And I am a rider urging my steed, hurling
Myself and my soul into perils this year,
That I may gain wealth or attain riches
From God who suffices me against the vice regents.
Lest the base world with its trifles seduce me
As it seduced the doomed and the defiant one.
So my Lord, when my death hour arrives, let there be
No steed with outfit aloft to bear my coffin.
But let me die a martyr and hero, and a terror
To them in a valley of the land which terrifies.
Bands of diverse men made one by the guidance of God,
Descending at places of pause and waiting.
When they leave their world, they leave harm too
And attain the promise made in the Scriptures.
Then let me die a victim and let my bosom be thrown by
The winds into a desolate place amid storms.
And let my grave be the belly of an eagle
Whose abode is the air, in a pairing eagle.
