أرى شَغَفِي بطِلاب العُلَى

يُعرِّضُنِي للأمور العِظَامِ

I see my passion for seeking knowledge

Exposes me to greatest affairs

فأطمعُ في كلِّ صعبِ القِيادِ

وأطلبُ كلَّ منيعِ المَرامِ

So I aspire to every difficult leadership

And desire each impregnable ambition

إِذا ما تقاعدنِي ثروتي

تناهض بي همَّتي واعتزامي

If my wealth makes me retire

My determination and resolve confront me

وإني وإنْ لم أكنْ مُثْرِياً

لَيصغُرُ عندي ثَراءُ الِلئَامِ

And if I am not wealthy

The wealth of scoundrels is belittled to me

وأبلغُ بالعُدمِ ما لا ينالُ

بفضلِ الثَّراءِ وحدِّ الحُسامِ

And with nothingness I attain what

Is not attained by grace of wealth and sharp swords

ولكن جرتْ عادةُ الجَدِّ أنْ

يكايدني بالجُفاةِ الطَّغامِ

But it is the custom of seriousness that

It antagonizes me with rude oppressors

فأينَ مفرّي وما حيلتي

وجَدِّيَ في كلِّ صوبٍ أمامي

So where is my escape and what is my strategy

And my seriousness is ahead of me in every direction
