1. يا رَبْعَ ناجِيَةَ انْهَلَّتْ بكَ السُّحُبُ

    أمَا تَرَى كيفَ نابَتْ دُوْنَكَ النُّوَبُ

    O quarter of Najiya, clouds poured down upon you

    Don’t you see how hardships have afflicted you

  2. وعاد قلبيَ مِنْ ذكراهُ عيدُ جوىً

    هو الخيالُ وإنْ قالوا هُوَ الطَّرَب

    And my heart regained its joy from the memory of her

    It’s my imagination, though they say it’s infatuation

  3. أبَعْدَ حَوْلٍ تَقَضَّى لِلنَّوى كَثَبٍ

    ولا الذي بيننا نَبْعٌ ولا غَرَب

    After some time, yearning found its way to my self

    Neither is there a spring nor a dusk between us

  4. أرْتَابُ بالشيء مما كنتُ أذكره

    يا دهرُ إنَّ أحاديثَ المُنَى رِيَبُ

    I doubt the things I used to recall

    O fate, the talks of demise are doubtful

  5. مما يُبَرِّحُ بي حتَّى أبوحَ به

    وإنْ أحاطتْ بيَ الأوْصَادُ والرُّقُب

    Things that keep me awake at night to confess them

    Even if shackles and chains surround me

  6. ذكرى إذا نزعت قلبي شياطنها

    فانظر إلى اصل دائي كيف ينسعب

    The memory of her takes away the devils of my heart

    So look at the origin of my sickness, see how it flows

  7. وَلي حبيبٌ وإنْ شَطَّ المَزَارُ به

    بَيْني وبَيْنَ الرَّدى في حُبّهِ سَبَب

    I have a lover, though fate keeps him away from me

    Between me and misery, his love is the cause

  8. وسنانُ يَكْسِرُ جَفْنَيْهِ على حَوَرٍ

    فيه الصَّبَابةِ جدٌّ والهوى لَعِبُ

    His teeth break his eyelids over cheeks

    In them chastity, passion and play

  9. تَزَوَّدَتْ منهُ عَيْني نظْرَة عَرَضَا

    أصْبَحْتُ وهي بقلبي لَوْطَةٌ عَجَب

    My eyes got a fleeting glance of him

    I woke up while it was a shocking amazement in my heart

  10. قالوا الهوى عِيْشةٌ ضَنْكٌ فقلت لهم

    لا خيرَ في دَعَةٍ لم يَجْنِها تَعَب

    They said love is a life of misery, I said to them

    There is no good in tranquility that hardship didn’t refine

  11. والخمرُ لولا حُمَيَّاها وَسَوْرُتها

    لم تُغْرَسِ الكرمُ أو لمْ تعْصَرِ العِنَب

    And wine, without its forbiddenness and tipsiness

    Vines wouldn’t have grown nor grapes pressed

  12. يا دولةَ الوَصْلِ هل لي فيكِ منْ أمَلٍ

    هيهاتِ ليس لشيءٍ فاتَ مُطَّلَب

    O state of connection, do I have any hopes in you

    Alas! There are no demands for something gone

  13. كانتْ يدَ الدهرِ عندي فاستبدَّ بها

    ما أعْلَمَ الدهرَ باسْتِرْجاعِ ما يَهَب

    Fate’s hand was in mine then took it away

    I don’t think fate knows how to regain what it gives

  14. كم ليلةٍ بِتُّهَا أجْدُو غياهِبَها

    ببدرِهَا التِمِّ لا مَيْنٌ ولا كَذِب

    How many nights I stayed up longing for their brightness

    With their full moon, no fatigue and no lies

  15. يُعِلّني كلَّما مالَ العِناقُ به

    كأساً من الرِيِّ ما في ثَغْرِه حبب

    Whenever the snuggle inclined towards him

    It makes me drink a cup of wine without bubbles

  16. هَبَّتْ تُعاتِبُني زَهْرٌ وقد عَلِمَتْ

    أن العتابَ شجىً في القلب أو شجب

    She got mad at me, and she knew

    That blame is agony in the heart or burns

  17. قالتْ قعدتَ وقامَ الناسُ كُلُّهُمُ

    ألا يُعلِّلكَ الأثراءُ والرُّتب

    She said you sat while all people stood up

    Don’t dignitaries and positions make you justify?

  18. فقلتُ كُفّي فما تُغْني مُقارعتي

    في أزْمَةٍ ضاعَ في أثْنائِها الأدب

    I said enough, arguing with me is no use

    In a crisis where manners are lost

  19. فاستضحكتْ ثم قالت أنت في سَعةٍ

    من أن تُسيمَ وهذا الماءُ والعُشب

    So she laughed and then said you live in luxury

    That you disregard this water and grass

  20. أما رأيت ندى حَوَّاء كيف دنا

    بالغيثِ إذ كادَ يأتي دونه العطب

    Didn’t you see how the mist of Hawwa approached

    With rain when drought was about to afflict it

  21. دنيا ولا ترفٌ دينٌ ولا قشفٌ

    ملك ولا سرف دركٌ ولا طلب

    Worldly life without luxury, religion without asceticism

    Kingdom without extravagance, enough without seeking

  22. بِرٌّ ولا سقمٌ عيشٌ ولا هرَمٌ

    جِدٌّ ولا نصبٌ وِرْدٌ ولا قربُ

    Righteousness without illness, life without senility

    Seriousness without tiredness, roses without nearness

  23. رِدْ غَمْرَة ترتمي من كلٍّ ناحيةٍ

    عُبابُهَا الفضَةُ البيضاءُ والذهب

    Sweep away the clouds coming from every direction

    Their drizzles are white silver and gold

  24. مَليكةٌ لا يُوازِي قَدرَها مَلِكٌ

    كالشّمْسِ تَصغُر عن مِقْدارِها الشُّهُب

    An angel no king can equate

    Like the sun, stars seem trivial to her

  25. وَهَضْبَةٌ طالما لاذُوا بجانبها

    فما لهمْ لم يقولوا مَعْقِلٌ أشِبُ

    And a highland where many sought refuge beside

    Why didn’t they say it’s an impregnable refuge?

  26. أنثى سما باسْمِها النادي وكم ذكرٍ

    يُدْعَى كأنَّ اسْمَهُ من لؤمه لقب

    A female whose name adorns the club and how many

    Males are named as if their names are nicknames from her gems

  27. وقلَّما نقصَ التأنيثُ صاحبَهُ

    إذا تُذُكّرِتَ الأفعالَ والنُّصُب

    Rarely does femininity decrease the merit of its companion

    When you consider deeds and syntax

  28. والحيَّةُ الصِلُّ أدهى كلما انبعثت

    من أنْ تمارسها الأرْمَاح والقضب

    The creeping snake - its venom intensifies whenever it crawls out

    From being pierced by spears and rods

  29. وهذه الكعبةُ استولتْ على شَرَفٍ

    فَذُبْذِبَتْ دونها الأوثانُ والصُّلُب

    And this Kaaba has taken over an honorable position

    So statues and crosses wavered below it

  30. يَنْميكِ كلُّ بعيدِ الشأوِ فائِتُهُ

    له البسالةُ أمٌّ والسمَّاحُ أب

    Everyone far of glorious lineage, his family

    Bravery is the mother, and leniency is the father

  31. منْ كلِّ مُنْصَلِتٍ يَسْعَى بِمُنْصَلتٍ

    والموتُ بينهما يَنْدَى ويلتهب

    From every harbor one hastens towards a harbor

    While death kindles and burns between them

  32. إذا رَضُوْا فارْجُهُم في كلِّ نائبةٍ

    وكنْ على حَذَرٍ منهمْ إذا غضبوا

    When they accept, entrust them with every calamity

    And be cautious of them when they get angry

  33. إذا دَعَوْا قامتِ الهيجا على قَدَمٍ

    كأنما تنتمي فيهمْ وَتَنْتَسِب

    When they call to arms, wars rise on the feet

    As if wars emanate from them and affiliate with them

  34. هُمْ ثَبَّتوا الدينَ إذْ ضاقتْ مَذَاهِبُهُ

    بأنْفُسٍ صِيغَ منها الدينُ والحسب

    They established the religion when its ways narrowed

    With selves from which religion and nobility were molded

  35. أيامَ جبريلُ داعيهم إذا نزلوا

    وَعِزِرائيلُ راعيهم إذا ركبوا

    The days when Gabriel was their caller as they descended

    And Azraeel was their herder as they rode

  36. حتى استقرَّ الهُدى في عُقْرِ دارِهِمُ

    وأيْقَنَ العُجْمُ أنَّ القادةَ العربُ

    Until guidance settled in the depths of their houses

    And non-Arabs were certain the leaders are Arabs

  37. همْ أورثوك العلا واستخلفوك على

    آياتها وحذا الأعقابُ والعقِبُ

    They bequeathed you knowledge and made you successors over

    Its verses, while eras and descendants elapsed

  38. أَهلْلَتُ بالحُرّةِ العُلْيا إلى أملٍ

    لمثلِهِ كانت الأشعارُ تنتخب

    I aspired to the highest freedom towards a hope

    To the like of which poems would be chosen

  39. وشمتُ بَرْقَ نداها طَيَّ سَوْرَتِها

    فاقتادني رَغَبٌ واعتادني رَهَب

    I glimpsed the lightening of her image, I roamed around her tipsiness

    Then desire led me and habit accustomed me

  40. والمرءُ ليس له نفعٌ ولا ضررٌ

    كالنّارِ ليس لها ضَوْءٌ ولا لَهَب

    One brings no benefit nor harm

    Like fire brings no light or flames

  41. بَنَى لكِ ابنُ عليٍّ بيتَ مَكْرُمَةٍ

    الله العوالي عمادٌ والظُّبَا طُنُب

    The son of Ali built you, O Karbala, a house of honor

    God’s loftiest - its pillars are palms and trunks

  42. وَلاَّكِ أبهج فخرٍ تفخرينَ به

    إذا انْتدَى للفخارِ السَّادَةُ النجب

    He beautified you with the pride by which you pride

    When the chiefs of nobility and glorified ones intend to visit

  43. يا أختَ خيرِ مُلوكِ الأرضِ قاطبةً

    وإن أعدّوا وإن أسموا وإن نسبوا

    My sister of the best of all kings

    Even if they counted, named and attributed

  44. محمّدٌ وأبو بكرٍ وخيرهم

    يَحْيى وحَسْبُكِ عِزّاً كلَّما حُسبوا

    Muhammed, Abu Bakr and the best amongst them

    Yahya, and for you, it’s enough of honor whenever they are considered

  45. ثلاثةٌ هُمْ مُرَادُ النَّاسِ كُلّهِمُ

    كالدَّهرِ ماضٍ وموجودٌ وَمُرْتَقَبُ

    They are the aim of all people

    Like time – past, present and anticipated

  46. حوّاءُ يا خيرَ من يَسْعَى على قَدَمٍ

    ولستُ عَبْدَكِ إنْ لم أقْضِ ما يجب

    My mistress Hawwa, the best of whoever walks on feet

    And I am not your slave if I don’t fulfill what I owe

  47. إليكِ أهديتُ مما حاكه خَلَدي

    فَخْراً يَجِدُّ وتبلى هذه الحِقَب

    To you I present what my eternity composed

    Pride that is serious and eras will wear out

  48. وافتك سودُ خطوطٍ كلما احتضرت

    ألْقَتْ مقالدَها الأشعارُ والخطب

    And rid yourself of the darkness of lines whenever they weaken

    Poems and sermons cast their reins

  49. قد عمَّ برُّكِ أهلَ الأرضِ قاطبةً

    فكيف أخْرِج عَنه جارُكِ الجُنُبُ

    Your righteousness has reached all people on earth

    So how can I exclude your neighbor, the non-Arab?
