1. حسبي من المال أَغْرَاهُمْ وَعزَّهُمُ

    علمٌ تتيهُ به الأقلامُ والصُّحُف

    I am content with the delusions of wealth and honor that mislead pens and books.

    Grief comes not but fate bewilders,

  2. والحَزْنُ إلا يكنْ والأمرُ مُسْتَبِهٌ

    فيه الغديرُ وفيهُ الروضةُ الأنُفُ

    There is the pond and the verdant garden.

    The vizier passed away so every woman who enjoyed

  3. آبَ الوزيرُ فآبتْ كلُّ عارفةٍ

    بها ترفُّ ظلالُ الفَخْرِ أو تَرِفُ

    The shades of pride or affluence has passed away.

    The Bestower, the Withholder, the fair, gentle one

  4. الواهبُ الكاعبَ الحسناءَ آنسةً

    يُنَافِسُ القُضْبَ في أعطافها الترف

    Whose locks compete with bending branches in delicacy.

    Of every slothful woman except one burdened

  5. من كلِّ هيفاءَ إلا فضلةٌ ثَقُلَتْ

    عن الوِشَاحِ فلم يَنْهَضْ بها الهَيَف

    Too heavy for her shift, so her sloth could not carry it.

    The swimmer displaying her breasts proudly with her rider

  6. والسابحَ النَّهْدَ مختالاً براكبهِ

    كأنه بِرِدَاءِ الصُّبْحِ مُلْتَحِفُ

    As if clothed in the robe of dawn she uncovers.

    Like a truncates trunk until it grew so long,

  7. كالجِذْعِ شُذِّبَ حتى طالَ ثم هَفَا

    ذاك السَّبيب فقلنا إنه سَعَف

    We said that sapling has branches.

    Passing like a well-aimed arrow

  8. يمرُّ كالعارضِ المركومِ مُعْتَرضاً

    حيث المنايا غِمَارٌ والمُنَى نُطَف

    Where death is thick and fate is bleeding.

    Mares prancing or gathering like a herd

  9. جذلانَ والدَّمُ في أعْطَافِهِ دُفَعٌ

    وثائرُ النَّقْعِ من أرْجَائِه كِسَف

    Branches colliding then twisting away.

    The Indian sword the vanquisher fulfills with it the desires of the desperate

  10. والخيلُ تَمْزَعُ أو تلتفُّ كالحةً

    مثلَ الغُصُونِ تَلاقَى ثم تَنْعَطِف

    It is lightning snatched for destructive madness.

    The spear adorns it out of wonder and awe

  11. والصارمُ العَضْبُ يَقْضِي المستميتُ به

    بَرْقٌ ولكنه للهام مُخْتَطِفُ

    Does it not know it has a pliant nature?

    It sways like a bough not from flexibility or bending point

  12. يُزْهى به الرمحُ من عُجْبٍ ومن عَجبٍ

    أما درى أنه ذو مَلّةٍ طَرِف

    You would think it aromatic but it is extinguishing.

    It heals the crushing injustice and you'd reckon it

  13. يهتزُّ كالغُصْنِ لا من لينِ مُنْعَطَفٍ

    تخالهُ أريحيّاً وهو مُلْتَهِف

    Crushed until the injustice healed it.

    The dark skinned tender one with ten and one

  14. يشفي من الدَّنَفِ المُضني وَتحْسِبُهُ

    مُضْنىً تَخامَلَ حتى شَفَّهُ الدَّنَفُ

    Between the two moustaches, no substitute or severing.

    The harshest thing on hips it erodes them

  15. والأسمرُ اللدنُ ذا عَشْرٍ وواحدةٍ

    بين السبيلين لا عَبْلٌ ولا قَضِفُ

    When he loved until he almost melted them away.

    Not at all, you gave without favor and without blame

  16. أشدُّ شيءٍ على الأصلاب يَقصِفها

    وقد تأَوَّد حتى كاد يضنْقَصِف

    Without feebleness, bending, swerving or injustice.

    Those virtues while covenants are determined

  17. كلاَّ بذلتَ ولا مَنٌّ ولا مَذَلٌ

    ولا اعتلالٌ ولا ليٌّ ولا جَنَف

    And the pact with you is binding without variance.

    Who preceded what you gave of generosity and aid

  18. تلك العلا وهي آمادٌ مُقَدَّرةٌ

    وعَهْدُها بك يُسْتَوفَى ويؤتنفُ

    Then the Zuhair clan did precede you.

    The victors over what others missed

  19. منْ كان أسْلفَ ما أسْلَفْتَ مِنْ كَرَمٍ

    ونجدةٍ فَبنُو زُهْرٍ له سَلَف

    None shall precede them if they halt.

    The benevolent beyond the rights of their neighbor

  20. الغالبون على ما فاتَ غَيرَهُمُ

    لا يُسبقُون إلى شيءٍ وإن وَقَفُوا

    Even if rancor and hatred grow.

    A people death's redness protects

  21. والمُؤْثِرُونَ على ما حاقَ جارَهُمُ

    وإن تكاثرتِ الشَّنْآنُ والشَّنَفُ

    When they attack and when they march.

    The excellent in prolonged description, the horsemen of eloquence

  22. قومٌ تُحامي المنايا الحمرُ دونهم

    إذا احْتَبَوْا وَتَحامَاهمْ إذا زَحَفُوا

    The stalwarts of heroism, no isolation and no disclosure.

    Fate cannot hope to abandon those they supported

  23. هُضْبُ الإطالةِ فُرْسَانُ المقالةِ

    جِنَّانُ البَسَالةِ لا عُزْلٌ ولا كُشُفُ

    Nor can it deny what they made known.

    And a night the dawn cannot make up for its loss

  24. لا يطمعُ الدهرُ في خِذلانِ مَنْ نصروا

    ولا يجوزُ له إنكارُ ما عَرَفوا

    When grey hair and senility became clear in it.

    When deficiency touches it even slightly

  25. وليلةٍ لا يرومُ الصبحُ سَقْطَتَها

    وقد تَبَيَّنَ فيها الشيبُ والخَرَف

    It touches you with a quarter you cannot endure.

    I visited it while the stars the blossoms standing still

  26. إذا تخوَّنها النقصانُ من طَرَفٍ

    تَخَوَّنَتْهُ بِرَبْعٍ ما له طرف

    As if veiled in the night's darkness.

    Until dawn appeared confused and some gloom remained

  27. سريتُها والنجومُ الزهرُ واقفةٌ

    كأنها بسوادِ الليلِ تُكْتَنَفُ

    From the mantle of grandeur the lofty pavilions.

    I camped beneath the portico of glory guarded by

  28. حتى بدا الصبحُ مرتاباً وقد بَقِيَتْ

    من الدُّجَى لتعلاتِ السُّرى نُتَفُ

    The young lions and the sublime carved enclosure.

    Where resolve is inviolable and the seeker of refuge is generous

  29. أَنخْتُ تحتَ رُواقِ العزِّ تَكْنُفُهُ

    ألسادةُ الغُرُّ والمقْوَرَّةُ الشُّيُف

    And the kingdom is flawless, neither bent nor deficient.

    You omitted nothing from your beauty that is without diminishment

  30. حيث الحِمَى حَرَمٌ والمنتمى كَرَمٌ

    والمُلْكُ لا أوَدٌ فيه ولا وَكَف

    Do not lie for the sun is eclipsed.

    I take from my bosom for she who touched my bosom

  31. أَخِلْتَ حُسنَكَ شيئاً لا انتقاصَ له

    لا تكذبنَّ فإن الشمسَ تَنْكَسِف

    While the free man is angered at times and avenges himself.

    How many brothers I intended it but deprivation prevented us

  32. إني لآخذُ من وجدي لموجدتي

    والحرُّ يَغْضبُ أحياناً فينتصف

    When the path is difficult if you turn against it, it will not stand still.

    After many days passed between us

  33. كم من أخٍ رامها مني فَمَانَعَه

    صَعْبُ القيادِ إذا جاراك لا يَقِفُ

    Estrangement from him and kindness and gentleness from me.

    Sometimes he pastures so I say he drew near

  34. من بعد ما طالتِ الأيام بي وبه

    منهُ الجفاءُ ومني البرُّ واللُّطُفُ

    Out of love or turned away from me.

    Until when those conditions changed with him

  35. وتارةً يَرْعَوِي حتى أقولُ دنا

    به هوىً أو تأتَّى منه مُنْصَرَفُ

    And all that unites one day will differ.

    If only during my estrangement I had said to him

  36. حتى إذا اختلفتْ تلك الشؤونُ به

    وكلُّ مُتَّفِقٍ يوماً سَيَخْتَلفُ

    Today do you know watcher how to admit?

    Turn away wherever you wish for I am a gazelle

  37. وليته ذات هجري ثم قلت له

    أليوم تعرف ناظر كيف تعترف

    And abandon me wherever you wish for I am rugged.

    In me whenever good fortune turns away or tranquility becomes distant

  38. من حيثُ شئتَ فْذَرْني إنني زَمِرٌ

    وحيثُ شئتَ فَكِلْني إنني حَشَف

    A soul despondent and a nose filled with pride.

    And an ambition whenever it inclines to honor

  39. بي كُلَّما نابَ خَطْبٌ أو نأَيَ سكنٌ

    نَفْسٌ عزَوفٌ وأَنْف كله أَنَف

    It hopes so I hope from its ambition the highest.

  40. وهمةٌ كلما أفْضَتْ إلى شرفٍ

    طالتْ فعنَّ لها منْ همتها شضرَف
