1. يا رقعةً طُوِيَتْ على حَيَّاتِ

    وعقاربٍ كَرَّرْنَ ماءَ حياتي

    O parchment folded over snakes

    And scorpions who repeatedly poisoned my life

  2. ما أنتِ إلاّ من تباريحِ الجوى

    وسَفَاتجِ الأحزان والحَسَراتِ

    You are but ramblings of the delirious

    And outpourings of sorrows and regrets

  3. وكأنَّ أحرفَكِ الكريهةَ أعينٌ

    لرواقبٍ أو ألسُنٌ لوُشاةِ

    And as if your hated letters are eyes

    Of spies or tongues of slanderers

  4. وكذا الضياعُ رقاعُ قيمتِها إذا

    وافَتْ أتَتْ بحوادِثِ الآفاتِ

    And so is loss, scraps of parchment lose their worth

    When they bring tidings of misfortunes
