سئمت العيش حين رأي
ت صرف الدهر يرهقني
I wearied of life when I saw
the turns of Time burdening me
صعوداً والصعود إلي
ه يعجزني فيقلقني
with an arduous ascent—and climbing toward
it leaves me helpless and disquieted.
وبنتُ الموت بالآلا
م والأوجاع تطرقني
And Death’s daughter, with pains
and aches, comes knocking in the night:
تُؤرقني تحرِّقني
تُعرقني تُغرقني
she keeps me awake, she burns me;
she makes me sweat, she drowns me.
