1. أهابَ به داعي الهَوى فأجابا

    وعاودَهُ نكسُ الصّبَا فتصَابَى

    The call of passion appealed to him, so he responded,

    And the setback of youth made him persevere,

  2. وأدَّاهُ من بعدِ التجارب رأيُهُ

    إِلى أن عصَى حُكْمَ الحِجَى فتغابَى

    His experience later guided his opinion,

    Until he disobeyed the rule of reason and became estranged,

  3. وطابَ له عن غِرَّةِ العيشِ أَرْيُهُ

    وقد ذاقَ من طعمِ التجارب صَابَا

    His view became pleasant without the excitement of life,

    And he had already tasted the flavor of experience, good and bad,

  4. وحَلَّ عِقَالَ العَقْلِ عندَ يَدِ الهَوى

    فسامَ كما شاء الغرامُ وسَابَا

    He released the reins of reason to passion,

    So he went ahead as love desired, unperturbed,

  5. وشَام بُرَيْقَاً بالحِمى شاقَ لَمْعُهُ

    رفاقاً وخيلاً بالغُويرِ عِرَابَا

    His gaze shone with zeal, its brilliance piercing

    Through his comrades and horses in the dark night,

  6. تناعس للأيقاظ فوقَ رِحالِهم

    فمدّوا عُيوناً نحوَهُ ورِقَابَا

    They were sleeping on their mounts when it awoke them,

    So they lifted their eyes and necks toward it,

  7. فكم دونَ ذاك البرق من متجلِّدٍ

    يُكاتمُ أسرارَ الغَرامِ صحَابَا

    How many men of fortitude beneath that lightning

    Conceal the secrets of passion, companions together,

  8. وآخرَ نمّامِ الجفونِ زفيرهُ

    يشُقُّ وراءَ السابريِّ حِجابَا

    While another, the blink of whose eyes complains,

    Rends the veil behind the departing travelers,

  9. ومن مُقْصِرٍ يصمي حَماطةَ قلبهِ

    صوائبُ وُطْفٌ ما كُسِينَ لُغَابَا

    And one whose heart cowers, though his exterior boasts,

    Misfortunes and hardships he has never known,

  10. يُردّدُ طرفا في صَرى الدمع سابحاً

    ويَرقِي فُؤاداً بالعَزاء مُصَابَا

    Repeating a gaze in the field of tears swimming

    And a heart rising with consolation afflicted,

  11. وأغيدَ لو خاصرتَهُ في سُجوفِه

    لردَّ مشيبَ العارضَيْنِ شَبابَا

    If you had probed him in his innermost being,

    He would restore the youth of his temples,

  12. أغنَّ إِذا استمليتَ وحيَ جُفونِه

    درسْنَ من السحرِ المبينِ كِتابَا

    If you had eavesdropped on the inspiration of his eyes,

    You would have studied the evident sorcery in a book,

  13. فيا رُفقة تُزجِي الرِكابَ طلائحاً

    سقَتْهَا الغوادِي رُفقةً ورِكابَا

    O company who makes the riders depart in haste

    Quenched by the valleys, company and riders alike,

  14. حَدا بِهِمُ حادي الغرامِ فَيَمَّمُوا

    مساقِطَ مُزْنٍ بالأباطحِ صابَا

    The guide of passion led them, so they inclined

    Toward the plains covered with soft sand,

  15. ولو قايَسُوا بالمُزْنِ عيني لصادفوا

    دُموعيَ أندى العارضين سَحابَا

    Had they compared themselves to the sand dunes

    They would have found my tears more prolific than the clouds,

  16. يَؤُمّونَ أرضاً بالبِطَاحِ أريضَةً

    وزُرقَ حمامٍ بالعُذَيبِ عِذَابَا

    Longing for a land in the low ground, pleasant,

    With turtledoves in the aromatics—torment,

  17. ومرهومةً مرقومةً عُنِيَتْ بها

    صَناع كستْ وجهَ السماء نِقَابَا

    A scorched, wounded land neglected by them,

    Makers who veiled the face of the sky,

  18. يلينُ لها قلبُ الهجير إِذا قَسا

    بسُقْيا جُفونٍ ما يَزَلْنَ رِطَابَا

    The lonely stranger's heart softens toward it when dry

    With shedding tears that do not cease flowing,

  19. وتهدي إليها في النسيمِ إِذا سرَى

    لطائمُ تَحوي عنبراً ومَلابَا

    The gentle breezes coming to it when they blow

    Bring scents and spices in their midst,

  20. لك اللّه إني ناشدٌ كَبِداً بها

    صُدوعٌ فهل من مُنْشِدٍ فيُثَابَا

    By God, I implore a heart with sorrows in it—

    Are there any sympathizers to be rewarded?

  21. وهل عندكم صبرٌ جميلٌ فتعمرُوا

    فُؤاداً من الصبرِ الجميلِ خرابَا

    Is there beautiful patience in you to rebuild

    A heart ruined by beautiful patience?

  22. وهل فيكمُ راقٍ فيشفي برُقْيَةٍ

    لديغَ هوىَ يرجُو لديهِ ثَوابَا

    Is there one who heals the bite of my passion's sting

    Hoping for its reward from the Healer?

  23. وهل نظرةٌ عجلَى يُريكَ اختلاسُها

    غليلَ مُعَنَّى لا يذوقُ شَرابَا

    Is there a hasty glance whose theft

    Relieves one suffering, who tastes no drink?

  24. أخادعُ نفسِي بالسؤالِ تعَلُّلاً

    وإن لم تردُّوا للسؤالِ جَوابَا

    I fool myself with questions, excusing myself,

    Though you give no answers to my questions,

  25. وما الرأيُ إلّا الهجرُ لو أنَّ مُسْعِداً

    من الصبرِ إذ يُدعَى إليهِ أجابَا

    What is opinion but estrangement, if Mis'ad

    Had answered its call to patience?

  26. إِذا ما الهَوى استولَى على الرأي لم يدعْ

    لصاحبهِ في ما يراهُ صَوابَا

    When passion takes hold of opinion, it leaves

    Its owner no sound judgment of what he sees,

  27. مَلِلْتُ ثَوائي بالعراقِ وملَّني

    رفاقي وكانوا بالعراق طِرابَا

    I have wearied of my abode in Iraq, and my friends there

    Have wearied me, though they were most companionable,

  28. وأَنفقتُ من عُمْرِي وذاتِ يدي بها

    بضائِعَ لم أملِكْ لهُنَّ حسابَا

    I spent there my life and hand’s yield,

    Goods whose account I do not possess,

  29. وزاحمت مهري والمهنَّدَ في الغِنَى

    فلم أُبْقِ إلّا مِقوداً وقِرابَا

    I competed with Mehri and Muhannad in wealth

    Until I remained only with a cord and water skin,

  30. وأبْلَى بها الجُردُ العِتاقُ أجِلَّةً

    عليهنَّ والصحبُ الكرامُ ثِيابَا

    The noble steeds and garments there wore out

    Worn by my noble companions,

  31. وفارقَنِي أهلُ الصَّفاءِ تبرُّماً

    بشَحْطِ نوىً شابوا عليه وشَابَا

    Those of pure character parted from me in displeasure

    At my ambergris—they deemed it foul and became estranged,

  32. فلا زائرٌ يَغشَى جنابي لحاجةٍ

    ولا أنا أغشَى ما أقمتُ جَنابَا

    No visitor enters my presence for a purpose,

    Nor do I enter what dwelling I established,

  33. ولا موقِدٌ ناري بعلياءَ للقِرَى

    ولا رافعٌ لي بالعَراء قِبابَا

    No fire of mine in the highlands lights the homesteads,

    Nor one who pitches a tent for me in the wild,

  34. إِذا قلتُ إني قد ظفِرتُ بصاحبٍ

    سكنتُ إليه خاننِي وأرابَا

    When I say, “I have found a companion,”

    He proves false when I draw near and eludes me,

  35. أُقلِّبُ عيني لا أرى غيرَ صاحبٍ

    ظننتُ به الظَّنَّ الجميلَ فخابَا

    I turn my eyes and see none but a companion

    I deemed sincere—but he failed me,

  36. وكيف ثَوائي بالعراق وقد غَدا

    عليّ بها رَوْحُ النسيم عَذابَا

    How can I remain in Iraq when its soft breeze

    Has become torment for me there?

  37. هو الربعُ لم يُخْلَق بنوه أعزَّةً

    كِراماً ولم تَنبُتْ قناهُ صلابَا

    It is a land whose people were not created most noble

    Or generous, and whose roots did not grow firm,

  38. ولا طرقت أُمُّ الحفاظِ بماجدٍ

    ولا حضَنَتْ ظِئرُ العفافِ كِعابَا

    The mother of virtues did not bring renown there with glory

    Nor did the breast of chastity nurture heroes,

  39. بنو الغَدْرِ لما فتَّشَ البحثُ عنهم

    أراكَ وميضَاً خُلَّباً وسَرابَا

    Seekers of them, when research examined them,

    Showed you a cowering fox and wolves,

  40. متى ما نَبَا دهرٌ نَبَوا وتصَّرفُوا

    على حالتَيْه جَيْئَةً وذَهابَا

    If you were with them when events exposed

    Their foul nature, they were effeminate and cowardly,

  41. معاشرُ لو طابَ الثرى في بلادِهم

    زكا عندَهم غرسُ الجميلِ وطابَا

    I leave them without regret at parting from them

    Or inclination toward Iraq to return,

  42. مناكِيدُ تأبَى أن تجودَ لِقاحُهم

    بِدَرِّ بَكِيٍّ أو تُشَدّ عِصابَا

    Strange that the caliphate has not seen

    My right to be rewarded or requited,

  43. إِذا استخبَر المرءُ التجاربَ عنهمُ

    أرتْهُ بِهاماً رُتَّعاً وذِئَابَا

    Nor heeded my long advice and service—

    That I risk or tame adversity—

  44. إِذا كنتَ عند الحادثاتِ وقد عرتْ

    مِجَنّاً لهم كانوا قَناً وحِرابَا

    By my life, I surely gave it sincere advice,

    Expending my capacity, but it was spurned,

  45. أُفارقُهم لا آسفاً لفراقِهمْ

    ولا مؤْثِراً نحو العراق إيابَا

    Would that my advice were deceit and obedience

    Hypocrisy, my loyalty in devotion false,

  46. فيا عجباً حتى الخلافةُ ما رأتْ

    لحقِّيَ أن أُجْزَى به وأُثَابَا

    Just as my hopes became delusions and service

    Futile, exertion disappointment and confusion,

  47. ولم تَرْعَ لي نُصْحِي القديمَ وخدمتِي

    أخوضُ غِماراً أو أروضُ صِعابَا

    Would that I had joined a company there

    Whom I left angry at me, provoked,

  48. لَعمري لَقَدْ ماحضتُها النُّصحَ باذلاً

    لوُسعي وقد رُدَّتْ إليَّ منابَا

    Is Zureiq, who did not fear my reproach,

    Apprehensive of blame? The vile fear no reproach!

  49. فيا ليت نُصحي كان غِشَّاً وطاعتي

    نفاقاً وصِدقي في الولاء خِلابَا

    He was stubborn toward me, turning a blind eye,

    Fearing no piercing arrows of sharp rebuke,

  50. كما صار آمالي غُروراً وخدمتي

    هباءً وسعيي خيبةً وتَبابَا

    I remained true to a pact between us, between stations in Egypt—

    Discourse—and had he been attributed truth,

  51. ويا ليتني دامجتُ فيه معاشراً

    تركتهُمُ شُوْسَاً عليَّ غِضَابَا

    The claws of eagles would have clung

    To his limbs as carrion—does he aspire

  52. أليس زُرَيقٌ لم يخَفْ أن أمضَّهُ

    عتاباً وهل يخشَى اللئيمُ عتابَا

    To the loyalty of the Commander of the Faithful with a claim

    So patently false? By my life!

  53. تصاممَ عنِّي أو تعامَى ولم يخَفْ

    سِهاماً من العَتْبِ الممِضِّ صِيَابَا

    I did not leave my land willingly at all,

    Nor was my soul content without it as refuge,

  54. وفَيْتُ بعهدٍ كان بيني وبينَهُ

    وبينَ مَقاماتٍ بمصرَ خطابَا

    But the burdens of authority jolted

    My mount, and fate brings tribulations,

  55. ولو صَحَّ ما يُعزى إليه لحلَّقتْ

    بأشلائه رُبْدُ النُّسورِ سِغَابَا

    I attend to one matter while the nights return me,

    I gather myself up while events disperse me,

  56. وكيف يُرَجِّي من يكونُ ادِّعَاؤُهُ

    وَلاءَ أميرِ المؤمنين كِذابَا

    May God water its plains when the scent of its breezes

    Has perfumed them, and the shade of windswept trees melts away,

  57. لعمريَ ما فارقتُ ربعيَ عن قِلىً

    ولا رَضيَتْ نفسي سواهُ مَآبَا

    May He prosper its land while the valleys are barren,

    Scarce to saturate its soil,

  58. ولكنْ تكاليفُ السيادةِ جَعْجَعَتْ

    برحلي ودهرٌ بالحوادثِ رَابَا

    May He make melodious its song, sweet its water,

    Spacious its horizons for visitors,

  59. أهُمُّ بأمرٍ والليالي تردُّنِي

    وأجمعُ شملي والحوادثُ تابَى

    Beautiful its dwellings amidst it and homes around it,

    Fertile its basins and plateaus,

  60. سقَى اللّه جَيَّا ما أرقَّ نسيمهَا

    إِذا الظِلُّ من لفحِ الهواجرِ ذابَا

    May God ordain relief after absence

    And conclude with favor, opening a door!

  61. وأندى ثراها والغوادي شحيحةٌ

    بصوبِ حَياها أن تبلَّ تُرابَا

  62. وأطيبَ مغناها وأعذبَ ماءَها

    وأفيحَها للطارقينَ رِحابَا

  63. وأبهى رِباعاً وسْطَها ومنازلاً

    وأزكى صُحوناً حولَها وهِضَابَا

  64. عسى اللّه يقضي أوبةً بعد غيبةٍ

    ويختِمُ بالحُسنَى ويفتحُ بابَا
