1. أهلِّي بالبكاءِ وبالنحيب

    فقد نَزَحَ المحبُّ عن الحبيب

    Greet me with tears and lamentation,

    For the lover has departed from the beloved.

  2. وقد وَسِعَ الحوادثَ يومُ رزء

    تضيقُ له الصدورُ عن القلوب

    The day of misfortune has expanded,

    And the hearts have become too narrow for it.

  3. وآذَنَتِ المكارمُ والمعالي

    بِخَطْبٍ عاثَ حتى في الخطوب

    Virtues and glories have announced

    Calamities that have spread even to engagements.

  4. أيا لهفَ العَلاءِ على حَصَانٍ

    مُبَرَّأَةِ العيونِ من العيوب

    Oh, the ardent yearning of the noble ones for a steed

    With eyes absolved of defects.

  5. ربيبةُ عزةٍ قعساءَ نابَتْ

    منابَ الشمسِ إلا في الغُروب

    The darling of honor, straight and tall,

    Rose like the sun except at sunset.

  6. ونشأةُ نِعْمَةٍ خضراءَ رَفّتْ

    رَفيفَ الغُصْنِ مالَ مع الجَنُوب

    And the upbringing of lush blessings waved

    Like the rustle of a branch leaning with the south wind.

  7. ولم أرَ مثلَ مَنْعَاها مُصَاباً

    هَفَا بقلوبِ شُبَّانٍ وشيب

    I have not seen the like of her misfortune,

    Which has confounded the hearts of youth and old age alike.

  8. لئنْ نَفَضُوا الأناملَ مِنْ ثَرَاهَا

    لقد مَلَؤوهُ منْ حُسْنٍ وطيب

    If they have let go of her reins,

    They have filled it with goodness and benevolence.

  9. وقد تركوا به إحدى الغَوَادي

    فحدِّثْ عن ضريحٍ أو قليب

    And they have left her in one of the valleys,

    So speak of a tomb or a small enclosure.

  10. إذا هَبَّتْ به ريحٌ شَجَاها

    به ألاَّ سبيلَ إلى العبوب

    When the winds blow towards it,

    It has no access to return.

  11. وما خَلَصَتْ إليه الريحُ إلا

    مغالطةً على أمَلٍ كذوب

    The winds have reached her only

    As a deception upon false hopes.

  12. أقولُ وقد نعاها ناعياها

    وأشْبُلُها بمنهلٍ سكوب

    I say as her elegists have elegized her,

    And I yearn for her at a blocked watering place:

  13. ألم يرِبِ الرَّدى تضييعُ سرٍّ

    تَبَلدُ فيه أوهامُ الغيوب

    Does Time not lose a secret,

    In which even the perceptions of the hidden go astray?

  14. وكيف سَمَا الزمانُ إلى مَحَلٍّ

    يَضِلُّ الطيفُ فيه عن الدَّبيب

    And how has Time risen to a position,

    Where ghosts stray from pathfinders?

  15. تخطى نحوه حُمْرَ المنايا

    يندبُّ إليه في سُوْدِ الحروب

    The red of death galloped towards it,

    Lamenting it amidst the gloom of wars.

  16. وكلَّ مُجَرَّبٍ ذَرِبٍ تَحلَّى

    بِوَسْمٍ لا يُضافُ إلى ضريب

    And every experienced, fleeing person has adorned himself

    With a brand not to be added to tax.

  17. ترى الموتَ الزؤام يَجُولُ فيه

    مجالَ السّحْرِ في اللحظ المُريب

    You see death, gloomy, wandering in it,

    Like the glance of sorcery in a dreadful moment.

  18. تَحُشُّ به المنيةُ كلَّ قَرْمٍ

    نجيبٍ فوق مُنْجَرِدٍ نجيب

    Death plants every noble, lofty trunk

    Upon a slender, delicate trunk.

  19. وكلَّ أصمَّ أخرسَ عَلَّمَتْهُ

    صروفُ الدهر تشتيتَ الشُّعوب

    And it has taught every deaf mute

    The ways of fate that scatter people.

  20. إذا ما اهتزَّ في يُمْنى كميٍّ

    رأيت الموتَ يخطرُ في قضيب

    Whenever the standard wavered in his right hand,

    I saw death looming in the rod.

  21. لتبكِ المكرماتُ وإن عَدَتْها

    عوادٍ من عَذولٍ أو رقيب

    The generous will cry over her, even if she counted them

    As visitors of neglect or watchfulness.

  22. على أُمِّ اليتامَى والأيامَى

    إذا نَبَتِ المواضع بالجُنُوب

    Over the mother of orphans and widows,

    When the places grow green with vegetation.

  23. تَخَلَّصها الرَّدى مِن خِدْرِ ليثٍ

    تُدَاريه الأسودُ عنِ الوثوب

    Fate has freed her from the den of a lion,

    While the lions stay away from pouncing.

  24. غدا منها بِوِجْدانٍ بعيدٍ

    على عهدٍ بلُقْيَاها قريب

    Tomorrow, with distant separation,

    Not like her recent company.

  25. يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ بالغيبِ عنها

    بِظَنٍّ مخطىءٍ وضَنىً مصيب

    He speaks to himself about her absence,

    With wrong assumptions and accurate regrets.

  26. تَهَّدى الخيرُ من كَثَبٍ إليها

    فكيف أضلها حَوْلُ الطبيب

    Goodness came rushing to her,

    So how could the course of time lead her astray?

  27. أبا عَبْدِ الألهِ وقد تسامَتْ

    لك الأيامُ بالعَجَبِ العجيب

    Oh Abu Abdillah, and time has continued

    To amaze you with its wondrous wonders.

  28. أتَجْزَعُ للزمانِ وأنت منه

    مكانَ الحَزْم من صدر اللبيب

    Do you grieve for time while you

    Are the place of wisdom in the breast of the intelligent?

  29. عزاءَك إنما الإنسانُ نَهْبٌ

    على أَيدي الحوادث والخطوب

    Your consolation is that man is merely

    Spoils in the hands of events and misfortunes.

  30. وأنت نصيبُنَا منْ كلِّ شيءٍ

    فَدُمْتَ وَحَسْبُنَا أوْفَى نصيب

    And you are our share of everything,

    So you have remained, and sufficed, as the best of shares.
