1. تَناصُرُ الشيبِ في فَوْدَيْهِ خِذْلانُ

    إنَّ الزيادةَ في النُّقْصان نُقْصانُ

    Old age betrays in its decline,

    Increase in decrease is but decline,

  2. لا تغْتَررْ بعيونٍ ينظرونَ بها

    فإنما هيَ أحداقٌ وأجفانٌ

    Be not deceived by eyes that see,

    They're only eyelids and pupils vain,

  3. كمْ مُقْلَةٍ ذهبتْ في الغيِّ مذهبها

    بنظرةٍ هي شانٌ أو لها شان

    How many glances went astray,

    By a look, a mere look of disdain,

  4. رهْنٌ بأضغاثِ أحلامٍ إذا هجعت

    وربَّما حَلِمَتْ والمرءُ يقظان

    My dreams when I sleep hold me hostage,

    And maybe I dream while awake and sane,

  5. فانظرْ بعقلكَ إن العينَ كاذبةٌ

    واسمعْ بِحسّكَ إن السمعَ خوَّان

    Look with your mind, for eyes do lie,

    And hear with your senses, hearing is profane,

  6. ولا تقُلْ كل ذي عينٍ له نَظرٌ

    إن الرعاةَ تَرَى ما لا يرى الضان

    Say not all with eyes have sight,

    Shepherds see what seers don't attain,

  7. دع الغنى لرجالٍ ينْصَبُونَ له

    إنَّ الغِنَى لفضولِ الهمِّ مَيْدان

    Leave wealth to men who strive for it,

    Wealth is but excess of vain toil and pain,

  8. واخلعْ لَبُوسَكَ من شحٍّ ومن أملٍ

    لا يقطعُ السيفُ إلا وهو عريان

    Cast off your shoes of miserliness and hope,

    No sword cuts unless it be naked and plain,

  9. وصاحبٍ لم أزلْ منه على خَطَرٍ

    كأنَّني علمُ غيبٍ وهو حَسَّان

    A friend I feared would betray me,

    As if I knew the unseen and he divined,

  10. أغراهُ حظٌّ توَخّاه وأخطأني

    أما درَى أن بعض الرِّزقِ حِرْمان

    Chance allured him to ambition,

    Knows he not that rizq has destain?

  11. وَغَرَّه أنْ رآه قد تَقَدَّمَني

    كما تَقَدَّمَ بسم الله عُنْوانُ

    He was deceived to see himself ahead,

    As "In the name of God" titles prestige and fame,

  12. إني استجرتُ على ريبِ الزمان فتًى

    إلا يكنْ ليثَ غابٍ فهو إنسان

    I hired a lad to face fate's caprice,

    No lion of the jungle, but a man humane,

  13. حسبي بِعُلْيَا عليٍّ معقلٌ أشِبٌ

    زمانُ سَيْري به في الأرض أزمان

    My refuge is Ali's lofty principles,

    Eras will pass with them on earth's terrain,

  14. صعبُ المراقي ولكنْ ربما سَهُلَتْ

    على المُنى منه أوْطارٌ وأوطان

    The path is harsh but may be smoothed,

    By wishes from it or homelands regained,

  15. الواهبُ الخيلَ عِقْباناً مُسَوَّمَةً

    لو سُوِّمتْ قبلها في الجوِّ عقبان

    The Giver gave steeds named already,

    As if named in the air before they had reign,

  16. من كلِّ ساع أمامَ الريح يَقْدُمُها

    منهُ مهاةٌ وإن شاءتْ فسرحان

    Each moment to the wind they surpass,

    Among them are gift and free spirit unchained,

  17. دُجُنَّةٌ تصفُ الأنوارَ غُرَّتُها

    وَنَبْعَةٌ يَدَّعي أعْطَافَها البانُ

    Colts prancing in their stylish gait,

    And spirited ones their long necks arraigned,

  18. عصا جَذِيمةَ إلا ما أُتيح لها

    من أمرِ موسى فجاءَتْ وَهْيَ ثعبان

    Moses' rod but what was allowed it,

    So it came as serpent with magic insane,

  19. هيمٌ رواءٌ لو أن الماءَ صافحَها

    لزالَ أو زلَّ عنها وهو ظمآن

    Yearning wells whose water if touched,

    Would shake or slip from it while thirst remained,

  20. يَكادُ يَخْلَقُ مُهْرَاقُ الدماءِ بها

    فلا تَقُلْ هي أنْصَابٌ وأوثان

    Their bleeding nearly creates corpses,

    Say not these are idols or gods proclaimed,

  21. مَوْتَى فإن قَلِقَتْ أجفانُها علمتْ

    أنَّ الدروعَ على الأبطالِ أكفانُ

    Dead until their eyelids tremble, then you know,

    Armors on warriors are but bloody shrouds lain,

  22. نفسي فداؤكَ لا كفؤاً ولا ثمناً

    ولو غدا المُشْتَري منها وكيوان

    My soul is yours, not equal nor a price,

    Though the buyer tomorrow be monster or djinn,

  23. والتبرُ قد وَزَنُوه بالحديدِ فما

    ساوَى ولكن مقاديرٌ وأوزان

    They weighed iron against evasion, but

    It didn't match, only measures and weights ascertained,
