  1. قل لمن يطلب الحجر

    هل أتى العلم والنظر

    Tell those who seek the stone

    Have knowledge and insight come

  2. ليس والله ماؤنا

    من دم لا ولا شعر

    By no means, by Allah, is our water

    Of blood, neither hair

  3. لا ولا البيض والمَنى

    لا ولا البول والقذر

    Nor eggs and semen

    Nor urine and filth

  4. لا ولا سائر المعا

    دن أعني بها المَدَر

    Nor any other bodily fluids

    I mean thereby the vulgar

  5. لا ولانابت ولا

    حيوان وذي ثمر

    Neither plants nor

    Fruits and vegetation

  6. لا ولا ملحة العقا

    ب التي شانها الكدر

    Nor the salty sweat

    That causes fatigue

  7. فاطلبوا الملح باجتها

    د ولو كان في سقر

    Seek salt with effort

    Even if it's in Hell

  8. وانخلوه فياله

    إن ظفرتم به ظفر

    Refine it, O eminent

    If you obtain it, you've succeeded

  9. وإذا ما فهمتم

    وتحققتم الخبر

    And when you understand

    And ascertain the truth

  10. فهو شمس النهار لا

    شك فيها ولا أشر

    It's the sun of daytime, no

    Doubt in it or harm

  11. وهو بدر الدجى إذا

    لم يشب كنهه كدر

    It's the full moon of night when

    Its essence is pure, not turbid

  12. يشبه الزعفران في ال

    لون والصمغ في الشجر

    It resembles saffron in

    Color and gum in trees

  13. أحسنوا الخلط بعده

    قد فهمتم بلا ضجر

    Mix it well afterwards

    You've understood without boredom

  14. سكنّوا الجمع قبة

    من زجاج بلا بصر

    Settle the mixture in a dome

    Of glass without flaw

  15. قد حوت خير عنصر

    حجر ليس بالحجر

    It contains the best elixir

    A stone, yet no stone

  16. صخرة العلم هذه

    وهو كنّ لمن خبر

    The rock of knowledge this

    It's an ingot for the expert

  17. وهو البيت بيتهم

    فافهموا يا أولي النظر

    It's their House, their home

    Understand, O wise

  18. وهو الرأس عندهم

    في البرابي لمن نظر

    It's their Head, for those who saw

    In the temples, for the observer

  19. وهو مغنيسياهم

    واسمه صورة الصور

    It's their magnetism

    Its name is Form of forms

  20. وهو البيض عندهم

    وبه خالد خبر

    It's their egg, thereby

    Khalid was eternalized

  21. وهو تنين رمزهم

    وبه زوسم شهر

    It's their dragon symbol

    Thereby Zeus was famed

  22. وهو برباة هرمس

    ويسمى بذي الغير

    It's Hermes'Ferba

  23. وهو سبع بحفرة

    حين مرقونس احتضر

    It's the seven in the ditch

    When Morquenos perished

  24. وادرسوا الكتب كتبهم

    إنما أحسنوا النظر

    Study their books, the books

    Indeed, observe well

  25. فجميع الذي تريد

    دونه فهو مستطر

    All that you wish for

    Is registered therein

  26. مثلكم كنت أولاً

    أمزح الصفو بالكدر

    Like you, I was joking

    Defiling the pure with the turbid

  27. وأرى كل ناقص

    كاملاً من عمى البصر

    And saw each flawed thing

    As perfect, from blindness

  28. لم ازل هكذا إلى

    أن بدا الحق واشتهر

    I remained thus until

    The truth appeared and spread

  29. فإذا الأمر واحد

    ليس شيء سوى الحجر

    So that the matter is one

    Nothing but the stone

  30. صمغة الشمس هذه

    جسد الصمغة القمر

    Gum of the sun this

    Body of the lunar gum

  31. يشبه الشمع ذوبه

    وإذا سال كالمطر

    Resembling melted wax

    Flowing like rain when it pours

  32. وإذا طال كالسحا

    ب والكنار إن قطر

    And like mercury if it flows for long

    This is a gift to you

  33. هذه تحفة إلي

    ك فخذها ولا وزر

    Take it and no burden

    Reflect on its lines

  34. وتدبّر سطورها

    فبها الحق مستطر

    For the truth is registered

    The finest word has appeared

  35. أجمل القول قد بدا

    أجمل السرّ قد ظهر

    The finest mystery revealed

    And the precious mine laid bare

  36. وافصد المعدن الكري

    م مرامي ذوي النظر

    For the keen observers
