I do not see, if I slaughter Sa‘id’s ewe,
anything coming into my hands but the hide.
She is nothing but bones; if you saw her,
you would say, “These are arzan-wood sticks in a sack!”
One of those wretched sheep which, whenever
people see them, are called “plundered sheep.”
You will see how they spit in the face
of the one who sacrifices them, on the Day of Reckoning.
How often she sang before them, when she was not
fed, and grazed on nothing but sheer dust:
“My Lord, I have no patience for this torment;
it has worn away my soul and withered my youth.”
