1. شَثَّ شعَبُ الحَيِّ التِئام

    وَشَجاكَ الرَبعُ رَبعُ المُقام

    The wandering tribe rejoined

    And the place welcomed you, a place of sojourn

  2. حَسَرَت عَنهُ الرِياحُ فَأَبدَت

    مُنتَأىً كَالقَروِ رَهنَ اِنثِلام

    The winds uncovered it, revealing

    A secluded refuge, like the dark nuclei of pearls

  3. وَخَصيفَ اللَونِ جادَت بِهِ مَرخَةٌ

    مِن مُخدَجٍ أَو تَمام

    Autumn's foliage bestowed upon it a dress

    Of fine, soft cloth or completion

  4. بَينَ أَظآرٍ بِمَظلومَةٍ

    كَسَراةِ الساقِ ساقِ الحَمام

    Amid ruins with oppression

    Like partridges’ anklets, anklets of doves

  5. مَنزِلاً كانَ لَنا مَرَّةً

    وَطَناً نَحتَلُّهُ كُلَّ عام

    It was once a dwelling for us

    A home we occupy every year

  6. كَم بِهِ مِن مَكءِ وَحشِيَّةٍ

    قيضَ في مُنتَثَلٍ أَو شِيام

    How much wildness and desolation in it

    Were contained in a valley or plateau

  7. إِنَّما ذِكرُكَ ما قَد مَضى

    ضَلَّةٌ مِثلُ حَديثِ المَنام

    Your memory of what is past

    Is like a dream’s conversation

  8. حَبَّذا الزَورُ لا يُرى

    مِنهُ إِلّا لَمحَةٌ عَن لِمام

    How excellent is visiting where

    Only a hint can be seen from the turban

  9. مِثلَ ما عايَنتَ قَبلَ الشَفا

    واضِحَ العُصمَةِ أَحوى الخِدام

    As you saw before recovery

    The protector, most sagacious of servants

  10. بادَرَ السَيءَ وَلَم يَنتَظِر

    نُبهَ فيقاتِ العُروقِ النِيام

    Evil hastened and did not wait

    For slumbering fate’s veins to awaken

  11. في شَناظي أُقَنٍ بَينَها

    عُرَّةُ الطَيرِ كَصَومِ النَعام

    In ravines of bending necks

    Where birds throng, fasting like ostriches

  12. ثُمَّ وَلّى بَينَ عيطٍ بِها

    تَلحَسُ الأَروى زِمارَ البِهام

    Then he turned away into a valley

    Where the thickets echo with frogs

  13. مِثلَ ما أَنتِ مِن نَظرَةٍ

    أَوغَلَت مِن بَينِ سِجفَي قِرام

    As you glance from between my eyelids

    Penetrating from my dense lashes

  14. مِثلَ ما كافَحتَ مَخروفَةً

    نَصَّها ذاعِرُ رَوعٍ مُؤام

    As you battled a panic

    Started by a timid fox

  15. مُغزِلاً تَحنو لِمُستَوسِنٍ

    ماثِلٍ لَونَ القَضيمِ التَهام

    Cooing to one who has settled

    His color that of an old gown

  16. أَو كَأَسبادِ النَصِيَّةِ لَم

    تَجتَذِل في حاجِرٍ مُستَنام

    Or like an ostrich resting

    Having satisfied itself on a sandhill

  17. مُطرِقٍ تَعتادُهُ عَوهَجٌ

    بَينَ أَحجارٍ كَضِغثِ الثُمام

    Head down between stones

    Like scattering dry plants

  18. تَجتَني ثامِرَ جُدّادِهِ

    مِن فُرادى بَرَمٍ أَو تُؤام

    Gathering fruits of its plains

    From scattered seeds or pairs

  19. وَتَنَمّى كُلَّما آنَسَت

    نَبأَةً وَالمُؤنِسُ الرَوعَ نام

    Grown stronger whenever it sensed

    Tidings while the familiar one slept

  20. حَذَراً وَالسِربُ أَكنافَها

    مُستَظِلُّ في أُصولِ السَلام

    Cautiously, as its flock

    Took shade beneath the roots of peace

  21. تَتَّقي الشَمسَ بِمَدرِيَّةٍ

    كَالحَماليجِ بِأَيدي التِلام

    Avoiding the sun with skill

    Like the prudent with hands that plaster

  22. آذَنَ الناوي بِبَينونَةٍ

    ظَلتُ مِنها كَصَريعِ المُدام

    The caller to prayers proclaimed openly

    And I was stunned, like one clubbed

  23. إِذ أَشالَ الحَيُّ أَيلَيَّةً

    ذَأَبَتها نِسوَةٌ مِن جُذام

    When the tribe drove off deer

    Frightened by women’s ululations

  24. كُلَّ مَشكوكٍ عَصافيرُهُ

    قانِئِ اللَونِ حَديثِ الدَمام

    Every small bird among them

    Grey, recently taking wing

  25. يَمنَحُ الجَلسَ عُطاظِيَّةً

    رُكَّبَت في ظَلِفاتٍ جِسام

    Gives the company an air

    As if set on solid mounts

  26. فَرَشَت كُلَّ مُنيفِ القَرى

    فَوقَ مَتنَي كُلِّ خاظي الفِئام

    Having carpeted each clan’s valley

    On ponds, like those of Hijaz

  27. ذاتَ أَوضانٍ حِجازِيَّةٍ

    زانَ أَلحِيَها اِحمِرارُ العِظام

    Whose edges are reddened by bones

    The upper halves are covered

  28. قُنِّعَ الأَنصافُ مِنها العُلى

    فَهيَ غُرٌّ بِالخَنيفِ الشَآم

    So they seem Syrian waterskins

    While lower folds are tucked beneath

  29. وَأُديرَت حفُفٌ تَحتَها

    مِثلُ قُسطانِيِّ دَجنِ الغَمام

    Like a Yemeni’s gathered turban

    On the bumps are spindles

  30. وَعَلى الأَحداجِ أَغزِلَةٌ

    كُنِّسٌ سَدَّت خَصاصَ الخِيام

    Like tents that block out sunbeams

    With cheeks like pendulums that

  31. بِخُدودٍ كَالوَذائِلِ لَم

    يُختَزَن عَنها وَرِيُّ السَنام

    Do not conceal the swaying of a dewdrop

    Every lazy one dozing at noon

  32. كُلُّ مِكسالٍ رَقودِ الضُحى

    وَعثَةٍ ميسانِ لَيلِ التِمام

    And barn owl of a murky night

    A mare I imagined when it whinnied

  33. حُرَّةٍ شَبَّهتُ عِرنينَها

    حينَ تَرنو سافِراً عِرقَ سام

    Had the flowing mane of a steed

    And wilderness wherein jackals

  34. وَفَلاةٍ يَستَفِزُّ الحَشا

    مِن صُواها ضَبحُ بومٍ وَهام

    Were incited by its howls and yelps

    I took the wolf by surprise there

  35. نَفجَأُ الذِئبَ بِها قائِماً

    أَبرَقَ اللَونِ أَحمَّ اللِثام

    Quick, wrapped in a face veil

    As if a nervous pony startled

  36. كَغَرِيٍّ أَجسَدَت رَأَسَهُ

    فُرُعٌ بَينَ رِئاسٍ وَحام

    By chaos between composure and panic

    I have been cloaked in ignorance

  37. قَد تَبَطَّنتُ بِهِلواعَةٍ

    عُبرِ أَسفارٍ كَتومِ البُغام

    Beyond journeys, like encircling clouds

    Leaving behind the Pleiades, unknown

  38. مُخلِفِ الطُرّاقِ مَجهولَةٍ

    مُحدِثٍ بَعدَ طِراقِ اللُؤام

    After the knots of destiny were tied

    A forgetful one who, when happy

  39. عَنسَلٍ تُلوي إِذا أَبشَرَت

    بِخَوافي أَخدَرِيٍّ سُخام

    Foretells with the soothsayer’s truth

    Or with a sword stripped for people

  40. أَو بِشِملِ شالَ مِن خَصبَةٍ

    جُرِّدَت لِلناسِ بَعدَ الكِمام

    After veils, like drying broth

    What I had toyed with met

  41. أَلحَقَت ما اِستَلعَبَت بِالَّذي

    قَد أَنى إِذ حانَ حينُ الصِرام

    What comes when the hour is grave

    Like the reddish antelope in its hue

  42. كَعَقيلِ الحُرِّ في لَونِهِ

    لُمَعٌ كَالشامِ مِن غَيرِ شام

    Gleaming, like Damascus without Damascus

    Confusion, like the warbling

  43. خِلطُ وَشيٍ مِثلَ ما هَلهَلَت

    ذاتُ أَصدافٍ نَؤورَ الوِشام

    Of a rainswept porch at night

    It wiped the ground with its briskness

  44. يَمسَحُ الأَرضَ بِمُعنَوِنسٍ

    مِثلِ مِئلاةِ النِياحِ الفِئام

    Like the gait of a stomping autocrat

    I built it a shelter and it went on

  45. بَيَّتَتهُ وَهوَ مُستَرسِلٌ

    يَبتَني مَأوىً لِأَدنى مُقام

    Seeking the lowest station

    A night when the north wind raged

  46. لَيلَةٌ هاجَت جُمادِيَّةٌ

    ذاتُ صِرٍّ جِربِياءُ النِسام

    With piercing, chilly breezes

    Like a blossom whose wetness beneath

  47. وَرَدَةٌ إِذا لَجَّ صِنَّبرُها

    تَحتَ شَفّانِ شَباً ذي سِجام

    Youthful lips is preserved

    Dew lingered over it

  48. باتَ يَستَنُّ النَدى فَوقَهُ

    ضَيفَ أَرطاةٍ بِحِقفٍ هَيام

    A guest of plates in a desolate place

    Shaking off the dust from the curve

  49. يَستَبيثُ التُرابَ عَن مُنحَنى

    كُلِّ عُسلوجٍ كَمَتهِ الزَمام

    Of every prostate form’s leading rein

    Then it rose picking a seed

  50. ثُمَّ أَضحى يَقتَري حِبَّةً

    بَينَ أَكنافِ كَثيبٍ رُكام

    Between the shoulders of crumbled hills

    When dogs attacked

  51. بَينَما ذَلِكَ هاجَت بِهِ

    أَكلُبٌ مِثلُ حِظاءِ الغُلام

    Like a boy’s anklets

    So it fled stumbling

  52. فَتَوَلّى وَهوَ مُستَوهِلٌ

    تَرتَمي أَزلامُهُ بِالرَغام

    Its wrists dragging in the sand

    And a she-wolf struck out at it

  53. فَتَلافَتهُ فَلاثَت بِهِ

    لَعوَةٌ تَضبَحُ ضَبحَ النُهام

    Baying with the cry of a doe

    Jaws with edges

  54. شَمهَدٌ أَطرافُ أَنيابِها

    كَمَناشيلِ طُهاةِ اللِحام

    Like the baskets of dough-makers

    Greed personified when it grinned

  55. عَولَقُ الحِرصِ إِذا أَبشَرَت

    ساوَرَت فيهِ سُؤورَ المُسام

    Baring its canine teeth

    It seized him, and he screamed out

  56. ضَغَمَتهُ فَتَآيا لَها

    بِقَويمِ المَتنِ عارٍ حُسام

    With the sword’s straight blade

    And it fell to the ground, rejected

  57. فَهَوَت لِلوَجهِ مَخذولَةً

    لَم يَصِف عَنها قَضاءُ الحَمام

    With fate against the doves’ decree

    And it went on, its kin resembling

  58. وَمَضى تُشبِهُ أَقرابُهُ

    ثَوبَ سَحلٍ بَينَ أَعوادِ قام

    A ragged coat between tent pegs

    Was that a wounded gazelle

  59. ذاكَ أَم جَيداءُ بَيدانَةٌ

    غَربَةُ العَينِ جَهادُ المَسام

    Lonely, struggling, in pain?

    The beast ate its young, so it does not

  60. أَكَلَ السَبعُ طَلاها فَما

    تَسأَلُ الأَشباحَ غَيرَ اِنهِزام

    Ask shadows for anything but flight

    Fear gathered it to a lair

  61. ضَمَّها الخَوفُ إِلى شُنَّعٍ

    أَبدَتِ الأَضغانَ بَعدَ الكِتام

    After the darkness spread its cover

    Closing itself off from its pastures

  62. أَغلَقَت مِن دونِ أَغراسِها

    حَلَقاً أُرتِجنَ بَعدَ اِعتِقام

    A circlet broken after being clasped

    Now it is silent like foreign seeds

  63. فَهيَ مُلسٌ كَعَجيمِ النَوى

    تَرَّ مِن عُرضِ نَواحي الجِرام

    Fleeing the domains of villains

    Those first females left it

  64. أَخلَفَتهُنَّ اللَواتي الأولى

    بِالمَقاني بَعدَ حُسنِ اِعتِمام

    With traits after beauty’s perfection

    It descended to water carried

  65. فَاِجتَرَت لِلماءِ يَأدو بِها

    مِسحَلٌ مِقلاءُ عونٍ قَطام

    By a bare mount, steed without stripe

    With its saddlebags on its sides

  66. ذو مَزاريرَ بِأَعطافِهِ

    جُدَرٌ مِنها قَديمٌ وَدام

    An ancient, lasting wall

    It went down a ravine and lingered

  67. هَبَطَت شِعباً فَظَلَّت بِهِ

    رَكَّداً تَبحَثُ عَهدَ المَصام

    Searching out the time of resolution

    In ravines it dug, as

  68. في مَحانٍ حَفَرَتها كَما

    حَفَرَ القَومُ رَكِيَّ اِعتِقام

    The tribe dug the pit of doom

    Then it went like the lovesick

  69. ثُمَّ راحَت كَالمَغالي وَلَم

    تَشفِ سَوّارَ غَليلِ الأُوام

    And did not slake the thirst of passion

    The waste abused it, a lean

  70. يَعسِفُ البيدَ بِها سَمحَجٌ

    مُكرَبُ الرُسغِ مُبِرُّ الكِدام

    Wretched wretch, dresser of hides

    Swallowing white stew

  71. يَستَمي بَيضاءَ مَسجورَةً

    في قِرانٍ بَينَ صَوحَي حَوام

    In a pot between blazing stones

    It suffered summer with a shelter

  72. عانَتِ الصَيفَ بِمُستَوكِفٍ

    أَكَلَ الكيحَ إِذ الجَمُّ طام

    That devoured it when the heat was intense

    So sweat was its drink

  73. فَعَلا الكيحَ نِطافٌ لَها

    مِن نَقِيِّ كَبَريمِ الرِهام

    Of pure ostrich sweat

    Then its fate was to wander

  74. ثُمَّ آلَت وَهيَ مَعيونَةٌ

    مِن بَطيءِ الضَهلِ نَكزِ المَهام

    Slow, stumbling, led by destiny

    As it crept to the watering hole

  75. مِثلَ ما دَبَّت إِلى ماجِلٍ

    مُترَصِ الرَصفِ عُيونُ الكِظام

    Crowded with the gazelles of nightfall

    Or water with thickets shaken

  76. أَو كَماءٍ ذي ثُبىً أَتأَقَت

    غَرَباً أَيدي سُقاةِ الهِيام

    At night by carriers of burdens

    One thing leads it astray, the other cautious

  77. فَهيَ تَهديها وَأىً خَيفَقٌ

    ذاتُ شَغبٍ لَم يَثُر مِن وِحام

    Avoiding harm before night comes

    It found him, so it was deluded

  78. وَمُشيحٌ عَدوُهُ مُتأَقٌ

    يَرعَمُ الإيجابَ قَبلَ الظَلام

    Phantoms above it like soaring kites

    It met a long serpent

  79. قَد نَحاها فَهيَ مَسعورَةٌ

    فَوقَها مِثلُ شُواظِ الضِرام

    Vigilant, tireless

    Licking the ground, it has a stalk

  80. صادَفَت طِلواً طَويلَ الطَوى

    حافِظَ العَينِ قَليلَ السَآم

    Lean, crazed, wildly threshing

    Hiding on level ground

  81. يَلحَسُ الرَصفَ لَهُ قَصبَةٌ

    سَمحَجُ المَتنِ هَتوفُ الخِطام

    Like an antelope between the acacias

    If it catches prey, its people

  82. مُنطَوٍ في مُستوى رُجبَةٍ

    كَاِنطِواءِ الحُرِّ بَينَ السِلام

    Get the meat, eating leftovers

    Or if it finds a bird, it lines them up

  83. إِن يُصِب صَيداً يَكُن جُلُّهُ

    لِعجايا قوتُهُم بِاللِحام

    With the old, inedible skin, no food

    So it threw it, confident

  84. أَو يُصادِف خَفَقاً يُصفِهِم

    بِعَتيقِ الخَشلِ دونَ الطَعام

    It was a hunter, if given game, bound to throw

    And it knocked the arrow away from it

  85. فَرَماها واثِقاً أَنَّهُ

    صائِدٌ إِن أُطعِمَ الصَيدَ رام

    As it knocked away the water bearer

    And it fled trembling, making the pebbles

  86. فَأَزَلَّ السَهمَ عَنها كَما

    زَلَّ بِالساقي وَشيعُ المَقام

    Fly with the hawk’s swoop, the dove’s vigor

    It roused fury, as the bombard

  87. وَمَضَت رَهواً تُطيرُ الحَصى

    بِصَحيحِ النَسرِ صُلبِ الحَوام

    Does when slung by the catapult

  88. أَخلَقَت مِنهُ الخُزومُ كَما

    أَخلَقَ القَهقَرَ قَذفُ المُرام
