميع البلاد بالتّمهيد

His goal being to eliminate corruption and reform

All the lands with preparation

وأتى والأنامُ تُثني عليه

بمديح الفعال والتحميد

And he came while people praised him

With praise of his actions and gratitude

أمنت سُبلهم من الخوف خليأ

من بها والدٌ على مولود

He secured their roads from fear, completely

Empty of an adversary and plotting of enviers

نحنُ من روض أمن دولته في

خفض عيش به وظلّ مديد

We are in the meadow of the security of his rule, living

Humbly with lasting shade

عجبا نحنُ منهُ في خفض عيش

وترانا من خفضه في صُعود

How wondrous! We are humble in his humility

Yet we ascend through his humility

أيّها المالكُ الّذي يحتمي عن

حدّ أوصافه العلا بحدُود

O King whom the highest attributes cannot encompass

You are associated with security and prosperity

انت بالامن والسعادة مقرون

وبالفضل والمقام الحميد

And excellence, position and praise

You are safe in God's fortress from the eyes of enemies and schemes of haters

أنت من حصن ربّنا في أمان

من عُيون العدى وكيد الحسود

The lucky stars draw good fortune from you

When you decide the affairs of the world with happiness

تستمدُّ الكواكبُ السّعد منكم

حين تقضي على الورى بسعود

If you called on the stars when ascending

They would tumble towards you when ascending

لو دعوت النّجوم حال صُعود

لتهاوت إليك حال الصّعود

If you called on the mountains, though firmly rooted

They would hasten towards you effortlessly

لو دعوت الجبال وهي رواس

لسعت نحوكم بغير سُمود

Good fortune has spared you every disliked thing

And spared you the war of the stubborn enemy

قد كفتك السّعود كلّ كريه

وكفتكم حرب العدوّ العنيد

Whoever strived against you was unsuccessful

Even if sheltered by Thamud

ما سعى في الخلاف عنك وإنعا

مُك عمّ البلاد غيرُ كنود

You will lead the defiant from plains and mountains

With good fortune before soldiers

ستقودُ العصاة من سهل أرض

وجبال بالسّعد قبل الجنود

Can one who you've protected with it refuse you

When you've corrupted those crowds?

هل لمنّاع امتناع حماها

منك إذ أفسدت بتلك الحشود

You have fined the weakness of who you've fined

And bent them in chains and shackles

غرمت ضعف ضف ما نهبتهُ

وانثنت في سلاسل وقُيود

And they returned with corruption, a spy, so they returned

From virtue in the clothes of hides

وارتدت بالفساد عيّار فارتد

دت من العرى في ثياب الجلود

And I see every city that defied you

Paired with ruin and threats

وأرى كلّ بلدة خالفتكم

قُورنت بالخلاء والتّهديد

Every rebel, defying you, did not succeed

Even if protected by Thamud

كلُّ عاص مُخالف لك لم ينجح

ولو كان يحتمي بثمود

Your forbearance emboldened the corrupters

Until they coveted the impossible

جرّأ المفسدين حلمك حتّى

طمعوا في الوُجُود بالمفقود

Does your patience that deluded the deluded not deserve

That good fortune subjugates the envious?

أفإن غرّ حلمك الغمر هلاّ

أرغم السّعدُ منك أنف الحقود

With you, time relented regarding us and became

Familiar after aloofness and estrangement

بك ريض الزّمانُ فينا وأضحى

آنسا بعد نُفرة وشُروُد

So receive good tidings of openings after openings

For you, and attain the intended goal

فابشرن بالفتوح إثر فُتوح

لك واظفر بغاية المقصود

The crescent of the sky will become a full moon

If it appears while still waxing

فهلالُ السّماء يكملُ بدرا

إن بدا وهو آخذٌ في المزيد

And congratulations for an arrival to you in which

There is a season for the world and the greatest feast

وتهنّأ بمقدم لك فيه

موسمٌ للورى وأعظمُ عيد

After we suffered longing for you until

All yearned for you, even the aloof

بعد أن شفّنا لك الشّوقُ حتّى

كل يشتاقُكم حشا الجلمود

You traversed every part of the world and it longed for you

Every non-Arab and Arab and newborn

شقت كلّ الورى وشاقت إليكم

كلّ عجما وناطق ووليد

You marched towards the Green Land so everything in it became

Green through you, whether flourishing or withered trees

سرت نحو الخضراء فاخضرّ منها

كلّ ذاو بكم ويابس عُود

If you had not marched towards it, it would have marched

Towards you with homes and lofty buildings

انت لو لم تسر إليها لسارت

لك بالدُّور والبناء المشيد

So to you, the land has adorned itself with flowers

And it is green from the sprouts in its seeds

فلك الأرضُ بالزُّهور تحلّت

وهي من خُضر نبتها في بُزُود

That celebrates your greatness, adorned with beauty

Its crafting is from the thoughts of my mind

هاك منّي حسان خُود تهان

في علاكم تزري بحسن الخدود

And the girls of my mind were stagnant

For a long time one has exerted himself in attacking me

صُغتها من عليل فكر قريح

وجواري قريحتي في جُمود

Among the foolish, ignorant and envious

So time passed, O Prince of the Lands

من زمان لهُ اجتهادٌ بقذفي

بين واش وجاهل وحسود

Turning away from insulting me and threats

Your lifelong servant, do not grant him

فمر الدّهر يا أمير البرايا

ينكفئ عن إساءتي ووعيدي

The masters fear the orders of servants

The lifelong habit does not defy you

عبدُك الدّهرُ لا تهبهُ أتخشى السّا

دةُ المالكون أمر العبيد

In a matter, having fulfilled pacts

If lifetime defied you one day

عهد الدهرُ لا يُخالف يوما

عنك أمرا وقد وفى العهود

The result of its defiance would not be proper

Trust the security and honor of your glorious reign

فلو الدهرُ عنك خالف يوما

لرأى الخلف منهُ غير سديد

With eternal remaining and everlasting immortality

ثق بأمن وعزّ ملك مُهنّا

بدوام البقا وطُول الخلود
