O fate, you have prolonged my wailing,
And left me a stranger in my own abode,
Robbing me of the dress of joy in one swoop—
Whether a servant's description or a scholar's ode.
Poetry flows from me and my tears are pearls,
From the making of my nature, loving and erudite.
The brilliant new moon has disappeared from my land,
From my upbringing’s horizon and from my education.
Now it rises in a land not my own, yet my heart
Cannot cease its weeping and its woeful plight.
A precious gift is with another, fragrantly displayed—
I see it is of my own making and composition.
A necklace of gems is with another, luminously arrayed—
I see it strung by my own hand in its configuration.
