1. نصيحُكما فيما يقولُ مُريبُ

    وشأنُكما في اللائمينَ عجيبُ

    Your advice regarding what the skeptic says is strange,

    And your attitude towards blamers is wondrous.

  2. وإن الذي أسرفْتُما في ملامِهِ

    بهِ من قِراعِ الحادثاتِ نُدوبُ

    Indeed, the one whose excesses you have blamed

    Bears the scars of fate's blows.

  3. فما سَمْعُه للعاذِلاتِ بعُرضةٍ

    ولا قلبُه للظاعنينَ جَنِيبُ

    His hearing is not prone to blamers,

    Nor is his heart amenable to detractors.

  4. إِذا ما أتيتُ الغَوْرَ غورَ تِهامة

    تطَلَّعَ نحوي كاشِحٌ ورقيبُ

    When I come to the valley of Tihama,

    A vigilant watcher looks towards me.

  5. يقولون مَنْ هذا الغريبُ وما لَهُ

    وفِيمَ أتانا والغريبُ مُريبُ

    They say "Who is this stranger, what is his business,

    And why has he come while strangers are suspect?"

  6. غَدا في بُيوتِ الحي ينشُدُ نِضْوَهُ

    ونحن نرى أَنَّ المُضِلَّ كَذُوبُ

    Tomorrow he will wander the dwellings reciting verse

    While we see the misguided as liars.

  7. وهل أنا إلا ناشِدٌ في بُيوتِهم

    فؤاداً به مما يُجِنُّ ندوبُ

    And who am I but a bard in their abodes

    With a heart afflicted by what causes wounds.

  8. وماذا عليهم أنْ يُلِمَّ بأرضهمْ

    أخو حاجةٍ نائي المزارِ غريبُ

    What is it to them if a brother in need,

    Far from his shrine, wanders their land a stranger?

  9. وما راعَهمْ إلا شمائلُ ماجدٍ

    طَروبٍ أَلا إنَّ الكريمَ طروبُ

    They were not deterred by the virtues of Majid,

    How excellent, the noble are indeed excellent!

  10. ولو نامَ بعضُ الحَيِّ أو غابَ ليلةً

    لقرَّتْ عيونٌ واطمأنَّ جُنوبُ

    If some of the clan slept or was absent a night,

    Eyes would well up and chests would clench.

  11. خليليَّ بالجَرْعاءِ من أيمَن الحَمى

    هل الجزعُ مرهومُ الرياضِ مَصُوبُ

    My friend, be patient despite the wounds,

    Is anguish forbidden on riverbanks?

  12. وهل نطفةٌ زرقاءُ ينقشها الصَّبَا

    هنالك سَلسالُ المذاق شَروبُ

    Can a blue pearl etched by the morning breeze

    There be anything but the sweetest wine?

  13. فعهدي به والدهرُ أغيَدُ والهَوى

    بماء صِباهُ والزمانُ قَشِيبُ

    My promise to him - times are fruitful and passion

    Is but watered saplings and old age frost.

  14. وبالسَّفحِ مَوْشِيُّ الحدائقِ آهلٌ

    وبالجِزْع مَوْلِيُّ الرياض غريبُ

    At the foothills, frequenter of gardens settled,

    In the trunk, companion of meadows a stranger.

  15. بأبطحَ مِعْشابٍ كأن نسيمَهُ

    ثناءٌ لمجدِ المُلْكِ فيه نصيبُ

    On a prairie, its breeze as if

    Praise for the glory of kings in which he has a share.

  16. هو الأزهرُ الوضَّاحُ أَمّا مَهزُّه

    فلَدْنٌ وأمّا عُودهُ فصليبُ

    He is the brightest blossom, his bent stature

    Humility, and his fragrance the cross.

  17. ذَهوبٌ من العلياءِ في كلِّ مذهبٍ

    وَهوبٌ لما يحوي عِداهُ نَهوبُ

    Gold from the lofty, in every doctrine,

    Tempest, for what opposes him is destruction.

  18. يُشَيِّعُه في ما يرومُ فُؤادُه

    إِذا خَانَ آراءَ الرِّجالِ قُلوبُ

    If hearts betray the views of men,

    He accompanies his heart wherever it desires.

  19. منوعٌ لأطراف الممالك حافظٌ

    جَمُوعٌ لأشتاتِ العَلاءِ كَسُوبُ

    Protector of far reaches of realms, gatherer

    Of the cream of the lofty, flowing hair.

  20. أخو الحَزْمِ أَمّا الغورُ منه فإنَّه

    بعيدٌ وأَمّا المستقَى فقريبُ

    Brother of resolve - distance is remote from him

    While the watershed is near.

  21. يَنوبُ عن الأنواءِ فيضُ يمينهِ

    ويُغني عن البيضاء حين تغيبُ

    The outpouring of his right hand takes the place

    Of the Pleiades when it sets.

  22. ويرفَضُّ نُجْحَاً وعدُه لعُفَاتِه

    وبعضُهمُ في ما يقولُ خَلوبُ

    His promise brings success to his dependents

    While some in their speech are deceitful.

  23. مُدَبِّرُ مُلكٍ لا تني عَزَماتُه

    إِذا ما ترامتْ بالخُطوبِ خُطُوبُ

    Manager of a kingdom whose resolve cannot tire

    When troubles upon troubles come.

  24. وحامِي ذمارٍ لا تزالُ جِيادُه

    تحومُ على ثَغْر العِدَى وتلوبُ

    Protector of a regime whose steeds

    Circle the frontier of foes and attack.

  25. بهِ انتعش المُلكُ المُضاعُ وأقبلتْ

    توائبُه بعدَ الفواتِ تثوبُ

    Through him the weakened kingdom grew strong again

    And its repentance after neglect returned.

  26. أقامَ عمودَ المُلك بالشرق وانثنى

    إِلى الغربِ نَاءٍ حيثُ كان قَريبُ

    He erected the pillar of the kingdom in the east

    And inclined to the nearby west.

  27. ولما سما للبغي ثانِيَ عِطْفِه

    طَموعٌ لأقصَى ما يُرامُ طَلوبُ

    When ambition called him to its side a second time,

    Aspiring to the utmost of desires.

  28. وضَمَّ إِلى ظِلِّ اللواء عصابةً

    مقاحيمَ تُدعَى باسمه فتُجيبُ

    And he gathered under the banner's shade a band

    Called by his name who would respond.

  29. وضاعتْ حقوقُ المُلك إِلّا أقلَّها

    وكادتْ ظُنونُ الأولياءِ تَخِيبُ

    The rights of the kingdom were squandered except a few

    And the hopes of loyalists almost dashed.

  30. وأيقظَ أبناءُ الضَّلالةِ فتنةً

    تهالَكَ فيها مُخطِئٌ ومُصيبُ

    The sons of misguidance awakened a strife

    Where the mistaken and the correct perished together.

  31. أُتِيحَ لها شَزْرُ المريرةِ مُقْدِمٌ

    على الهَول مصحوبُ الجَنانِ مَهيبُ

    It was facilitated for them the bitter brew

    Fearsome, accompanied by hellish flames.

  32. سَرَى يطردُ الجُرْدَ العِتاقَ سواهِماً

    ترامَى بها بعدَ السُهوبِ سُهوبُ

    It flowed expelling the loyal troops with arrows -

    Dune upon dune from the plateau.

  33. موارِقُ تمتاحُ الغبارَ وقد طَوى

    شمائلَها طَيَّ الرداءِ لغُوبُ

    Meteors that swallow the dust which

    Their mantles of darkness envelop.

  34. إِذا ما لبسنَ الليلَ طفلاً خلعْنَهُ

    عليه ووَخْطُ الصُبحِ فيه مشيبُ

    When the night clothed them like infants they stripped it

    Off - the dawn wounds on them turning white.

  35. لها مصَّةُ الماء القَراحِ ونشطةٌ

    من الروض والمرعَى أعمُّ خصيبُ

    They have the virility of lively water and vitality

    From the meadows - most fertile pasture.

  36. يؤُمُّ بها أرضَ العراق مُشَاوِرٌ

    وقد عاثَ في السَّرْحِ المسَيَّبِ ذيبُ

    With them he counseled the land of Iraq

    After ravaging the overgrown wilderness.

  37. هجمنَ عليها بالقنابل والقَنَا

    تَمُورُ على أكتافهن كعُوبُ

    They attacked with cannonballs and spears

    Peacocks atop their shoulders.

  38. تعاسلنَ أطراف القُنيّ كأنها

    جَرادٌ زهتها بالعَشِيِّ جَنُوبُ

    They skirmished on the flanks of the cannons

    Like locusts made drunk by the evening breeze.

  39. وفي سرعانِ الخيل رائِدُ نُصْرةٍ

    له موطِيٌء أينَ استرادَ عَشيبُ

    A leader of victory hastens among the steeds -

    His mount rested wherever it found grass.

  40. يَرُدُّ دبيبَ المارقين بوثبةٍ

    وهل يتساوى وثبةٌ ودَبيبُ

    He repels the creeping of the rebels with a leap -

    Can a creeping equal a leap?

  41. أمرَّ لهم عقدَ المكيدةِ حازمٌ

    بصيرُ بأدواءِ الخُطوب طبيبُ

    A steadfast planner unraveled their scheme,

    A skilled physician of tribulations.

  42. تنام العِدَى من كيدهِ وهو ساهرٌ

    وتفتُرُ عمَّا هَبَّ وهو دَؤُوبُ

    Enmity sleeps because of his plot while he is awake

    And falters from his resolve while he is steadfast.

  43. إِذا أضمروا كيداً تدلَّى عليهم

    عليمٌ بأسرارِ الغُيوب لَبيبُ

    When they secretly scheme he closely observes them,

    Learned in the secrets of hearts, discerning.

  44. وما أُتِيَ المغرورُ فيمن برى له

    من الحزمِ لولا ما جَناهُ شَعُوبُ

    The deluded one among those he showed virtue

    Would not have been brought low except for the masses.

  45. أرادَ وقد حاقَ الشقاءُ بجدِّهِ

    مغالبةَ الأقدارِ وهي غلوبُ

    He intended - though fortune had abandoned his ancestors -

    To challenge fate, but it was unassailable.

  46. ولم يكن المقدارُ فيما علمْتُهُ

    لِيُسْعَدَ عبداً أوبقَتْهُ ذُنوبُ

    Destiny, from what I knew, did not intend

    To bring good fortune to a servant or evil deeds make wretched.

  47. سرى نحوَهُ الحَيْنُ المُتاحُ ودونَهُ

    بِساطٌ لأيدي اليَعْمُلاتِ رحيبُ

    Fate's time came to him while his ambition

    Had a blood stained sword.

  48. وعاجله المقدارُ من دون بغيه

    وللبغي سيفٌ بالدماءِ خَضِيبُ

    He did not know glory had been his cloak

    Until it slipped and he was stripped.

  49. ولم يَدْرِ أَنَّ العزَّ كان رِداؤُهُ

    مُعَاراً إِلى أن خَرَّ وهو سليبُ

    I swear had it not been for your ancestor's fortune

    Heads would have rolled and chests bled.

  50. وأُقسِمُ لولا يُمْنُ جَدِّك قُطِّعَتْ

    رِقابٌ وعُلَّتْ بالدماءِ جُيوبُ

    It was the great deluge - it rose and withdrew

    By your judgment when it engulfed hearts.

  51. هي الغمرةُ العظمى تجلَّتْ وأقلعتْ

    برأيكَ إِذْ عمَّ القلوبَ وجيبُ

    Its eradication of wickedness crumbled

    When it raged, thrust, and shot arrows.

  52. تقوض إِقلاعَ الجَهام فسادها

    وقد كانَ يَهْمي وَدْقُهُ ويصُوبُ

    I speak to you of the glory of the kingdom in truthful words

    While a youth's lies in his tales are folly.

  53. أبُثُّكَ مجدَ المُلْكِ قولةَ صادقٍ

    وكِذْبُ الفَتَى فيما يُحَدِّثُ حوبُ

    I see myself beyond reproach or contentment in adversity,

    Nor pleased at crises when they come.

  54. أُراني لَقَىً لا أُنْتَضَى لِمُلِمَّةٍ

    ولا أُرتَضَى للخطب حين ينُوبُ

    My virtue prevents me from the goal

    To which an ignorant man aspires and attains.

  55. يُثَبِّطنِي فضلي عن الغاية التي

    يَخِفُّ إِليها جاهلٌ فيُصِيْبُ

    My life is too short to obtain even a morsel

    Of glory - savoring it would be sweet.

  56. ويقصُرُ باعي أنْ ينالَ شظيّةً

    من العِزِّ يزكو نَيْلُها ويَطيبُ

    A man's ruin is that no enemy fears his might

    Nor does a loved one hope for his aid.

  57. وهُلْكُ الفتى أن لا يُساءَ بسطوهِ

    عدوٌ ولا يرجُو جَداهُ حبيبُ

    So grant me a day from you whose mention

    Spreads - you are the hope of nobles.

  58. فهَبْ ليَ يوماً منك يُنْشَرُ ذِكْرُهُ

    فأنتَ لما يرجو العُفاةُ وهوبُ

    Live in peace forever, for your existence

    Is beauty for the age and goodness.

  59. وعِشْ سالماً طولَ الزمان فإِنما

    بقاؤك زيَنٌ للزمان وطِيبُ

    For your star loftiness in the horizon of grandeur

    And for the wind in the atmosphere gusts.

  60. لنجمكَ في أفقِ المكارم رفعةٌ

    وللريح في جوّ العلاءِ هُبوبُ
