Many a crippled man in a company has walked, thanks to our wine;
and a blind man—we gave him three draughts, and he regained his sight.
A wine whose scent is like that of rose-red ambergris,
and like richly fragrant Indian musk ground to powder;
one of the radiant maidens from the land of Babylon.
Whenever the vintner pours her into the cup, he cries, “Allāhu akbar!”
She has a wondrous neck of Syrian glass,
on which a craftsman lavished his art, then stood amazed.
She is among Pharaoh’s treasures, amassed for him—
and everyone calls her “the ancient,” famed far and wide.
Whenever he sees her, spotless after washing,
circling among us, the fasting man of the company breaks his fast.
