1. ألا هل أرى ختما لمختصر الجسم

    بسقم جُفون أطنبت في الهوى سقمى

    Alas! Do I see an end to this frail body

    With the sickness of eyelids that lingered in passion's disease?

  2. وهل من خليل مُسعد الطّرف في

    الدُّجى على أدمُع تهمي ومُرتقب النّجم

    Is there a beloved friend with happy gaze in

    The darkness, on my flowing tears and awaited star?

  3. أيا مالكي ما لي سوى الدّمع شافعي

    لديك كعنمان على وجنتي يدمي

    O my Master, I have none but tears to intercede

    For me with you, like knots on my cheeks they shed blood.

  4. يُسالمُ قلبي منك لحظا مُحاربا

    فهل فيه يوما يبدلُ الحرب بالسّلم

    Does my heart make peace with you for a moment, then fight?

    Will it change from war to peace one day?

  5. ويبدلُ منك السّخط عندي بالرّضا

    وأحظى على أنف العواذل بالرّغم

    And change your displeasure with me to pleasure,

    And gain despite the proud beauties' scorn?

  6. ولو زُرت في ليل التّمام مُتمّما

    لوعدي لخلتُ البدر قد زار في التّمّ

    If I visited in the night of perfection, fulfilling

    My promise, I would find the moon had come to visit in the darkness,

  7. وإلا سنى أنوار ختم بدرس من

    تناهت له العلياءُ في الفضل والعلم

    Unless the lights of a seal were adorned by one

    Whose nobility in virtue and knowledge was unsurpassed,

  8. هُمامٌ إلى غريانُ يُعزى وإنّه

    لفي كلّ علم تاجُ أعلاقه الشّمّ

    A protector, to whom the eminent in lineage turn

    For he is the crown of every sublime science,

  9. إذا أطرؤوا بالمدح في وصف عالم

    وقيس به الممدُوحُ يعزُّ طالبُ الذّمّ

    When they boast in praising a scholar

    And he is compared to the praised, the slanderer feels shame.

  10. فقيرٌ من الدُّنيا غنيّ من العلى

    مليء من التّقوى عريٌّ من الإثم

    Poor in worldly wealth, rich in the Most High,

    Full of piety, empty of sin.

  11. متى كسلت عن خدمة العلم صُحبةٌ

    فخدمتهُ للعلم بالجدّ والحزم

    Whenever a group grew lazy in serving knowledge,

    He served it with dedication and resolve.

  12. ترى لعويص المشكلات بأسرها

    على ذهنه الأسنى ازدحاما لدى الفهم

    You see that the most stubborn problems, altogether,

    Crowd his noble mind, seeking understanding,

  13. إذا جال في ميزان فقه فأشهبٌ

    يُسابقُ في إدراكه شُهبُ الدّهم

    If he discusses legal theory, he is a flame

    Racing in comprehension with the shooting stars.

  14. ويُوردُ في علم الكلام أدلّة

    يقينيّة البرهان قاطعة الخصم

    And he presents in scholastic theology proofs

    With demonstrative, decisive argument.

  15. وتُجزم أعلامُ النّحاة برفعه

    فأضحى بعلم النحو يرفعُ الجزم

    The standards of grammar affirm his syntax,

    So he became through grammatical knowledge the source of grammar.

  16. وتشهدُ أربابُ البيان بأنّه

    لها سيّدُ مولى مُطاعٌ بلادُهم

    And masters of rhetoric witness that he

    Is the lord and master whom their lands obey.

  17. غدا وهو في الميزان قطب أما ترى

    لهُ فيه تهذيب يُقرّرُ بالختم

    Tomorrow, while he holds the scales, he is the pole. Do you not see

    He has in it a refinement verified by the seal?

  18. وإن فسّر التّنزيل يوما فذهنه

    بإتّقانه كشّاف صادقٌ عن وهم

    If he interprets Scripture one day, his mind

    Clarifies it sincerely, dispelling confusion.

  19. غدا في أُصول الفقه ينسخُ ذكرهُ

    لذكر الأُصوليين بالحتم والرّسم

    Tomorrow in the principles of jurisprudence, his mention

    Replaces that of the experts in principle and method.

  20. وأمّا حديث المصطفى صحّ حفظهُ

    له وألمّ بالرواية والإسم

    As for the hadith of the Chosen One, his memorization of it is sound,

    He has mastered the transmission and the names.

  21. عليه صلاةُ الله ما ذُكر اسمهُ

    على ألسن المدّاح في البدء والختم

    The prayer of God be upon him whenever his name

    Is mentioned by praisers at the start and end.
