موازين الطبائع في يدينا
فننقص كيف شئنا أو نزيدُ
The balances of nature are in our hands;
we diminish as we please, or add.
نقابل بعض ما فيها ببعض
فنخرج عند ذلك ما نريدُ
We set some of what they hold against the rest,
and then bring forth whatever we desire.
بدا لمزاجها بشراً سوياً
وكانت وهي شيطان مريدُ
From their mingling appeared a human, whole and well-formed,
though it had been a rebellious devil.
نفور في أوائله جزوع
وقور في أواخره جليدُ
At first, it is skittish and fearful;
at last, composed and steadfast.
تربّى في جهنم وهو طفل
فأخرج وهو جبار عنيدُ
It was reared in Hell while still a child,
then emerged a mighty, obstinate tyrant.
وصار يقابل النيران جلداً
قويا لا يفرّ ولا يحيدُ
It came to face the fires with endurance,
strong, neither fleeing nor turning aside.
وعالمنا على حدة وفيه
معادننا فرخو أو شديدُ
Our realm stands apart, and within it
our metals are either soft or hard.
وأنواع النحاس وهن عشر
مسمّاة بها كمل العديدُ
The kinds of copper are ten,
each named, completing the full count.
وفي تدبيرها سر عظيم
وخير لا انقطاع له عتيدُ
In their preparation lies a mighty secret,
and a ready good that never runs out.
فكبريت وزرنيخ وملح
وفرّار يفيد ويستفيدُ
Sulfur, arsenic, and salt,
and a fugitive agent that imparts and receives.
يحيط بكله جبل صغير
ومنه معين مائك والصعيدُ
A little mountain encircles it all;
from it come your water’s spring and the earth.
تدبّر بيضة الحكماء منه
فيبدي ما تريد وما تعيدُ
Prepare from it the sages’ egg,
and it will reveal whatever you seek and seek anew.
فدع عنك المعادن فهي لغو
ورمز عن فطنت له بعيدُ
So leave the metals aside—they are empty talk,
and a symbol whose import, if grasped, lies far beyond.
ودبّر معدن الحكماء واصبر
عليه فهوملك لا يبيدُ
Work the sages’ mineral, and be patient
with it: it is a possession that never perishes.
