رطّب تراكيبك إن

جفّت بماء الورقِ

If your ingredients dry out,

Revive them with the water of paper.

إنّ الطبيخ كله

قوته في المرق

All cooking,

Its strength is in the broth.

أول أعشابك أن

تخرج بالماء النقي

First vegetables that

Emerge with pure water

خضرته مشوبة

بحمرة من غسقِ

Its greenness mixed

With redness from dusk.

بعد سواد فاحم

إلى بياض يققِ

After intense blackness

To whiteness that solidifies.

وآية الشمس ظهو

ر حمرة في الشفق

And sign of the sun appearing

Is redness in the sunset.

والزعفران صبغة

يتلوه لون العلق

And saffron is a dye

Followed by color of the calf.

فعود الطفل يسي

ر النار لا يحترقِ

So the child's stick goes on

The fire without burning.

ويتفق منه الذي

ما كان بالمتفق

And what suits is picked out

What was not meant to match.

واحذر عليه نكبة

من غرق أو حرق

And beware of harm to it

From drowning or burning

واحذر على السر ففي ال

إفشاء ضرب العنق

And beware for the secret for in

Divulging is striking of the neck.

تالله ما نال امرؤ

مراده بالخرق

By God, no person attains

His wish through tearing.

ولم تفت حكمتنا

غير جهول أو شقى

And our wisdom was not lacking

Except for ignoramus or unhappy one.

فالرزق لا الحذق هوال

أصل فباللله ثقِ

For sustenance not skill it is

The origin so trust in God.
