أَتانا بِخُبزٍ لَهُ حامِضٍ
شَبيهِ الدَراهِمِ في حِليَتِه
He brought us bread so sour
Like coins in its ruggedness
يُضَرِّسُ آكِلَهُ طَعمُهُ
وَيَنشَبُ في الحَلقِ مِن خُشنَتِهَ
Its taste makes the eater grimace
And sticks in the throat with its coarseness
إِذا ما تَنَفَّستَ عِندَ الخِوانِ
تَطايَرَ في البَيتِ مِن خِفَّتِه
If you breathe near the loaf
It floats in the house, so light
فَنَحنُ جُلوسٌ مَعاً كُلُّنا
نُداري التَنَفُّسَ مِن خَشيَتِه
So we all sit together
Avoiding breaths in our fright
