في القلبِ من حَرِّ الفِراقِ شُوَاظُ

والدمعُ قد شَرِقَتْ به الألحاظُ

In the heart from the heat of separation are embers

And tears have flowed from the eyes

ولقد حفِظْتُ عهودَكمْ وغدرتُمُ

شتَّانَ غَدْرٌ في الهَوى وحِفَاظُ

And I kept your covenants while you betrayed

Far apart is betrayal in love and faithfulness

لِلهِ أيُّ مواقفٍ رقَّتْ لنا

فيها الرسائلُ والقلوبُ غِلاظُ

Oh God, how tender were the moments

When letters and hearts were harsh

ومرَى العِتابُ جفونَنا فتناسبتْ

تلك المدامعُ فيه والألفاظُ

And reproach dimmed our eyelids appropriately

As the words and tears matched

يا دارُ ما للركبِ حين وقفتمُ

ما إن سقاكِ من الدموع لُماظُ

O house, why when the caravan stopped

Were you not satiated by tears?

ترك الغرامُ عقولَهمْ مدهوشةً

فظننتهمْ رقدُوا وهم أيقاظُ

Passion confused their minds

And I thought them asleep when awake

عهدي بظلّك والشبابُ يَزينُهُ

أيامَ ربعُك للحِسانِ عُكَاظُ

My pact with your shade as youth adorns it

The days of your garden are dwellings for beauty
