يوم كأن سماءه

مثل الحصان الأبرش

A day whose sky

Was like a spotted horse,

وكان زهرة أرضه

فرشت بأحسن مفرش

And the blossom of its land

Was spread out on the finest carpet.

والشمس تظهر مرة

وتغيب كالمستوحش

The sun appears once

And disappears like a frightened animal.

فسماؤه دكن الخزوز

وأرضه خضر الوشي

So its sky became covered in veils,

And its land turned green.

شبهت حمرة وجهها

بحمار عين المنتشي

I likened the redness of her face

To a donkey's eyes when yawning.
