يا طالبا لنهايات العلوم ولم

تحكم مبادئها بالفكر والنظرِ

O seeker of the heights of knowledge though

Its principles you've failed to grasp by thought and sight

رام اطلاعاً على سر الخليقة في

فعل الطبيعة أعمى القلب والبصَرِ

Attempting to uncover nature's mysteries

In what nature does made your heart and vision blind

محضتك النصح لا تعرض لسرهم

من غير خُبر ولا تغترَ بالخبرِ

My advice don't pry into their secrets rashly

Without experience or be fooled by false report

للقوم عرف فمن يفطن له ظفرت

يداه أو لا فلا ينفكّ في خسرِ

The learned have a custom — he who grasps it

His hands gain otherwise he suffers loss assured

فقس لتدرك مكنون العلوم فبال

قياس أطلع أقوم على عبرِ

So reason that you may attain the hidden sciences

By logic gain sound lessons and advice

الأمر في واحد لا غير معتدل

وما سواه فلغو غير ذي ثمرِ

The matter's one, no more, kept moderate

All else is fruitless, bearing no ripe fruit

وإنما أكثروا الأسماء مدهشة

للجاهلين فلا تغترّ وافتكرِ

In truth they multiplied bewildering names

To hoodwink the ignorant so don't be fooled and think

وكل ما ذكروه في معادنهم

لغو وتشبيه مستور بمشتهرِ

All that they told of their elixirs is

Mere metaphor and likeness, commonly obscured

والسر في الروح فاطلبها مطهرة

تناسختها صنوف الخلق في صورِ

The secret's in the spirit purified

Transmigrated through created forms and kinds

ما زال ينقل في الأشباح صورتها

من ذي حياة إلى نبت إلى شجرِ

Still borne from shape to shape its form endures

From one that lives to herb and tree that grows

حتى ارتقت في جبال الإعتدال إلى

كمالها وهو رمز القوم في الحجرِ

Until through ranks of moderation it rose

To full perfection — thus the wise man hints

فيها هباءان منحلاّن قد عقدا

بالبردي شاهق عالٍ ومنحدرِ

With lofty stone combining two fine dews

Congealed with talc white soaring and inclined

مما تحيَّرَ في أرض مقدسة

إن لم يهيّجه حر النار لم يطرِ

Mystifying in some holy ground unmoved

Unless hot fire disturbed it never flies

ميّزهما ثم خذ كلاً على حدة

بلا قذاة ولا شوب ولا كدر

Divide the two then take them separately

Without the least impurity or taint

إلا عوارض روحانية عرضت

بها لطائفُ لا يدركن بالنظرِ

Save spirit accidents that come to grace

Subtleties imperceptible to sight

فَصَعّدِ الأرض في الأثال تضربها

بالنار فهي تُهَبَيها بلا صورِ

Then calcify the earth repeat the process

With fire — it makes them evaporate sans form

كما رأيت صنوف النبت مطلعة

بالماء والشمس أنواعاً من الزهرِ

As you have seen the plants bloom through

The rain and sun — manifold flowers and blooms

من بعد أن تظهر النيران قاهرة

ما كان من وسخ فيها ومن وضرِ

After the conquering fires cleanse

All filth and damage lodging in its form

وجَسِّدِ الروح بالترداد فهو لنا

نار تحلّل ما يبقى من المَدَرِ

Embody thus the spirit — through return

Our fire dissolves all dross that might remain

نوشادر القوم والدهن الذي كتمت

أسماؤه وهو منسوب إلى المررِ

The sages' oil unnamed but understood

As myrrh — the bitter principle its name

وبَيّضِ الثُّفل واجعل لونه يققاً

فهو الرماد وفيه غاية الوطرِ

Whiten the dark and turn it silver white

ثم اجعل الكل في التعفين تتركه

ميقات موسى وقد وافى على قدرِ

The ash it is — perfection of the powers

Then leave it all to putrefy allotting

روح ونفس وجثمان يتمُّ بها

إكسيرنا وعليها بنية البشرِ

The time of Moses till it's cooked and cured

Spirit and soul and body rendered whole

ينحل في الدفن ماء ثم تعقده

فهو الغنى لقليل المال مفتقرِ

Our elixir made — so human beings are formed

Dissolved in death then water recollected

هناك قد تمَّ إكسير البياض لذي

علم بمكنون سر الله في الفطرِ

Abundant wealth for who had little and was poor

There the elixir's perfection was achieved

فكرر العمل المذكور إنَّ ترا

كيب الصناعة أمرغير مختصرِ

By one who knew God's secrets in creation

Repeat the process mentioned — combinations

ألقِ الخميرة في التركيب تودعه ال

تعفين بالزبل عند الدفن في الحفرِ

Of this art complex are not quickly grasped

Insert the ferment in the compound rotting

والحل والدهن دور وهو إن عطفت

منه الأعالي على ما تحتها بدر

It in manure when buried in its hole

And dissolution lifting high the low

وفيه مجرى الطباق السبع حالته

طورا وحالته بالنجم الزهر

Is like the heavens' course around a star

With two lights' motion endlessly until

ولم تزل حركات النيرين إلى

أن تم منها اجتماع الشمس والقمرِ

The sun and moon finally coalesce

This growing that diminishing evermore

يزداد هذا وتفنى هذه أبدا

كاليوم والليل من طول ومن قصرِ

As night and day in length expanding shrinking

All things combined dissolve then recompose

وكل عاد فمنحلٌ ومنعقدٌ

دماً ولحما ففكِّر فيه واعتبرِ

As blood and flesh — consider it reflect

This is the secret of solution hidden

هذا هو السر في الحل الذي كتموا

أظهرته فهو باد غير مستتر

I have revealed it patent not obscure

As for its reddening I have demonstrated

وسر تحميره قد ضربت لكم

في كشفه مثلاً تبيان مختصرِ

Through metaphor a summary explanation

It is the food in liver turned to blood

وهو الغذاء الذي في الكَبد صار دماً

وصار في الثدي مبيضا من الدرر

In breasts changed to pure white pearls

So too your medicine — gentle fire wears it

كذا دواؤك لين النار تلبسه

صبغا تولد فيه ظاهر الأثر

A dye whereby effects clearly emerge

فإن أعدتَ إليه الحلَّ ثانية

والعقد زادك صبغا على القدرِ

If you restore solution once again

And coagulate you'll add unto the dose

والدهن والصبغ رمز غير ما ذهبت

إليه أفهام أهل الجهل والخورِ

Myrrh and saffron dye — not what conjectured

Minds of the ignorant who always lose

والدهن ماء تجن الأرض باطنه

والصبغُ إنشاء خلق فيه منفطرِ

Myrrh is water generating earth's depths

The dye creation's origination in bursts

وهو النحاس بلا ظلِّ فزئبقنا

منه استفاد قتال النار في سقرِ

It is copper sans shade — our quicksilver

Gained it fought fire in hell's deepest pit

فإن صبرتَ على تحميره بحِمى

نار لطيف بلا حرق ولا ضجر

If you've the patience to let it calcine

With gentle fire no burning or distress

أولا فَزَنجرِ نحاسا محرقا وأعِد

عليه صبغ حديد خالص الزبر

First wash and roast the copper leaving it clean

Restore a dye of iron pure and bare

ودهن صفرة بيض فاغمرنَّ به

ما قد علمت وقَطّره علىعَكَرِ

And saffron yolk then soak what you have learned

And drip it on the sediment

حتى إذا صار مثل الماء فارم على

محلوله مثله من فاحم الشعرِ

Till like water made then drip its weight

Again in buzzing reddish dye and test

تجده كالقرمز المحلول يصبغ ما

بَيَّضتَ وزناً بوزن منه فاختبرِ

You'll find it like dissolved purple dyes

What you whitened — weight for weight assay

واطبخ دواءك في رفق فإنّ به

حسن التزاوج من أنثى ومن ذكرِ

Then cook your medicine gently mixed

For fine balance of the sexes' wedding song

والزرع بالماء يزكو وهو يغرقه

إن زدته فأقتصد في الماء واقتصر

Crops thirsting need the rain but flooded

Drown — spare water use the least amount

وقطعك الماء عنه طول مدته

قبل الحصاد فساد فاسقِ في قَدَرِ

Cut off its water long before the harvest

Lest rotting — so pour gently in the pot

وانف الغرائب فالأركان تجمعها

أخوة في فتاء السن والكبرِ

Strange things reject — the elements together

Are siblings in their youth and aging hoar

قد أنشئت أربعا منواحد حدث

في آخر العمر شيخ وهو في الصغرِ

I've generated four out of the one

Grown old while young still in its tender shoots

ولا تلائم روح غير جثتها

يوما وفي ذلكم ذكرى لمدّكرِ

Nor can a spirit a form long forsake

And there's a memento for the thinker sage

ولاتغرنّك الأسماء فهي على آل

ألوان تظهر في أعقابها الأخرِ

Let not names confuse for upon diverse

Guises backgrounds come forth in future days

وإن ظفرت بعقد الإنفصال له

فذاك والله عندي غاية الظفرِ

If you gain the secret of division

That to me is triumph's utmost edge

وإن وقفت على سر الخميرة لم

تحتج إلى العود فيها مدة العمرِ

If you uncover the ferment's arcana

You'll need no more forever after this

فاصبر وفكر ولا تضجر لطول مدى

فالصبر مفتاح قتل قفل الحادث العسرِ

So be patient reflect never despair

Though slow — patience slays the lock of hardship's prison

وإن هُديتَ إلى مكنون سرهم

فأحرز لسانك لا تحمل على غررِ

If guided to their secret treasure-house

Restrain your tongue don't hawk it cheap and low

وإن رُزقتَ فلا تأسف على أحد

بالفضل واحذر مصير البغي والبطرِ

If graced don't envy others fortune's gifts

Beware the fate of tyranny and sin

واعمل لعقباك فالدنيا بأجمعها

ما حزت فاغتنم الإحسان وادخر

Act for your progeny — this world entirely

Has not deserved — so favor and amass good deeds
