1. إليكِ فقد عرفتكِ أُمَّ دَفْرٍ

    فَلَنْ تَجِدِي إلى خَدْعِي سَبيلا

    To you, for I have known you as a mother of a book

    So you will not find a way to deceive me

  2. نفضتُ يديَّ منكِ على يقينٍ

    صحيحٍ نَهْنَهَ الشكَّ العليلا

    I shook my hands off you with certainty

    The lingering doubt cured the chronic illness

  3. أتى دون الأَسَى المعتادِ صَبْري

    وجلّ فهوَّنَ الصبرَ الجليلا

    My patience came without the usual sorrow

    And the great patience was made easier

  4. وقلَّبْتُ الورى ظهراً لِبَطنٍ

    فلم أَحْمَدْهُمُ إلاَّ قليلا

    And I turned the world upside down

    But praised them little

  5. تُرَاوِحُنَا المنيَّةُ أوْ تُغَادِي

    فإنْ تَسْطِعْ فَدَعْهَا أنْ تَصولا

    Death keeps pacing or ignoring us

    So if it prevails, let it rage

  6. وَنَحْنُ نَجِدُّ في حبِّ الأَماني

    لِنَجْنُبَهُنَّ صَعْباً أو ذَلُولا

    And we try hard to love desires

    To avoid them, difficult or easy

  7. هيَ الشَّهَوَاتُ لا تنفَكُّ تُصْغِي

    إليهنَّ السَّوَامِعَ والعقولا

    They are desires that never cease to make

    The perceptions and minds attentive

  8. كأنا حيثُ لم نَسَعِ المنايا

    فَطَبَقَتِ الحُزُونَةَ والسُّهولا

    As if we, when we did not heed death

    It overwhelmed the sorrowful and the plains

  9. لِنَبْكِ على بَقيَّةِ آلِ حَزْمٍ

    عُيُونْهُمُ شَبَاباً أو كُهُولا

    To cry for the rest of the Hazms

    Their eyes, youth or elders

  10. على حاميهمُ أنْ يسْتَضَامُوا

    وَمَانِعِ دَهْرِهِمْ أن يَسْتَطيلا

    It is for their protector to be supported

    And their age's preventer to be enabled

  11. أَعزُّهُمُ على الأَيَّامِ جَاراً

    وَأهدَاهُمْ إلى العَلْيَا دليلا

    Their most honorable against days as a neighbor

    And their guide to the most high as a guide

  12. مضى وكأنَّهُ الدنيا تَوَلَّتْ

    ولكن لا نَظيرَ ولا بَديلا

    He passed as if the world had turned away

    But no peer or substitute

  13. مُصَابٌ كفَّ دونكَ كلَّ صَبْرٍ

    فلا تكففُ دموعَكَ أنْ تسيلا

    An affliction that stops every patience short of you

    So do not restrain your tears from flowing

  14. ألمْ يكُ حُبُّهُ كَهْفاً منيعاً

    ألم يكُ قُرْبُهُ ظِلاً ظليلا

    Was not his love a fortified refuge?

    Was not his proximity shady shade?

  15. ألم يكُ لليتامَى والأَيامَى

    وليّاً حانياً وَلهاً وَصُولا

    Was he not to the orphans and widows

    A gentle guardian, passionate and arriving?

  16. ألم يكُ حينَ يَدْجُو الخطبُ بَدْراً

    ولكنْ لا سَرَارَ ولا أُفُولا

    When troubles whispered, was he not a full moon?

    But no revealing or setting

  17. ألَمْ يُحْرِزْ نهايةَ كلِّ مَجْدٍ

    يقولُ الفَصْلَ أو يُعْطِي الجزيلا

    Did he not earn the epitome of all glory

    That states the merit or grants the plenty?

  18. ولما لم يقمْ للعلمِ وَزْنٌ

    فأَصْبَحَ جاهُ حامِله خُمُولا

    And when no worth stood for knowledge

    His prominence became the bearer's ineptitude

  19. تَجَرَّدَ دونَه سَيْفاً حُسَاماً

    وَهَبَّ لأَهله ريحاً بَليلا

    He parted from it a sharp pruning sword

    And bestowed upon his people a howling wind

  20. وكان لكلِّ مَكْرُمَةٍ إماماً

    وكانَ بكلِّ صالحةٍ كفيلا

    He was the leader of every honor

    And the guarantor of every righteous deed

  21. أقولُ وقد نعاهُ ناعياهُ

    أحُمَّ لركنِ رَضْوَى أنْ يَزُولا

    I say, and his obituarists have announced

    I fear the pillar of acceptance would shake

  22. وما شمطاءُ ضامتها الليالي

    على أنْ لا قريبَ ولا دَخيلا

    What nights whose darkness grief has clenched

    That there is neither a close nor remote relative

  23. وشبَّ لها على شَمَط وَشَيْبٍ

    وَيَأسٍ من زمانٍ أنْ يُقيلا

    He grew to it gray hair on grayness

    And despair of time to settle

  24. سليلاً ماجدِ الآباءِ قرمٍ

    وطالا واستحقَّا أنْ يَطُولا

    The descendant of the fathers' glory, dignified

    Tall, deserving to be tall

  25. فأصبحَ في المقانبِ لا سُلَيْكاً

    وأصْبَحَ في التنسُّكِ لا أبِيلا

    So he became peerless in morals

    And became matchless in devotion

  26. إلى الحظَيْنِ من دنيا وَأُخْرَى

    أقرَّ العينَ منه حين نيلا

    To both fortunes of this world and the next

    He delighted the eye when he attained

  27. أصابَ كليهما سًهْمُ المنايا

    فلم تَمْلِكْ له إلا العَويلا

    The arrows of death hit both

    And for him she could only wail

  28. أقَبْرَ محمدٍ ولو اسْتَطَعْنَا

    لقاءَ محمد لَشَفَى الغليلا

    If only we could meet Muhammad after his burial

    It would heal the agony

  29. أظَلَّكَ كلُّ أوْطَفَ مُسْتَهِلِّ

    يُسَقّيك الرحيقَ السَّلْسبيلا

    Every gentle drizzle will shade you

    To water you with pouring drink

  30. وكيف نجدُّ في استسقاءِ غَيْثِ

    لقبرٍ ضُمّنَ الغيثَ الهَطُولا

    How can we find in begging rain

    For a grave rain has contained the downpour?

  31. غزاءً يا بني حزمٍ عزاءً

    فإنَّ لكلِّ نائبةٍ بديلا

    Consolation, O Hazms' sons, consolation

    For every mishap has a substitute

  32. وما عَزَّيْتُ قبلكمُ قبيلاً

    أُصِيْبَ بواحدٍ يُدْعَى قبيلا

    And I have never consoled a tribe before

    Struck with one named a tribe

  33. إلى من تَضْرَعونَ بكلِّ همٍّ

    يَؤودُ أخَفُّهُ الجَلْدَ الحَمُولا

    To whom do you plead with every anxiety

    Whose slightest would rend the carried skin?

  34. إلى من تُسْنِدُونَ بكلِّ خطبٍ

    يكون جِلاؤُهُ الرأيَ الصَّقيلا

    Upon whom do you depend in every plight

    Whose clarification is the polished opinion?

  35. بمنْ تَسْتَظهِرونَ على الليالي

    إذا حكمتْ فخفتمْ أنْ تَميلا

    With whom do you seek help against the nights

    If they judged and you feared tilting?

  36. ومَنْ تَسْتَصْرِخونَ على الأَعادي

    إذا استنكرتمُ منهمْ حَويلا

    And whom do you cry out to against enemies

    If you disliked their scheming?

  37. بني حزم وَطُوْلُكُمُ فُرُوعاً

    يُبَيّنُ أنكُمْ طِبْتُمْ أُصُولا

    O Hazms, though you are long branches

    It is evident you have wholesome roots

  38. أُعَزِّيكُمْ وليس معي عَزَاءٌ

    ولكن لستُ أتْرُكُ أنْ أقولا

    I console you yet I have no consolation

    But I will not abstain from speaking

  39. إليكَ أبَا الوليدِ هَوَايَ مَحْضَاً

    بَعَثْتُ من القريضِ به رسولا

    To you Abu Al-Walid my passion calls

    I sent with this ode a messenger

  40. على أنّي أُنَادي منْ بعيدٍ

    ولم أُحْمَ اللقاءَ ولا الوُصُولا

    Though I call from afar

    I did not presume meeting or reaching you

  41. ولكن الزَّمَانَةَ قَصّرتْ بي

    وَأجْلَى العُذْرِ ما رُزْقَ القَبُولا

    But times have shortened me

    And prolonged excuses are favored acceptance

  42. وقد زارتْكَ خَيْلُ بناتِ فكري

    ولكنْ لم تَزُرْكَ لِنَسْتَنيلا

    The horses of my thoughts visited you

    But not to get water from you

  43. وعندي من مكارمِ آلِ حَزْمٍ

    طَوَائِلُ منه زِدْنَ رَجَايَ طولا

    And I have from Hazms' virtues

    Ambitions from it that increased my hopes

  44. جمَالَكَ كلُّ حيٍّ سوفَ يَبْرِي

    له صَرْفُ الرَّدَى سَهْماً قَتُولا

    Your beauty time will prove to all living

    Diverting harm is a lethal arrow

  45. تصرَّفتِ الليالي كيفَ شاءَتْ

    فَقَصْراً ليسَ يُجْدي أن تطولا

    The nights have done as they pleased

    A shortcoming that being long will not mend
