1. أقلُّ ما تهبُ الأعمارُ والدولُ

    ودونَ ما تَتَعَاطى القولُ والعملُ

    The least that life and power grant

    And less than what speech and deed amount to

  2. وَمِنْ منايا الأَعَادِي إذْ فرغتَ لهم

    ألا يواريهمْ سَهْلٌ ولا جَبَلُ

    Is to shield your enemies when you defeat them

    So no plain or mountain shelters them

  3. ومن دلائلِ ما أُعْطِيْتَ من ظَفَرٍ

    ألا يكونَ لهم رزقٌ ولا أجَل

    And proof of the victory you were granted

    Is that they have no livelihood or reprieve

  4. وَإنَّ سَيْفَكْ لا يثْنِي جَهَالَتَهُ

    حتى يُبَيّنَ للجهّالِ ما جَهِلوا

    For your sword does not curb its ignorance

    Until it shows the ignorant their blindness

  5. نارٌ تسوقُ العِدا من حيثما حُشِرُوا

    إلى الثرى وهو مَأوَاهُمْ إذا قتلوا

    A fire that drives the foe wherever they gather

    To dust, their refuge when they die

  6. هِنْدِيّةٌ لم يزلْ بالهندِ مغتربٌ

    يَدْعُو بها كلمّا شَبّتْ وَيَبْتَهِلُ

    An Indian flashing in India estranged

    Calling out whenever it ignites and implores

  7. من نارِ كِسْرَى وكانتْ قَبلهُ سِمَةً

    للبرق يُسْمَى بها الصمصامة النّمِلُ

    Of Kisra's fire, which before him was the hallmark

    Of lightning, ants are named for it

  8. رَبْداء تَضْحَكُ في الهيجاءِ عنْ لُمَعٍ

    كما التقى الدَّمْعُ والأَجْفَانُ والكُحُل

    Dewdrop laughing in the dreariness for a gleam

    As tears, eyelids, and kohl meet

  9. مازال فيها لِصَاليها وَمُوقِدِهَا

    سرٌّ به عُبِدَ المريخُ أو زُحَل

    In it a secret still for its worshipers and tenders

    By which Mars or Jupiter were worshipped

  10. وربما انجابَ عنها الغمد فاضطرمتْ

    زهراءَ يَعْشُو إليها الفارسُ البطل

    It may burst from its sheath flaring

    Green, which the valiant knight dreams of

  11. وَرُبَّما خالها رَقْراقَ غاديةٍ

    فظل ينظر هل في عِطْفِهِ بَلَلُ

    It may lack a maiden's trilling song

    And he keeps watching for wetness on its curve

  12. أَعْيَا عليه أَنِهْيٌ في قَرَارَتِهِ

    أمْ مارج من لظى ترْمي به شُعَل

    Does exhaustion in its stillness tire him

    Or the fiery brand's heat that hurls sparks?

  13. وقد أَرَاهُ بها الضَديْنِ رَافِعُها

    فإنما هي تَبْدُو ثم تَشْتكِلُ

    He sees it bear the two opposites raising it

    For it only appears then wanes

  14. تخبو فلا غَرْوَ أن يرْوَى بريقَتِها

    وَيَهْتَدِي بِسَنَاهَا حينَ تَشْتعل

    It hides so none should see its glow

    And be guided by its brilliance when lit

  15. فداؤك السيف في يمناه قاتله

    فدونه ولأمِّ الحائنِ الهَبَلُ

    May the sword ransom you, killing in its right

    It, not the crazed fool's club, is sovereign

  16. وإن رمْحَكَ لا يَثْنِي مَعَاطِفَهُ

    إلا انْثَنَى القِرْنُ لا يألُو ولا يئل

    Your spear cannot be bent to fold its robes

    Unless the spearshaft bends, never flagging or fading

  17. حُلْوُ المَجَسَّةِ لا عَبْلٌ ولا قَضِفٌ

    قَصْدُ المهزَّةِ لا كَزٌّ ولا خَطِل

    Sweet of touch, no numbness or roughness

    The goal of prodding, no deviation or wrong

  18. مستحصد المتن إمّا هزَّه عجباً

    يميل صَرْف الرَّدى فيهِ وَيعْتَدلُ

    A compact blade, excellent however you swing it

    Inclining however you push back destruction evenly

  19. تُزْهى به الطعنةُ النجلاءُ يطْعَنُها

    كأنّما استعْملتها الأعينُ النُّجُلُ

    The crisp polished point made more radiant with it

    As if the bright eyes employed it as a needle

  20. لا تُبْصرُ الموتَ إلا حيث تُبْصِره

    موتاً يُسدِّدُ أحياناً ويعتقل

    It sees not death but where it sees it

    A death appointing some times and postponing

  21. أَذاكَ أم عَزْمَةٌ رُمْت الصليبَ بها

    وقد أتت دونَهُ الغيطانُ والقُلَلُ

    Is this or a resolve that cast the cross with it

    Though before it were ravines and hills?

  22. فسائِلِ الرومَ هل كانتْ على ثقة

    منْ غَزوِ أروَعَ يُعْطي الغزو ما يَسَل

    Ask the Romans, did they feel confidence

    Of facing the finest invasion, giving all it seeks?

  23. قادَ الجيادَ إليهم من مَرَابطِها

    ماضٍ إذا عرَّد الهيابَةُ الوَكِل

    He drove the steeds from their stance against them

    Going, when awe made the delegate freeze

  24. يَغْشى القتالَ فإن تضللْهُ فالتَقِهِ

    حيثُ الحتوفُ على الأرواح تقْتَتِل

    It covers the battle, and if it misguides him, meet it

    Where souls grapple in the fray's midst

  25. إياكَ من أسدٍ تشقى الأسودُ به

    في كفِّهِ غُلَّةٌ تَرْوي بها الغلل

    Beware a lion the lions dread in his grasp

    A handful with which he sates the thirsty

  26. ولا تَحدَّثْ عن الدنيا فذا مَلِكٌ

    تَحُلُّ في جيشه الدنيا وترتحل

    Speak not of worldly things, for he's a king

    The world moves through his army and departs

  27. وقائدٌ تزدْهي الآفاقُ طَلْعَتَهُ

    إذا ذُكاءُ زَهاها الثورُ والحمل

    A leader, horizons flourish at his rising

    When his might's brilliance shines like Taurus or Aries

  28. إذا تَجَلى لها في حُجْبِ هَيْبَتِهِ

    فَكُلّث شيءٍ يُوازِي ضَوْءَهَا خَجِلُ

    When it appears to them in his awe's veil

    All things matching its light are ashamed

  29. وبحرُ جودٍ إذا التجَّتْ غواربُهُ

    فَأَبْلغِ البحرَ عنّي أَنه وَشَل

    A sea of plenty, when its ships cluster

    Tell the sea it is inadequate

  30. وباذخٌ لا تنالُ الطيرُ ذِرْوَتَهُ

    حتى سَوَاءٌ به العِقْبَانُ والحجل

    A lofty peak birds cannot reach its summit

    Until eagles and partridges are leveled with it

  31. ضخمٌ تَرَى للغوادي في جَوَانِبِه

    مساحباً نَبْتُها الحَوْذانُ والنَّفَل

    In its sides you see mounts and vines

    Trailing their shoots and blossoms

  32. بها مليكٌ بنورِ الحقِّ ممتزجٌ

    وظلُّ أَمْنٍ بسترِ اللهِ مُتَّصِل

    A sovereign mingled with the light of truth

    And shade of security attached to God's veil

  33. وَعَزْمَةٌ في جهادِ الكُفْرِ ماضيةٌ

    من غَرْبها لا الشبا الماضي ولا الأسَل

    A resolve advancing in fighting unbelief

    From its sunset, no westering, setting, or nightfall

  34. يُدْعَى الأميرُ أبو يحيى بها ولها

    إذا تَوَاكَلَ أقوامٌ أو اتَّكَلُوا

    The prince Abu Yahya is called to it and by it

    When a people rely or depend

  35. خفَّ الأعادي بها عن عُقْرِ دارهم

    لقد عَجِلْتَ إليهمْ أوْ لقدْ عجلوا

    It drove the enemies away from ravaging their homes

    You hurried to them or they hurried

  36. شافهْ طليطلةً ماذا تريدُ بها

    بِالعَطْفِ إنْ أشكَلَ التوكيدُ والبدل

    It asked Toledo, what do you want of it?

  37. أَمْطَرْتَ ما حولها الموتَ الزؤامَ فهلْ

    من عَوْدةٍ أيُّهذا العارضُ الهَطِل

    You rained death around it, is this cloudburst

    Of events returning, O pouring rain?

  38. فإنْ تثُبْ أو تُقارِبْ والنَّوى أمَمٌ

    فقد خَلَتْ قَبْلها الأمْثَالُ والمُثلُ

    If it rises or draws near while aims are hopes

    Examples and parables have passed before it

  39. فإنْ أبتْ فالرَّدى رَهْنٌ بِمُعْضِلَةٍ

    لا القارةُ انتصفتْ منها ولا عضَلُ

    If it refuses, havoc is hostage to a quandary

    Neither the continent was halved nor muscle hewn

  40. أوْلى لهمْ ثم أولى للصّليبِ بها

    منْ عارضٍ صَوبُهُ الأسْيافُ والأسل

    Best for them, then best for the cross through it

    Than a contingent with the swords' wont and habit

  41. وللعدا دُونَها من حَرِّ مَلْحَمَةٍ

    يكادُ منها الهواءُ الرَّطبُ يشتْعل

    And for the enemies near it, from battle's heat

    That almost makes the damp air ignite

  42. ومن رحىً لمناياهمْ يَدورُ بها

    يومٌ تضيقُ بهِ الآفاقُ والسُّبُلُ

    And from a mill grinding their deaths, revolving with it

    A day the horizons narrow and paths constrict

  43. يومٌ شتِيمُ المحيّا لا يُزَيّنُهُ

    حليٌ وإن كانَ لا يُزري به العَطَلُ

    A day the alive are scorned, adorned

    By no ornament, even if untroubled by decline

  44. وأعصلُ النابِ إن يُغْرَ الكماةُ به

    كذلك الحربُ في أَنْيابِها عَصَل

    The most potent fang, if the champions are deluded by it

    Thus war in its jaws is potent

  45. ومن مَكَرِّ أبي يحيى وَمَوقِفِهِ

    بحيثُ يُؤمَنُ أو لا يُؤمَنُ الزَّلل

    From Abu Yahya's cunning and position

    Where safety is unsure or unsure

  46. أَبِدْ فداكَ رجالٌ لو عرَضْتَ لهمْ

    دونَ الحياةِ لما قَالوا ولا فعلوا

    Live forever! Men, if you had offered in place of life

    Would not have spoken or acted

  47. كيفَ السبيلُ إلى يومٍ أُؤَمّلُهُ

    يكونُ لي ولحسَّادي به شُغُلُ

    How is the path to a day I wish for

    Where I and my enviers are busy with it?

  48. حتى أُقبّلَ يُمْنَاكَ التي حَظِيَتْ

    بها الظُّبَى قَبْلَ أَنْ نَحْظَى بها القُبَل

    That I may kiss your right hand which

    The gazelles gained before we gained kisses

  49. وأشتكي جَوْرَ أيَّامي إلى مَلِكٍ

    لا يَحْضُرُ الجُبْنُ يوميه ولا البَخَل

    And complain of the tyranny of my days to a king

    Whom neither cowardice nor greed attend

  50. يا أيها الملكُ الميمونُ طَائِرُهُ

    يا بدرُ يا بحرُ يا ضرغامُ يا رجل

    O blessed king, of auspicious influence, O full moon

    O sea, O pleiades, O man!

  51. أتاركي لصروفِ الدهرِ تلعبُ بي

    وقد حَدَاني إليكَ الحبُّ والأمل

    Will you leave me to time's caprice playing with me

    When love and hope drew me toward you?

  52. شكرتُ نُعْماك لما قلَّ شاكرُهَا

    إن الكريمَ على العلاَّتِ يَعْتَمِل

    I thanked you for blessings when gratitude was little

    For the generous shows favor despite defects

  53. وهاكها يقتضيكَ الحسنُ رَوْنَقَها

    وإن لَوَتْهَا به الأعذارُ والعِلَل

    Take them, goodness befits their charm

    Though excuses and faults distort them

  54. تَطَاوَلَ الدهرُ منها لو يُعَارِضُهُ

    دهرٌ عُلاَكَ به الأسحارُ والأصُل

    Time has tempted them, if a time contests it

    Your loftiness in it the dawns and origins vie

  55. سيارةٌ في أقاصي الأرضِ شاردةً

    مما تُرَوِّي لكَ العَلْيَا وَترْتجِلُ

    A departing star in earth's corners
