1. اركبْ إلى المجدِ أنضاء الأعاصيرِ

    وَجُبْ مع السَّعْد أحشْاءَ الدياجيرِ

    Ride the storms to glory,

    And brave the perils with good fortune,

  2. ومُدَّ بالجودِ كفاً ربما وَسِعَتْ

    مُلْكَ الأنامِ وتصريفَ المقادير

    Give generously with open hands,

    That may hold the rule of mankind and the course of fate.

  3. وَجَرِّدِ السيفَ مطروراً تصولُ به

    يمينُ عزمٍ كحدِّ السيفِ مطرور

    Unsheathe the sharpened sword, wield it

    With resolute might like the blade’s edge.

  4. ذا رونقٍ لو نواتيه المُنَى لجرى

    مَعَ السّماحِ على تلك الأسارير

    If the appointed hour spared its beauty,

    It would flow with magnanimity over those thrones.

  5. وَنُبْ عن الدينِ والدنيا فقد برئا

    إليك منْ كلِّ تقديمٍ وتأخير

    Renounce religion and worldly things,

    They are cleared of advancing or delaying you.

  6. أشبهتَ آباءَك الصيدَ الذين سَعَوا

    في البأس والجودِ سَعْيا غيرَ مكفور

    You resembled your forefathers, hunters

    Who strove with valor and generosity in deed not forgotten.

  7. من كلِّ ذي أثر في كلِّ حادثةٍ

    يسْمُو به كلُّ فخرٍ عنك مأثور

    From every notable in every event

    Soaring with pride derived from you.

  8. وذي جَنَابٍ متى تُلْمِمْ بجانبه

    فاربعْ بسيناءَ واخلعْ جانبَ الطور

    And the noble, when you stand by his side,

    Mount Sinai, and cast off the side of Al-Tour.

  9. ترى الدنانيرَ تهمي من أكفهمُ

    سحّاً وأوجههمْ مثلُ الدنانير

    You see gold coins rushing from their palms

    Largesse, and their faces like gold dinars.

  10. قومٌ إبادٌ أبوهم حين تَنْسِبُهُمْ

    مجدٌ لعَمْرُ أبيهمْ غيرُ منزور

    A folk whose father if you trace their ancestry

    Glory, by the life of their father, not diminished.

  11. أكلما جَنَّ ليلٌ جُبْتُ غيهبه

    بواضحٍ من سنا مرآك مشهور

    Whenever night descends I meet its darkness

    With a lamp flaming from your oil well known.

  12. أو لاح صبحٌ بدتْ سيماكَ باهرةً

    بين البشائر منه والتباشير

    Or dawn breaks and your features shine bright

    Among its tidings and foretokens.

  13. في جُنْح كلِّ ظلامٍ لا تزودُ به

    كُدْرُ القطا غيرَ نَجْثٍ بالمناقير

    On the wing of every darkness do not equip

    The murk of blindness but with eagle eyes.

  14. ترى الكواكبَ حَيْرَى في دُجَاهُ كما

    جالتْ حَجَى الماء في خُضْرِ القوارير

    You see the planets wandering in its gloom as

    Necklaces wavered in the green goblets.

  15. وكل هاجرةٍ تَغْلي مراجلُها

    كأنما مُصْطَلاها قلبُ موتور

    And every migrant's ardors seethe

    As if her burning desires were those of the lovelorn,

  16. يبيتُ حرباؤُهَا بالليلِ منتصباً

    وإن أطلَّ فلم ينظرْ إلى النور

    Whose heated passion persists through the night

    And should it subside, sees no light.

  17. تحمى الشكائمُ في أشْدَاقها حَنَقاً

    كأنَّما هيَ منه في التنانير

    The cheeks guard bitterness in their depths,

    As if it were rubbed on them from the jars.

  18. تعصي القنا وهي أدناها إلى كَرَمٍ

    أثناءَ مُنْتَصِبٍ منها ومجرور

    The vine defies the canals while it is lower down

    Erect in parts, trailing in others.

  19. مهلاً فقد نِلْتَ في أمنٍ وفي دَعَةٍ

    ما نال غيرُك في خَوْفٍ وتغرير

    Gently, you gained in peace and leisure

    What none gained in fear and illusion.

  20. لك البسيطةُ تطويها وتنشرُهَا

    عن مُقْتضَى كلِّ مطويٍّ وَمَنْشُور

    The plain is yours to fold and unfold

    As suits each folded and outstretched state.

  21. والبحرُ مُضْطَرمُ الأمواجِ زاخرُها

    ترى المعارفَ فيه كالمناكير

    And the tumultuous sea with surging waves

    You see kinship in it like strangers.

  22. موْفٍ على النفسِ مستوفٍ حُشاشتها

    يُصوِّرُ الموتَ فيها كلَّ تصوير

    Fulfilling the soul's every desire

    Depicting death in it in every form.

  23. قُلْ ما بدا لك إلا في غواربه

    تسمو بملْ عيون مثلها صور

    Say, nothing seemed but in its hidden depths

    Do sublime spirits like them take form?

  24. طوْراً كما هزَّ من عطفيه ذو خَنَثٍ

    ناغى الصّبابين تَنْزيف وتَفْتير

    One moment it shakes from its shoulder like the mincing gait

    Of a youth singing with modulation and trilling.

  25. وتارةً مثلَ ما يهتاجُ مُخْتَبلُ

    عالَ الأُسَى غِبَّ تعذيبٍ وتعذير

    Another it imitates what the ecstatic rages

    High in anguish, confusion, and reproach.

  26. ركبتَه تَتَصدَّى الموجَ عن عُرُضٍ

    على مباحٍ مِنَ الأهواء محظور

    You rode its wave with steadfastness

    Despite forbidded whims and desires.

  27. إذا طما مَوْجُهُ أو طمَّ قمتَ له

    بمخبرٍ عنه في البأساءِ مخبور

    When its surge grew violent or grew clamorous, you stood

    With tested valor in tribulations discreet.

  28. وكلما اربدَّ يستشري نداكَ له

    فَطَبَّقَ الأرضَ مسجورٌ كمسجور

    And whenever its ferocity cooled, your help warmed to it,

    So it sprawled level like the leveled.

  29. كما تَخَلّلَ برقٌ عُرْضَ ساريةٍ

    فلم يَزِدْهُ نَدَاها غيرَ تسعير

    As a lightning flashed on the expanse of a meadow

    Your friendship added to it only kindling.

  30. تراك كنتَ عَصا مُوسى براحتِهِ

    أو كانَ عَزْمُكَ هوْلض النفخِ في الصور

    You were Moses' staff in his grasp

    Or your resolve was the first blast of the horn.

  31. تَسْمو بهمّكَ والأهوال ساميةٌ

    وللردى ثَمَّ سهمٌ غير مغمور

    With your concerns, aspirations are sublime,

    And for havoc there is still an unerring arrow.

  32. بكرٌ عوانٌ فتاةٌ كهلةٌ ذَهَبَتْ

    أُعْجُوبَةً بين تأنيثٍ وتذكير

    A young virgin, an old woman,

    A wonder between femininity and masculinity.

  33. حُبْلَى لها فَتَكاتٌ في أجِنّتها

    على اقتدار لهم فيها وتكدير

    Pregnant with deadly young in her womb

    Able against her will to disturb and stir.

  34. واهاً لهم بين جَنْبَيْها وأنفسُهُمْ

    تَجِيشُ بين التراقي والحناجير

    Alas for them between her sides and themselves

    Seething between ascent and descent.

  35. كأنَّهمْ بين مَثْنَاها وَمَلْعَبها

    ظنونُ حيرانَ أو أنْفَاسُ مَبْهُور

    As if between her wings and her realm

    They are wandering suspicions or smothered breaths.

  36. عامتْ وطارتْ وقالتْ للرِّياحِ ألاَ

    عُوْجي على أثَري إن شئْتِ أو طيري

    She floated and flew saying to the winds,

    "Divert my course if you wish or let me soar."

  37. حتى تَرَقَّتْ مِنَ اللأْوَا إلى مَلِكٍ

    مُؤَيَّدٍ منكَ في اللأَوْاءِ منصور

    Until she transcended the firmament to a king

    Secured through you in the firmament triumphant.
