1. مالي عن مورد الهوى صدرُ

    يلحُّ منّي العذُولُ أو يذرُ

    My heart has no interest in the source of passion,

    Yet abandonment insists upon me or scattering.

  2. وكيف أسلو عن الهوى وله

    سيف على العاشقين مُشتهرُ

    How can I find solace from passion, when for it

    There is a notorious sword against lovers?

  3. أما عصت عُذّ إلي مطامعها

    في سلوتي عن هواهُ واقتصرُوا

    They disobeyed my advice to curb their greed

    Hoping for my solace from its love; they waited

  4. وأيقنوا أنّ في الملام لهم

    نقيض ما حاولوهُ وانتظرُوا

    And realized reprimanding them

    Contradicts what they sought, and they expected

  5. وأنّ أطماعهم وإن عظمت

    ليس لهم في بُرُوقها مطرُ

    That however great their greed,

    They have no share of its beams.

  6. حظّي من الوصل مثل حظّهمُ

    من سلوتي عن هواهُ مُفتقر

    My fortune of union equals their fortune

    Of my solace from its love, both deprived.

  7. لم يقض في وصله وتسليتي

    عن حُبّه لي ولا لهم وطر

    Neither its union nor my solace from its love

    Has been decreed for them or me.

  8. أما درى العاذلون عذلهمُ

    يُغري بي الحبُّ كلّما كثرُوا

    Don't the reproachers know their blame

    Makes love more tempting the more they increase?

  9. كأنّهم بالسّلوّ إن أمرُوا

    نهوا وفي الحبّ إن نهوا أمرُوا

    As if by dissuading me, they encourage,

    And if they prohibit love, they order it!

  10. مالي بطرق السّلوّ مخبرة

    لكن بطرق الغرام لي خبرُ

    I'm not versed in the ways of solace,

    Rather I'm expert in passion's ways.

  11. كأنّ مُرّ الغرام من شغفي

    شهد وشهدُ السّلوّ لي صبرُ

    It's as if the bitter passion in my fervor

    Is honey, and solace for me is remedy.

  12. إخالُ من شقوتي مُكدّره

    صفوا على أنّ صفوهُ كدرُ

    The troubles that mar its delight

    Are pure, though its purity is bitter.

  13. مالي من مذهب الهوى بدل

    كلا ولا عن حماهُ مُزدجرُ

    I have no substitute for passion's creed,

    No, I'm not deterred from protecting it!

  14. قُوى اصطباري عن الهوى ضعفت

    من لي بقلب عليه يصطبرُ

    My patience to abandon passion weakened,

    For who has a heart steadfast enough?

  15. ان رُمتُ سترالهوى أذاع به

    واش من الدّمع ليس يستترُ

    If I tried to hide passion, it would reveal itself,

    My streaming tears cannot conceal.

  16. لحبُ من في الفؤاد منزلهُ

    سُلطانُ قهر عليّ مُقتدرُ

    The love residing in my heart

    Is a conquering sultan, absolute in power.

  17. جُندُ هواهُ عليّ مُنتصر

    وجُندُ صبري عليه مُنكرُ

    Its troops are victorious over me

    While my patience troops surrender.

  18. إن يغفر الذّنب في هواهُ فما

    لديث ذنب السّلوّ مُغتفرُ

    If the sin of its love is forgiven, then the

    Reprehensible sin of solace is pardonable.

  19. لا أنتهي عن غرام من شهدت

    بالحسن فيه البادُون والحضرُ

    I cannot abandon passion for one whose beauty

    The sedentary and nomadic witnessed.

  20. ظبيٌ كحيلُ الجفوان فاترُها

    ما إن لليلي بسحرها سحرُ

    A gazelle whose languid eyelids,

    When the night charms, themselves have charm,

  21. نواعس للغرام مُوقظةٌ

    في مُقلتي من نُعاسها سهرُ

    Wakeful eyelids for passion

    Staying up when their drowsiness sleeps,

  22. إن أرسلت خلفهُ غدائرُهُ

    تُرسلُ من سُحب مُقلتي غُدُرُ

    If its tresses flow, they unleash

    From my eyelids' clouds a flood.

  23. في طُولها الشّعرُ طال والهفي

    ممّن به الشّعرُ طال والشّعرُ

    In its tallness, poetry grew long, and rapture

    In the one whose poetry and verse grew long.

  24. عُذّبتُ من ورد وجنتيه وما

    جنيت لكنّهُ جنى النّظرُ

    I suffered from its roses and gardens, yet

    I didn't harvest, only the sight harvested!

  25. بدت مُحيّاهُ روضة فجرى

    من ماء عيني لروضها نهرُ

    Its smile seemed a garden, so from my eyes

    Streamed to its garden a river.

  26. يُخجل شمس الضّحى أليس يُرى

    في وجهها كلّما بدت خفرُ

    Doesn't the morning sun feel shy? For in its face,

    Whenever it appears, there's a glow.

  27. من نظم دُرّ بفيه أشغلني

    بدرُ نظم من دُونه الدُّرر

    From composing pearls by its mouth I'm preoccupied,

    The full moons are poems apart from it.

  28. يا رامي الجمر في الحشا ودمي

    في الحبّ من سيف لحظه هدر

    O thrower of embers into the yard and my blood

    With the sword of its glance recklessly spilled,

  29. لاترم في مُهجتي الجمار ولي

    دمٌ به تركهنٌ ينجمرُ

    Do not throw embers at my insides, for my

    Blood has burning logs that keep it kindled!

  30. سهامُ جفنيه في الفؤاد لها

    ضربٌ بكسر الفؤاد يختبرُ

    Arrows of its eyes pierce my heart,

    A decisive blow shattering the heart.

  31. لم ينقسم في الهوى لغيرك بل

    مُباينٌ للسّلو ومُنكسرُ

    Passion for you has not been shared,

    Rather, defiant of solace and broken.

  32. يا قامة الغصن في الرّياض غدا

    طائر قلبي عليه ينهمرُ

    O form of a branch in the gardens, so my heart

    Became a bird pouring onto it!

  33. بكاسر الجفن صدت طائره

    من وكره فغدا للهوى وكر

    With its captivating glance, it drove its bird

    From its nest, so it returned to passion, nestless!

  34. جسمي أفنيتهُ والدُّموع فلا

    عين بجسمي باق ولا أثرُ

    I wasted my body until no

    Eye remains in my body, no trace.

  35. ضنّ زماني به عليّ كان

    عليه منّي بقله غيرُ

    Time betrayed me, though to it

    I was with little goodness, and it less.

  36. يُخلفُ وعدي به ويمطلني

    ويزدري بي لهُ ويحتقرُ

    It breaks its promise to me, delays me,

    Spurns me, and holds me in contempt.

  37. مالي ثوبٌ من الحظوظ به

    أحاط بين الورى وأتّزرُ

    I have no garment of good fortune to wrap

    Myself in, among all people.

  38. إن أنت يا دهرُ رُحت تمنعني

    حظّي من وصله وتنتهرُ

    O time, if you refuse me my share

    Of its union and chide me,

  39. فلا أبالي فإنّ حظّي من

    مُحمّد بن الأمير يُنتظرُ

    I do not care, for my fortune

    Lies in Muhammad ibn al-Amir awaited,

  40. المالكُ الكاملُ الّذي نُصبت

    لهُ على مفرق السّهى سُرُرُ

    The perfect king for whom thrones

    Were set up high among people,

  41. نجلُ مليك الملوك من ضعفت

    عمّا حوى الأوّلون والأخرُ

    Son of the King of Kings - when weakened,

    The former and the latter fell short of what he contained,

  42. من أشرقت في الورى شهامتهُ

    شمسا وليلُ الحُروب مُعتكرُ

    In valor his fearlessness shone like a sun,

    While the night of wars was pitch black,

  43. سيفٌ على المعتدين مُنصلتٌ

    سيلٌ إلى المعتفين مُنهمرُ

    A sword unleashed against transgressors,

    A flood released to the penitent,

  44. مُوفّقٌ بالإلاه مُعتضدٌ

    مُظفّرٌ في الحُروب مُنتصرُ

    Supported by God, given victory

    In wars, and triumphing,

  45. إذا انتضى البيض وارتدى سُمرا

    فالبيضُ ترتاعُ منهُ والسُمرُ

    When donning white then red, the white

    And red are terrified of him,

  46. من رام يُبدي الخلاف عنهُ فقد

    هانت عليه الحياةُ والعمر

    Whoever tries to defy him

    Has deemed life and age insignificant.

  47. ورُبّما خالفت لشقوتهم

    قومٌ بنعماء فضله بطرُوا

    Some may defy him out of their wretchedness

    Despite his superior virtues - they crossed the line!

  48. ما أثمرت دوحةُ الخلاف لهم

    وهل خلافٌ يُرى لهُ ثمرُ

    The seedling of defiance did not fruit for them.

    Does defiance bear fruit?

  49. لو خالفتهُ الجبال وافقهُ

    في قطعها صارٌم لهُ ذكر

    If mountains opposed him, a cutting blade

    Would match them in cutting them down,

  50. كأنّما دائما يُتابعهُ

    في ما يُريدُ القضاءُ والقدرُ

    As if destiny and fate constantly

    Follow what he wants.

  51. لو زُجر الدّهرُ عن إسائته

    بسطوة منهُ راح ينزجرُ

    If time were deterred from wronging him

    By his might, it would stop wronging him!

  52. هو المليك الذي عزائمه

    تشرق منها الكواكب الزهر

    He is the king whose resolves

    Make the stars rise radiantly,

  53. هُو المليكُ الّذي مفاخرُهُ

    على مُلوك الأنام تفتخرُ

    He is the king whose glories

    Make other kings' glories boast,

  54. ذُو همّة بالسّماك قد قُرنت

    ورُتبة كلّ دُونها البصرُ

    With an ambition reaching the heavens,

    And a rank below which all sights fall short.

  55. عدلُ الملوك الذي به اعتدلت

    أمزجهُ الدّهر وانتفى الخدرُ

    The justice of kings by which fate

    Is balanced, and affliction eliminated.

  56. آراؤُهُ في الأمور تعجزُ عن

    إدراكهنّ العقول والفكرُ

    His opinions on matters leave

    Minds and thoughts at a loss,

  57. إذا لها استنبطت قريحتهُ

    جاءت بعين الصّواب تنفجرُ

    When his talent deduces them,

    They manifestly hit the mark.

  58. لو أنّ سار بها استضاء دُجى

    ما شكّ في أنّ رأيهُ القمر

    If he followed them, the darkness’ gloom

    Would surely be illuminated, no doubt.

  59. إن يقفُ في الرأي مثل والده

    والعزم والحزم حين يبتدرُ

    If he matches his father in opinion, resolve,

    And decisiveness when catching opportunities,

  60. لا غرو إذ مُثمرُ الفروع به

    تُنبي عن طيب أصلها الشّجر

    No wonder, for the branches’ fruits

    Reveal the goodness of their origin, the tree.

  61. ملكٌ لهُ راحةٌ إذا انبسطت

    فزاخرُ البحر عندها جزر

    A king whose joy, when unfurled,

    Makes the sea, beside it, all islands,

  62. تبدوُ من كفّه وغُرّته

    يوم النّوال البدُورُ والبدُرُ

    From his palm and pride

    Appear, on the day of intimacy, full moons and crescents,

  63. إذا بدا وهو فوق سابحة

    ترى عُقابا من فوقه قمرُ

    When prominent atop his steed, you’d see

    An eagle above it, and it a moon!

  64. لهُ معاني الاداب قد كشفت

    محاسنها عن سواهُ تختمرُ

    He possesses literary arts unveiled,

    Surpassing all others in their hidden beauty.

  65. نثرُهُ يفضحُ النّجوم سنى

    والدُّرُّ من نظمه لهُ بهرُ

    His prose puts the stars to shame ingenuity,

    His verse makes pearls appear dull.

  66. لا غرو إن خطّ مُهرقا فغدت

    فرائدُ الدُّرّ منهُ تنتثرُ

    No wonder if he writes illuminated works

    Whose masterpieces spill pearls.

  67. فإنّما الكف منهُ بحرُ ندى

    ومن سوى البحر لاتُرى الدُّررُ

    For his palm is an ocean of light,

    And none but the ocean has pearls.

  68. بني علىّ أمست مآثرُكم

    إن تُحص تُحص الرّمالُ والمدر

    You built glories upon glories until,

    If counted, they equal sand and pebbles.

  69. ما كلُّ فخر علا ومنقبة

    إلا غدا في عُلاك ينحصرُ

    Not every honor ascended, nor merit,

    Except it belongs under your ascension.

  70. مآثرُ منك ما سُبقت بها

    بل أنت باد لها ومُبتكرُ

    Your glories - none preceded them,

    No, you initiated them, innovated them.

  71. تهنا بالخلعة الّتي نُشرت

    عليك والخلقُ لها حولها نُشروا

    You were honored with the robe unfurled

    Over you, and all people unfurled around it,

  72. طوق تطوّقت من عُلا ملك

    دانت إليه الأملاكُ والبشرُ

    A necklace you wore from the height of your rule’s mastery,

    To which kingdoms and mortals submitted.

  73. من آل عُثمان من لهم دُول

    أيّامُكم في جباهها غُررُ

    From the House of Osman whose days

    Have, on its forehead, brilliant stars.

  74. فابشر وفُز أيّها المليكُ بها

    خلعة عهد عليك تنتشرُ

    So rejoice and win, O King, with it -

    The robe of the era spread over you,

  75. وانعم بعيد أتاك في فرح

    سُرُورُهُ في حماك مُعتمرُ

    And delight in the Eid that came to you in joy

    Whose happiness dwells among your pillars.

  76. بعيد فطر فطرت فيه على

    عهد مدى الدّهر ليس ينفطرُ

    The Eid of Fitr in which you excelled,

    To an era of eternity, unbroken,

  77. واسعد بدار حللت ساحتها

    بها لك السّعدُ دام والعمرُ

    And be merry in the abode you settled,

    In which good fortune - lasting - and life reside for you.

  78. فهاك منّي قصيدة شرُفت

    تغرُ منها القصائدُ الغررُ

    So accept from me a poem ennobled,

    Next to which poems pale, however brilliant.

  79. فريدةُ الحسن ما لها ثمن

    بمثلها لا يجيءُ مُتّجرُ

    Unique in beauty, peerless in worth,

    None can trade with its equal.

  80. إن طال مدحي لكم فلا عجبٌ

    مُطوّل المدح فيك مُختصرُ

    If my praise of you is long, no wonder,

    For condensed praise of you is prolonged.

  81. سواكمُ بالمديح مُفتخرٌ

    والمدحُ يسمو بكم ويفتخرُ

    Except you, none boast my praise,

    And praise rises with you, and boasts.

  82. زففتها بعد عقدها لك من

    بُيوت فكري ترجُو وتنتظرُ

    I presented it to you, after composing it

    From my mind’s abodes hoping and awaiting,

  83. تطلبُ الاشهاد من عُلاك وهل

    عقدٌ بغير الإشهاد يُعتبرُ

    Seeking your endorsement - and can

    A composition be considered without endorsement?

  84. لا زال أوج العلى بطلعتكم

    تأويه شمسُ السعود والقمر

    May the heights of ascension remain for your rising,

    Sheltering the sun of prosperity and the moon!
