A generous vine whose roots are in the soil
Far from uprooting and destruction
A noble one whose green branches
Cling closely, nearer and nearer
It drinks freely from the depths of the earth
Letting its tendrils spread freely, unconstrained
When sated with water, it yields
Closing its petals on pollinating insects
And if dew covers its lower parts
It makes the top more fertile, not barren
Pollinated by the wind, facing east and west
And the sun, rising and setting
It yielded fruit for its family after
Living barren for so long
And bore bunches belonging
To a father nobler than any father
She clothed it in the green of her leaves
Nourished by sweet milk
And the sun inhabited it with his making
Rising here and rising there
So it blossomed and produced wonders
Amazing the admiring beholder
And changed the green of its bunches
To red, then brown, then wheaten
It borrowed water and gave freely
Flowing like a blazing torch
And gently yielded clusters
Dyed with its gilded hue
So the blonde produced from its lineage
Is the offspring of that fawn parent
You can see amid its bunches
Green glimmering like fireflies
Its colors various, its kinds
Consonant, well-arranged
So many greens and yellows!
Whole and untouched by boredom
Some dark as the wing of night
Others bright, gleaming like stars
As if its berries carried
Falcons' anklets on their claws
Two steeds from Rum and Africa grown
In a green paradise for them to graze
Sweeter here as fruit or forbidden
In its vine or cup, sweeter
