I say to my companion, “What do you think of what
I confide to you? Then offer your candid counsel.
I find myself selling my heart in exchange for another heart—
but who is there to buy a wounded heart?
If it remains unsold on my hands and I do not sell it,
I will cast it away, in hopes that I may find rest.”
He said, “My view is that you deal gently
with the wounded heart, despite its ailments.
For it is not just that it should suffer while ailing
in your care, though you took joy in it while it was sound.”
