كيفَ السبيلُ إلى

صبري وفي المعالم أشجانُ

How can I be patient when there are so many sorrows

And the caravan amidst the expanse with the delicate anklets has appeared

والركبُ وَسْطَ الفَلا

بالخرَّد النواعم قد بانوا

They came on the day of fever

In their white garbs

أقبلنَ يومَ الحمَى

في سُنْدُسيَّات الحُلَلْ

The white of tear-stained eyes

And the black of branches and eyelashes

بيضُ مَطَلِّ الدما

سودُ الفروعِ والمقل

So O meaning, with what

If attained, hope would be attained

فيا مُعنَّىً بما

لو ناله نالَ الأملْ

Without the adorned ladies

For the sword, deprivation of blades

دونَ ذوات الحُلى

للسيفِ بالصوارم حرمانُ

Seek salvation, and do not

Be fooled by the alluring gazelles

ابغِ النجاةَ ولا

يغرركَ بالضراغم غِزلانُ

He knew nothing but

Tormenting his passion

لم يدرِ شيئاً سوى

تعذيبه لِصَبّه

And I did not complain of love

Fearing his reproach

وما شكوتُ الهوى

إليه خوفَ عتبه

And before intention

I kept his love secret

وكنتُ قبلَ النوى

مكتتماً لحبه

So when they departed

My eyes overflowed with pouring tears

فعندما رحلا

فاضت بدمع ساجم أجفانُ

They disclosed my secret

Can the wretched conceal?

أطلعنَ منّي على

سرِّي وهل للهائم كتمان

Bring me happiness

An ocean overflowing with favors

أهدي إليَّ السرورْ

بحرٌ يفيضُ بالمنن

If times make war on me

He is my sword and shield

إن حاربتني الدهورْ

فهو حُسامي والمِجَنْ

So say to every proud one

Like my father Ya'qub, be

فقلْ لكلِّ فخور

مثلَ أبي يعقوبَ كُنْ

The one who perfected

While the whole world is imperfect

ذاك الذي كملا

وفي جميع العالم نُقْصانُ

And long administered justice

And opposed oppressive times

وطالما عَدَلا

وللزمان الظالم عدوان

Whose help cannot be attained

Even if followed by stars

ذو سؤددٍ لا ينال

لو تَبعَتْهُ الأنجمْ

When you mention war

He is the bold leader

إذا ذكرتَ النزالْ

فهو الجرىءُ المقدمْ

And if you seek bounty

He is the generous bestower

وإن طلبتَ النَّوال

فهو الجوادُ المُنْعِمْ

By God, since they spent

No scale remains for the spender

تاللهِ مُذْ بَذَلا

ما قام للقائم ميزان

Cite him as the example

Hatim's generosity is pretense

اضربْ به المثَلا

فإنَّ جود حاتم بُهْتان

And one intending to travel

None but me did he consult

ومزمعٍ للسفرِ

لم يرضَ غيري مُسْتشارْ

Saying, "Do you know my travel?"

They are seafarers

فقال تدري سَفري

هُمُ على البحرِ بِحَار

I said, "The secret is

With me, you'll find it summarized

فقلتُ سرُّ الخبرِ

عندي تجدْهُ باختصارْ

If you come to a country of peace

And are met by noble youths

إن جيت أرض سلا

وافاكَ بالمكارم فتيانُ

They are lines of elevation

And Yusuf ibn al-Qasim the title"
