1. سَقى الغيثُ رِيّاً منازل رَيّاً

    وعَلَّ ثراها بنوء الثُّريّا

    The rain watered the homes, pouring down

    Covering their ground with bountiful goodness

  2. مغاني غوانٍ ومرعَى ظباء

    نظمن لأجيادهن الحُليْا

    Songs of beautiful maidens and pasture for gazelles

    Composing poetry for their outstanding horses

  3. ومشيّن بين الحرير الموشّى

    يُذْلنَ الموشع والعَبقريا

    Strolling between embroidered silk

    Outshining the bright and the perfumed

  4. ورقرق بين الأثيث المثنَّي

    عبيراً عبيطاً ومسكاً ذكياً

    The scent wafts amongst the plush furnishings

    Sweet aromas, musk and perfume

  5. سلام على الجيرة الظاعنينا

    وقد أَزمع الحيُّ بيّناً وحَيّا

    Greetings to the neighboring tribe we visited

    When the living bid farewell and left

  6. وأرسلن أَلحاظهنَّ سهاماً

    جعلن محاجرهنَّ القسيّا

    Their eyes shot arrows

    Making their eyelids lethal weapons

  7. لئِن ودَّعونا فقد أودعونا

    غراماً مقيماً وشوقاً نجيا

    If they bid us adieu, they bid us farewell

    With lingering passion and newborn yearning

  8. أَخي أَتعجب من طول شوقي

    ولم تدر طعم الهوى يا أُخُيا

    My brother, are you surprised by my enduring ardor?

    You never tasted the flavor of love, my brother

  9. لئِن لمتني في تباريح وجدي

    فويل الشجي يوم يلقى الخليّا

    If my passion has tried me with its inner torments

    Woe to the ardent lover when he meets the beauty

  10. بنفسي من أهل تلك المغاني

    حبيباً إلى عزيزاً عليّا

    I swear by my soul amongst the people of those songs

    Was a beloved and precious sweetheart

  11. ألا ربما قبل يوم الثنائي

    صبحتُ النَّصيح وزرت الصّفيَّا

    Perhaps before yesterday

    I gave advice and visited the loyal friend

  12. وبتنا ضجيعيْ هوىً في ودادٍ

    نشوب الحديث العتابَ الشّهيّا

    We spent the night conversing, enraptured with affection

    Lighthearted chatter and coy repartee

  13. ونشفى ببَرد رُضاب الثنايا

    إذا لذعتنا كؤوسُ الحُميّا

    Healing with the cold touch of cheeks

    When the cups of fever stung bitterly

  14. ألا ربّ عيش عكفنا عليه

    بحكم الهوى بكرة وعشيّا

    By God, what great company we kept

    Morning and night, compelled by passion’s decree

  15. غذونا ورحنا نشاوى نعاطى

    نعياً ظليلا وعيشاً جنيّا

    We were entertained and traveled lighter than air

    Cheerful, shaded, living the good life

  16. ولهو المثَاني خلالَ الأغاني

    نُزجي بها القرقَفَ البابليّا

    Joyous songs the whole night through

    Accompanying the Babylonian tambourine

  17. لعمري لقد كان عيشناً رغَيداً

    وإن كان منّا ضَلالاً وغيَّا

    By my life, ours was a blissful existence

    Though we were misguided and reckless

  18. وأرحلت بالعيس حتّى لقينا

    محّمداً الاريحيّا

    I saddled my steed until we met

    Muhammad the pure and righteous

  19. أفاد وجاد وأجدى واسدى

    وهشّ وبشّ وحيّا وبيّا

    He brought grace and generosity

    Greetings, gifts and hospitality

  20. ولاقيت وفد النّدى في ذاره

    تحطّ الرحال وتلقى العصيّا

    I met the delegation at his abode

    Dismounting, staves hitting the ground

  21. محّمد السّابق النّاس طبعاً

    وقولاً وفعلاً وحسناً وريَّا

    Muhammad whose nature leads people

    In word, deed, beauty and rectitude

  22. ويهتز للسائلين ارتياحاً

    كَما هزهز الصّيقل المشرقّيا

    Swaying in delight to greet the questioners

    Like the shining sword polisher

  23. وذاكَ الكَريم السّجايا أبوهُ

    أبو عمر والجميلُ المحيّا

    And that noble man of stellar qualities

    Abu Umar and the beautiful and vivacious one

  24. وكنت الفَقير فلّما حَبَاني

    محّمدٌ البَّر صرتُ الغَنيّا

    Once poor, when Muhammad honored me

    I became wealthy

  25. كأني أرى بسطةً من يَديهِ

    إذا ما تأمّلتُ ما في يديّا

    As if I see gifts from his hands

    When I look upon what’s in my own

  26. ترى منه في بهجة الدَّست بدرراً

    يَسحُّ النّدى ويزين النَّديّا

    You’d see within the happiness of his palm, pearls

    Spreading moisture and adorning the gift

  27. ولا يألف الحمد إلاّ شجاعاً

    حكيماً حليماً جواداً سخيّا

    Only the valiant suits praise

    The wise, forbearing and generous

  28. كمثل محّمد النّدب يأبى

    فعالاً رضىً بادباً او خفيّا

    The example of Muhammad who refuses

    Moral failings, foolhardy or covert acts

  29. وطبعاً كريماً وعقلاً حكيماً

    وراياً مصيباً وعزماً قويّا

    Noble by nature, wise in mind

    Sound in judgment, strong in resolve

  30. وحلماً لبيباً وحكماً اديباً

    وقلباً سليماً وديناً زكيّا

    Forbearing, prudent and refined

    Upright in heart and pure in faith

  31. وأُعطي من الله كل خَطبٍ

    جَناناً جرباً وأَنفا حميّا

    Granted by God every sublime trait

    Courage, experience and protective zeal

  32. إذا خُطّة من صروف الدّواهي

    أرادته الفت عزيزاً أبيّا

    If the trials of fate’s caprice

    Try to debase the steadfast and dignified

  33. صَبوراً على نائبات الليّالي

    يعاف الرّذيل ويأبى الدُّنيّا

    Patient through the tribulations of nights

    Shunning disgrace and denyingtemptations

  34. نمته العتيك الملوك اعتزاءً

    إلى الأزد فاحتل فيها رقيّا

    His outstanding traits make kings jealous

    Hailing from Al Azd where he gained eminence

  35. أَولاك اليمانون أَهلُ المعالي

    رئيس الورى منهم والجريّا

    The people of Yemen are the people of glory

    Among them is the leader of all

  36. ومنهم نعدُّ الجوادَ المرجيَّ

    ومنهم محمد ذاك الكميّا

    Among them we count the trustworthy savior

    Among them is Muhammad the elite

  37. من الأَوس والخزرج الصّيد كانوا

    أَعزّ قبيلاً واَكرم حيّا

    Aus and Khazraj were the best game

    The most honorable and noble tribe

  38. هم أَكرم النّاس مُرداً وشيباً

    ومن كان في المهد منهم صبيّا

    They are the most honorable people in birth and old age

    And those who were children among them

  39. هُم أظهروا الدّين شرقاً وغرباً

    وهم نصروا بالسّيوف النبيّا

    They spread the faith east and west

    Won victory for the Prophet with swords

  40. وهم ركبوا الخيل جُرداً عتاقاً

    وهُزوا الظّبا والقنا السّمهويّا

    Mounting bareback steeds

    Shaking the gazelle and muscular horses

  41. بني عمر حزتموا في المعالي

    محّلاً شريفاً وبيتاً عليْاً

    O tribe of Umar you have reached in glory

    An eminent station and lofty abode

  42. وكم طامحٍ طامع في عُلاكمْ

    تزحزح عنكم مكاناً قصّيا

    How many ambitious rivals hope for your prominence

    But are kept far away in mean obscurity

  43. محمدٌ أَضحت معاليك تكْوي

    قلوب أعاديك بالغيظ كيّا

    Muhammad, your glory makes enemies’ hearts burn

    With overwhelming rancor and spite

  44. ولما رأيتُ حساناً سجايا

    أبي عمرَ اخترت فيها المضيّا

    When I saw the outstanding qualities

    Of my father Abu Umar, I persevered

  45. محمدُ شيّدْ علاكَ وعيّد

    سعيداً وعش في السرور مليا

    Muhammad built and solidified your eminence

    Happy times in times of bliss

  46. وطالت حياتك إثا وجدنا

    حياة المكارم ما دمتُ حيّا

    May your life be long if we find

    The life of nobility endure while you live

  47. ولا زلت في ظلَّ ملك عتيدٍ

    تسودُ العدى وتسرٌّ الوليّا

    While you remain in the shade of an eminent king

    Subduing foes and gladdening allies

  48. وتحشو صدورَ المحبين بَرْداً

    وقلب مُناويكَ داءً دَويَّا

    And filling loved ones’ breasts with joy

    While your enemies waste away in burning envy

  49. وها أنا أهديتُ بكراً عروساً

    إليك فعجّلْ بمهرٍ إليّا

    So pay the bridal price to me
