قلت ومزن السما ينهل من سُحب

وراح سيلهُ فينا دائماً جار

I said, and the rain of the sky flows down from clouds,

And its torrent within us is ever streaming.

أيا سماء على البلدان هامية

إلا على بلد يابس أشجار

O sky raining over the countries!

Except on a land with dry trees.

مالكُ بلتُ على أرض صفاقس ما

من السّحاب كرشّ الطّل للسّاري

What is wrong with you that you do not rain

On the land of Sfax even a drizzle for the sower?

قالت أراها من القوم الّذين هُمُ

قد قال بيتين فيهم شاعرُ الدار

It said: I see it belongs to a people

Of whom the poet of the house said two verses.

قومٌ إذا استنبح الأضياف كلبهمُ

قالوا لأمّهمُ بُولي على النّار

A people, if their guest's dog barks

They say to their mother: Pee on the fire!

فتمسك البول بُخلا أن تجود به

ولا تبول لهم إلا بمقدار

So she holds back urine, stingy to give it,

And does not pee for them but a little.
