1. كان الشبابُ هو السرورَ فرمتُهُ

    إذ فاتَ في الدنيا فعزَّ المطلبُ

    Youth was joy itself, and so I desired it;

    once it had passed, the quest for it in this world grew hard.

  2. طَرَبُ الشبابِ هو المؤثّرُ لا الغِنَى

    والكأسُ والوترُ الفصيحُ المُعْجِبُ

    The rapture of youth is what is preferred—not wealth,

    nor the wine-cup, nor the eloquent, expressive string.

  3. أو لا فهذِي كلُّها موجودةٌ

    إلا الشبابَ فما لنا لا نطرَبُ

    Or is it not so? All these are indeed assembled here,

    except for youth—so why, then, are we not enraptured?
