O garden of beauty, if the clouds are stingy
In watering you, my pouring tears will suffice.
My tears have watered your soil as long as they flowed,
And none but you was sprinkled by my sighs.
The gazelles grazing your plants in the morning
Are loyal visitors tending your beauty.
A gentle morning breeze visited me at dawn,
Stirring me though illness was not stirred.
You revived dying embers leaving only
A spark, and when you blew on it, it blazed.
A secret stance in the gardens of night,
Safe from slanderers, no necks were bent.
You came to me after midnight with sweet lips
Like musk-sealed wine whose seal kisses opened.
As if your eyelids were drunk with the wine
Of your saliva when your neck bent.
Surrounded by short-stepped lambs
Whose feet are dyed black in tar.
We passed the night while piety and devotion
Kept watch, though our passion belied our faith.
Then we embraced, though nothing clung to me
Except chastity. Restore me from my stupor!
